t is a shame that stories like these are published without all the facts. This kind of journalism makes me not want to read your product anymore.

If you are going to do a story that is on the edge of this racial dilemma that the USA is in right now, maybe facts from both sides should be presented.

Two students beating/jumping one other, and we are complaining about the two being pepper sprayed!?!? Did they stop when the cops yelled at them to quit fighting? Would you want the cops to stand off to the side with their hands in prayer position, asking them nicely to stop hitting each other?

That’s nice that they are honor roll students! The fact that they are in a "Center" says that they were not able to function in a regular setting. I'm sure there is a reason they go there. Just seems like there are to many unanswered questions out there still to be publishing this.

I happen to be friends with the owners of Belleair Coffee Company and you had some glaring errors in the article as well as giving it a B because "they don’t have the cozy feeling I crave.” Both Chris and Doug worked at Tech Data, *not* Raymond James.

Also, they buy their coffee beans from Buddy Brew, who is widely regarded as the best roaster in Tampa Bay. Not all coffee shops are designed to be “cozy.”

Clearwater’s innovative but blecky water plan to get a PR boost

A

fter seven years of planning, pondering, mulling and designing, the city of Clearwater is ready to lead the pack in an innovative project that will take wastewater, purify it to drinking water standards and then use it to replenish the state’s groundwater supply by injecting it back into the Floridan Aquifer, which supplies drinking water to nearly 10 million people.

Clearwater’s new $32 million facility will be the first in the state, and with that comes a lot of questions from a largely skeptical populace.

That’s why the city of Clearwater, along with the Southwest Florida Water

Management District (SWFWMD), is planning a $1 million outreach campaign to educate the public and remove the stigma from this valuable technology.

SWFWMD will pony up half of this cost, along with half of the overall costs to build the new treatment plant.

Every day, the city of Clearwater discharges nearly three million gallons of highly treated wastewater into Old Tampa Bay. It also supplies about 14 million gallons of drinking water and reclaimed water for irrigation every day.

wastewater that is being treated for irrigation use and instead use a hightech microfiltration process, also involving reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light disinfection, to remove all possible pollutants from the water.

At this point, the water will be pure enough to drink and also pure enough to be injected into the aquifer, and it will begin the process of flowing back into people’s homes via their taps. The process is known as “purified reclaimed water” or “purified recycled water.”

The so-called “toilet to tap” idea will be a main misconception that the city will aim to correct through the outreach campaign. City officials are planning to educate residents on the new technology through informative brochures, townhall meetings, videos and extensive tours of the facility once it is up and running.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been huge proponents of the technology, funding a machine called the Janicki Omniprocessor that can turn sewer sludge into fresh drinking water in minutes. Gates was famously photographed drinking a glass of water from the machine and is such a believer in the process, he has said he would happily drink the water every day. His goal is to eventually help the nearly 800 million people worldwide who are living without a clean water supply.

According to Public Utilities Director David Porter, Clearwater’s goal is to conserve and replenish water supplies when demand is at an all-time high.

City officials hope to have the new plant at the Northeast Water Reclamation Facility operational by 2020. The final design of the facility will still have to pass stringent safety measures before the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will grant a permit to proceed with its construction.

ccording to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spokeswoman, Susan Smith, the commission’s Division of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation, along with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), into the city of St. Petersburg’s recent sewage discharges.

In the wake of August’s Tropical Storm Colin and September’s Hurricane Hermine, St. Petersburg was forced to discharge almost 200 million gallons of raw and partially treated sewage into local waterways, including Tampa Bay and Boca Ciega Bay. St. Petersburg was not alone in this practice, but the 150 million gallons dumped after Hermine caused a storm of its own, prompting the investigations.

According to Smith, the DEP can’t pursue criminal charges; that’s where FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement’s investigation comes in.

CLEARWATER - A injured bald eagle that wreaked havoc along Clearwater’s Countryside Boulevard was assisted by members of the police and fire departments and Kris Porter, a wildlife rescue worker who specializes in raptors.

Off the Hook Beach Bistro:

T

his may sound absolutely horrible to say, but when I dine out, which, as some of you know, is A LOT, I couldn't care less about where the chef was trained. I know that sounds abrasive, but I've always said honesty is the best policy.

I'm there for the food and the atmosphere, people, not to hear about where and when some chef sharpened his culinary skills.

However, for this dining feature, it's a little different. How so, you ask? Because I previously knew the chef through another business associate, and when I heard he was going open a restaurant with a partner, I must admit, I was intrigued. I had heard he was a very good chef and had years of experience, but to me, he always seemed too easygoing to be a good chef.

So, on that note, I decided to drop in on Bill Artis' and Jimmy Abatte's new restaurant, Off the Hook Beach Bistro, formerly Ocean Breeze, in Madeira Beach.

Apparently, Jimmy and Chef Bill were able to purchase the restaurant for a song. What the hell does that even mean? Anyway, they got a good deal on the nearly turn-key restaurant.

So what did they change?

Everything, and nothing. They changed what they felt needed changing: the food.

The interior of the restaurant is very quaint and comfortable, with nice earth tone colors and seaworthy blues to match.

I didn't dig the booths against the wall much, so I chose to sit at a cozy table alongside the wall. In other words, the layout needs a little tweaking. Not much, but maybe a little.

The outside patio along Gulf Boulevard has a boatload of potential, with plenty of tables for customers to take in the beach sights. But hold on, I'm getting off track.

Back to what matters, the food. I was pretty curious about what changes they had made to the menu.

For the first time ever in my gazillion years of dining

the Off the Hook Beach Bistro reviews, food at Off the Hook 14601 Gulf Blvd. was too Madeira Beach good for the r e s ta u r a n t ' s 727-914-7041 atmosphere. The food was amazing.

Damn, Chef Bill, you really are the real deal.

The casual beach style of the restaurant is misleading for the gourmet but still more-than-affordable food they serve.

Truthfully, Chef Bill and Jimmy are too good for their own restaurant. I know that doesn't make sense.

For starters, I ordered the Bada Bing Shrimp, fried Gulf shrimp tossed in a creamy sweet Thai chili sauce, and the Breeze Crab Cake, 100 percent real crab accompanied with jalapeno mayo and remoulade dipping sauce. They were both freaking out of this

world. Oh my gosh, people.

For my entrée, I went with the blackened swordfish tacos topped with a citrus, cabbage and jalapeno slaw with a cilantro lime aioli and diced tomato. I also ordered the spicy chorizo burger, a half-pound Angus patty grilled and topped with a chorizo sausage patty and pepper-jack cheese, served with arugula and tomato and finished with a chipotle sauce. Holy Bajesus.

The food is incredible and the menu items are very reasonably priced. If I didn't know about Chef Bill's and Jimmy's past restaurant experiences, I would think they didn't know how to price their meals.

The quality of the food is all high-end at a low price. My guess is they have very slim margins to be able to put out such high quality food at such a low price. But if anyone knows what they're doing, it's these guys, as I found out first-hand.

And I must confess, I had my doubts that Jimmy and Bill could work side-by-side all day, with Jimmy's high energy, passionate vibe and Bill's low-key persona, but after my visit, I saw they are the perfect match.

Jimmy is just right for the front of the house, as he greeted and thanked every guest, and he did it with true sincerity, and Chef Bill ran the kitchen like a well-oiled machine.

I left Off the Hook Beach Bistro fulfilled, not just in my belly, but with happiness for two great guys who deserve to have their own piece of the American Dream in owning their own successful restaurant.

"Downtown Largo," the area of West Bay just west of Missouri Avenue, what was supposed to be the new go-to place for Largo a few years back, has been a complete failure in driving people to the shopping-slash-event destination. The parking is hidden in the back, which misleads would-be customers into driving right by, looking for somewhere else to go.

Sweet Island Vibes steps into the 351 West Bay location with a concept that may be a tougher challenge even than its location. Let's not forget, this is Largo we are talking about. Not Key Largo. Huge difference.

As I entered the new restaurant from the rear parking lot, the first thing I noticed was an ashtray with what looked like a cigarette and tiparillo-type cigar in it.

nice addition. I actually really liked it. For the price at $10, I thought it was a good deal.

As for the Curry Chicken Roti, there was something about it that just wasn't impressive. It was a bit dry and needed, in my opinion, more sauce or the ingredients used in the burrito-type meal. I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't near as good as the jerk pork.

Other items on the menu were Snapper Escovitched (whole fried snapper lightly sautéed in a light vinegar-based sauce, drizzled with carrots, onions and sweet peppers); Kingfish (a kingfish steak grilled or sautéed in a Caribbean tomato-based stew sauce with onions and peppers); Curry Goat or Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken; and Pernil (Spanish pulled pork), as well as salads, a kids' menu and a few vegetarian options.

With those changes, Sweet Island Vibes may have a shot. Unfortunately if they continue down the theme-restaurant idea, they, too, will become another casualty of that West Bay location.

Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra return to the Capitol Theatre

nternationally known, Grammy nominated instrumental artist, Ottmar Liebert, returns to the Capitol Theatre for his sixth appearance on Saturday, Nov. 12. Appearing with Liebert will be his band, Luna Negra.

Born in Germany, Liebert began playing classical guitar at age 11 and flamenco guitar at 14. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia before moving to Boston and eventually settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In 1989, Liebert founded the first incarnation of his new band Luna Negra. His album Nouveau Flamenco began life as a self-produced local release called Marita: Shadows and Storms, copies of which local Santa Fe artist, Frank Howell, distributed in his art galleries.

When the record found its way to radio stations and began generating a buzz

among programmers and an unprecedented response among listeners, Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a fully remastered version.

“I was honestly happy playing this music in hotels and restaurants in Santa Fe, and going in one year from doing that to opening for Miles Davis was a pretty intense jump,” said Liebert.

“Most shocking for me was to realize how many different people from so many diverse cultures embraced it. I still get letters from fans in Europe, South-America, Australia, and Asia...it’s

been a really gratifying experience. I’ve had the opportunity to play in a wide variety of cultural settings with musicians from around the world, and that has been a great experience, too.”
