ST. PETE BEACH - Heavy rain and rough weather last month are impacting sea turtle nests along the beaches, jeopardizing the eggs inside and endangering the hatchlings emerging from them.

If you see a sea turtle nest that’s been washed out, or find eggs on top of the sand, it is unlikely those eggs are viable. Within a short time after being laid, the eggs are vulnerable to any movement, which can disrupt development of the embryo within.

“While it is disappointing to see stranded sea turtle eggs on the beach, please leave them in place,” said Robbin Trindell, who heads the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) sea turtle management program. “You can help protect the sea turtle nests that remain by respecting the posted areas. Remove all objects from the beach at night and fill in any holes or depressions on the beach at the end of the day. It’s also critical to keep the beach dark at night by turning off exterior lights on beachfront buildings and closing curtains or blinds.”

In some cases, small sea turtles may be seen stranded on the beach. These hatchlings may have washed out of nests or been swept back onto the beach with the seaweed after beginning their swim offshore.

Seaweed or “beach wrack” should be left in place, since its removal could hurt small sea

turtles that may be present.

If you see live hatchlings on the beach, call FWC’s Wildlife Alert at 1-888-404FWCC. Possession of sea turtle eggs or hatchlings requires a special permit from the FWC. You should not take hatchlings off the beach and into your car or home unless directed to do so by the FWC or an FWCauthorized Marine Turtle Permit holder.

“Hatchlings can be placed on a wet towel or cloth in the dark in a bucket until help arrives, but do not place the hatchlings in water,” Trindell said.

PASS-A-GRILLE - After an amendment to an ordinance was passed by St. Pete Beach commissioners to forbid dogs from all beach areas in the city, officials agreed to discuss the possibility of a dog beach at the end of Pass-a-Grille Way, south of the Merry Pier.

Prior to the proposed meeting, Commissioner Rick Falkenstein issued a challenge to local dog owners to take the lead in ideas for the design and implementation of the dog park.

By Beth Ludwig INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - Following a request by Indian Rocks Beach city officials, Pinellas County commissioners recently approved a motion to declare three contiguous parcels of vacant land in Indian Rocks Beach as surplus and offer the land for sale to the “highest and best bidder,” pending a new land valuation appraisal.

The property, located on Gulf Boulevard between 23rd and 24th avenues, was originally purchased by the county in 2006 for $2.8 million. The purchase included the land, totaling approximately 0.82 acres, and the businesses that occupied it at the time.

The county’s plan was to develop the land as public beach parking, and the businesses were demolished, but the city of Indian Rocks Beach opposed the formation of more public parking. As a result, the county has left the land a vacant, grassy field for eight years.

Department feels “high density temporary residences” would be the best use for the property. Current zoning would provide for 12 units on the parcel.

County officials expect the new land valuation to exceed $1,000,000. The valuation amount will set the minimum bid in the sales process. All proceeds from the sale will be returned to the Pinellas County Capital Improvement Program Fund, which provided the initial funding to purchase the property in 2006.

Year-long construction project on Tom Stuart Causeway Bridge underway MADEIRA BEACH – A nearly $3 million Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) repair and maintenance project for the Tom Stuart Causeway Bridge got underway last month in Madeira Beach.

The repair work will sometimes necessitate the closure of lanes, but the bridge will remail open at all times. According to FDOT, any lane closures will occur after 8:00 p.m. and before 7:30 a.m.

The maintenance work being done on the bridge includes the repair of various support beams, as well as rehabilitation to the bridge decks, foundation and pedestrian railings and sidewalks and the bridge tender house.

The project is expected to continue for at least a year.

Indian Rocks Beach resident Summer Hannah, 19, and her family discovered a rare find in Venice Beach last month: a megalodon tooth. Shark teeth like this are usually found by digging deep below the surface of the beach. However, recent heavy rains washed away the top layer of the sand and made the tooth visible.

The world’s fastest show on the water is back with an action packed weekend of family-friendly events.

CLEARWATER BEACH – The 7th annual Bright House Clearwater Super Boat National Championship and Seafood Festival kicks off Friday, Sept. 25, at noon at the Baystar Race Village in downtown Clearwater, where the super boats will be on display. Guests can meet the racers, get up close with some of the world's fastest

The premier offshore sporting event, where super boats take to the water traveling extreme speeds of up to 180 miles per hour on a 2.5 mile water course, begins Sunday, Sept. 27 in Clearwater Beach.

By Jason Coffman Boaters protesting manatee zones INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently approved a change in its manatee protection zones, which will lower the boating speed limits for most of Indian Rocks Beach, with the exception of the Intracoastal Waterway, and local boaters are not happy about it.

According to FWC, Pinellas County has ranked high in boat-related manatee deaths in recent years, which prompted the initiative to rezone local waters.

Area boaters are irked by the new rules and are exploring options to try to reverse the FWC’s decision, including filing an injuction with the state.

OCEAN BREEZE Tantalizing Seaside Food

T

here are some restaurants you walk into after they have opened, and although you wish them well, you say to yourself, I give them six months. Hey, I'm no Jon Taffer, but come on, people, you know what I'm talking about.

That is exactly what I thought when I walked into this Mexican dive in Madeira Beach probably a year ago, give or take. It was obvious the place was not going to make it. The kitchen and the dining room design were just not conducive to success.

Fast forward to today, and owners Cathy and Robert Bears of the new Ocean Breeze Grill have totally remodeled the restaurant into a comfortable and casual beach joint, and have also brought some pizzazz and flair into the kitchen. Combined with his own culinary craft and skill - what do you mean, craft and skill are the same thing? Whatever, moving on‌.

The point is, they have also hired a former Bonefish culinary craftsman to add his touch to the restaurant.

The interior of the restaurant is now comfortable and inviting, and there's no shortage of tables equipped with tiki umbrellas on the outdoor patio.

The Bears learned quickly, or perhaps they already knew the secret to success here on the beach. Serve

damn good food at a reasonable price.

And you want to throw in a great happy hour special and there you go. Ocean Breeze serves free Bloody Marys with breakfast. No, I did not stutter. FREE, baby! Count me in.

And in addition to their breakfast specials, Ocean Breeze offers daily specials, such as a hamburger with fresh-cut fries on Mondays for only Ocean Breeze Grill $5; on Tuesdays, beef tacos are 14601 Gulf Blvd. $2 each; on Madeira Beach Wednesdays, there's wings for 727-954-6976 only $.50 each; and tenders, I ordered their signadelicious Italian sausage with peppers and onions for $5 on ture Fresh Seafood Platter, which consisted of fried clam strips, fried fish and Thursdays.

In addition to happy hour drink prices fried shrimp with fresh-cut Ocean Monday through Friday from 2:00 to Breeze fries. No B.S., people, it was 6:00 p.m., they also offer $2 Domestics awesome. The fish was massive and and $3 Imports all day on Saturday and Sunday.

How are you going to beat that? You CAN'T! I took advantage of some quality time with my daughter and took her to lunch at Ocean Breeze on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. While I knew my daughter would go with her traditional chicken

they're chicken tenders. Hey, what can I say, she is an expert in chicken tenders.

In addition, Ocean Breeze offers fresh grilled burgers, meatball parmesan and Philly cheese steak subs, soups and salads, an array of appetizers, from coconut shrimp and mozzarella cheese sticks, an assortment of dinner entrees and much more.

They also have a huge breakfast menu if I didn't already mention it.

Overall, the owners kicked ass on this place. They took a dead space and revived it, turning it into an awesome, casual beach restaurant offering locals and out-of-town guests a very cool place to hang out end enjoy a cold cerveza and some good vittles.

OK, food. It's a Southern thing!

hen I came out of high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do for a job.

My brother-in-law was a police officer and I was intrigued by that, so I decided, what the hell, that's what I would do. At the age of 18, I obtained a sponsor from a local department, which was required back in those days, and signed up for the police academy.

After graduating from the academy, I was offered a job with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office in Gainesville.

Yes, North Florida, my friends. No shortage of good ol' boys with the department. Almost all of my sergeants and lieutenants were ex-marines. The sheriff's office looked for ex-marines because they are disciplined and do what I eventually learned to do, which is keep your mouth shut and do as you're told.

Fast forward to this past Friday when I walked into Fitness Together in Belleair Bluffs and met JD Christie, a young, 6'3" buck who is in amazing shape, with a composed demeanor.

When I learned he was in the marines, it didn't surprise me one bit. That's what

the marines do. They break you down and rebuild you into a man or woman who can protect our country. They have a system. They have a plan. And you better believe their plan works.
