TREASURE ISLAND - In the upcoming November election, Treasure Island residents will be given the opportunity to vote on a proposal that would increase the allowable height and density of certain Gulf Boulevard redevelopment projects in the future.

If approved, the proposed changes to the city’s land use regulations and comprehensive plan would establish a planned development zoning district along both sides of Gulf Boulevard north of 127th Avenue and on the west side of Gulf Boulevard between 104th and 119th Avenues.

Under the proposal, density could increase to up to 75 units per acre in resort facilities high zoning, up from the current number of 50. In commercial general zones, the number would increase from the current 22 up to 60 per acre. Buildings’ height could reach seven stories instead of five.

City officials contend that the changes would encourage redevelopment in a city that is in need of it, but some residents are wary of adding to the traffic congestion, especially during the busy tourist season.

Pitbull’s latest video, for the song Sexy Beaches, is basically a fourminute advertisment for Florida beaches and features the Don CeSar, as well as other hotels in the Sunshine State. The video has already been viewed over two million times on YouTube.

Redingtons don’t see need for water taxi REDINGTON SHORES The Redington Shores Town Commission, echoing Redington Beach, has declined to endorse a proposal by the Barrier Islands Government Council that would establish a water taxi service along the Intracoastal Waterway.

At least eight of the 11 barrier island communities need to approve the proposal before it can move forward.

northbeachnews Clearwater Police cautions against lightning strikes

CLEARWATER BEACH - Following the horrific lightning strike that sent two visiting teenagers to the hospital, the Clearwater Police Department urged everyone to take shelter during storms.

One of the teens, Cameron Poimboeuf, 15, of Charlotte, N.C., was originally taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition, but was upgraded to fair condition within two days of his injury.

The other teen, 18year-old Jansen Tabor, was in good condition and soon released from the hospital.

The lightning strike occurred in Sand Key around 4:30 p.m. as the teens were running for shelter on the beach when a severe storm quickly rolled in.

A statement by the Clearwater Police Department read, “The incident reminds us how dangerous lightning is and the importance of heading indoors when storms threaten -- not just overhead, but anywhere nearby.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the area from Tampa Bay, through Orlando, and across the state to Titusville is known as "Lightning Alley."

Annually, this area receives the most lightning in the United States. More than 90 percent of the lightning in this swath of land occurs from May through October, between the hours of noon and midnight.

BELLEAIR BEACH - Despite grumblings by a few concerned citizens, an extensive remodeling of Belleair Beach’s Bayside Park has been approved by the city council, to the tune of $1 million.

According to landscape designer Drew Copley, of Copley Design Associates, the pricetag will include upgrades to the park’s existing playground area and basketball court, as well as the installation of an area for

By Jason Coffman bocce ball, a fitness trail and a small amphitheatre. The goal of the makeover is to transition the park into a “quaint” space that residents will want to utilize.

The project is expected to take four or five years to complete. The city is currently mulling ways to fund the improvements, including possible grants and donations.

Belleair Beach still pondering undergrounding options BELLEAIR BEACH - After months of discussion, a group of residents plans to present the Belleair Beach City Council with their ideas on how to successfully proceed with the undergrounding of utilities in the city’s neighborhoods. This project has been a priority for many of the city’s residents for some time.

In addition, the city will also be surveying residents in various ways to get as many opinions on the city’s undergrounding project as possible.

IRB’s Thai Pan Alley: A twist of perfection

s we all know, or at least all of us locals know, there is a Thai restaurant in almost each community on our lovely beaches.

St. Pete Beach has a couple, neither of which is any good, and yes, I have been to both: Nori Thai and Basil Leaf Thai, Basil Leaf being the worst of the two. Expensive, and who plays loud alternative music in a Thai restaurant? Hey, that was a question. The answer: no one should.

Madeira Beach has Thai Am 2, which is actually quite good. Thai Prajaam in Redington Shores is also good, but they don't seem to hold consistent hours. Listen up, restaurant owners, and listen good. If you want to succeed in the restaurant business, hold consistent hours. Go to the bait shop in Indian Rocks Beach and ask the owner, Tim, what his hours are. The guy is always open. It's amazing. He holds long-ass hours, but that's why he is successful. No, it's not a restaurant but it's what a restaurant must,

and I mean must, do. OK, I'm getting way off track here, but you get my point.

Moving on down the street to Indian Rocks Beach, or IRB if you will, where Thai Pan Alley has been a staple in the community for years and years but it, too, has had its good times and bad.

The original owner built an amazing Thai restaurant, but then it was sold a couple of times. Each of those

owners seemed to struggle with keeping the consistency of what the original owner had built. OK, let me just cut to the chase. The place took a dive and the service sucked and sometimes, so did the food.

Now today, cue Joey Buck, the new owner of Thai Pan, who has resurrected the Thai Pan of old with the same service and quality of the original owner.

He has kept both manager, Linda, and server, Heather, on board, and truthfully, they're the only two worth keeping. The fact is, Heather is one hell of a server and Linda is a very good manager, but you can only work with what you have to work with, and with the past owners, both Linda and Heather had to deal with inconsistent hours, and worse, inconsistent cooks.

I now know that whenever I go to Thai Pan, I will receive great service, great food that is prepared within a reasonable length of time, and also a great atmosphere.

But I do have one gripe.

I noticed they had live music in the back dining room one night when I dined there. Advice to Buck: dump it. No one, at

least no one I know, goes to a Thai restaurant to listen to live music.

As far as the food, everything on the menu is a huge hit. I love the chicken red curry, but whatever you do, do not order higher than a three star unless you love your food spicier than acid. I have always ordered the 3 star (out of 5) but on my last visit, my son talked me into ordering 4 stars and it lit my mouth on fire. And I freaking love spicy food. Other great items are the mixed fried rice with shrimp, chicken and beef. Absolutely delicious.

The bottom line is, Joey Buck has brought Thai Pan Alley back to the Thai restaurant all of us locals used to love. And of course he couldn't have done it without the dedication of his entire staff, so kudos to all of you, too.

When you go, make sure you ask for Heather and sit in the rear of the restaurant on the open air patio. Oh, and did I mention it's only steps away from the beach? You gotta love our beaches!
