By Scott Lancaster TREASURE ISLAND - As part of Treasure Island’s Capital Improvement Plan, the city has awarded a contract to Kamminga & Roodvoets, Inc. for the construction of drainage improvements in the Sunset Beach neighborhood.

Construction began in May and is scheduled to continue through December. It will initially affect residents along Bayshore Drive, from 79th Avenue to 79th Terrace, and 79th Terrace from West Gulf Boulevard to Bayshore Drive through August.

From approximately September through December, construction will take place along Bayshore Drive from 84th Avenue to 83rd Avenue, and 83rd Avenue from West Gulf Boulevard to Bayshore Drive.

Residents should expect minor traffic delays and detours near the construction area due to heavy equipment and truck traffic. In addition, there will occasional parking interferences, short-term water outages, and noise associated with the construction.

In Brief Cost of a beach wedding in St. Pete Beach going up ST. PETE BEACH - St. Pete Beach city commissioners recently voted to approve an ordinance that increases the cost of a permit for a beach wedding with more than 20 guests to $250.

The previous cost was $20. For weddings with fewer than 20 guests, the cost will now be $75.

Area wedding planners oppose the increase, saying it will prompt people to get married, and spend their tourism dollars, in other beach communities where the fee isn’t so steep.

The purpose of the festival is to introduce the sport of surfing to children with special needs with the help of skilled instructors. Participants can also enjoy stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, live music, face-painting, games, fire engine tours and more.

northbeachnews Clearwater Beach proposes one-way streets to help traffic

CLEARWATER BEACH - In the latest bid to find a solution to Clearwater Beach’s ever growing traffic problems, city officials recently unveiled a proposal to convert two main roadways into one-way streets.

The plan would turn Coronado Drive into a one-way street going south and Hamden Drive into a one-way street going north.

According to Paul Bertels, Clearwater’s traffic operations manager, the conversion would make travelling south of the roundabout much more smooth.

Bertels said the change would require new signage and road paint, at a cost of about $10,000, but there would be no construction required.

The proposal still needs to be pitched to the city commission for consideration, but if approved, Bertels anticipates

it could be implemented within a few months.

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - According to estimates released by Pinellas County Property Appraiser Pam Dubov, the taxable value of real estate in Pinellas County is on the rise.

South Pasadena led the pack, with an increase in taxable values at 10.5 percent over last year’s numbers, but Indian Rocks Beach was right behind,

Overall, the average taxable value of real estate throughout the county was up by 7.7 percent. These numbers are used by city and county officials as a starting point in developing their budgets for the upcoming year.

Crabby Bill’s demolition underway CLEARWATER BEACH - For many, it’s the end of an era. Demolition of the Clearwater Beach Crabby Bill’s, located at 37 Causeway Blvd., began last month in order to make way for a new Crabby Bill’s restaurant, which is slated to open in March next year.

Plans for the new restaurant include a three-story building complete with a rooftop deck for dining and panoramic views of Clearwater Beach.

Now, I will be the first to tell you that I am no world traveler. Truthfully, I don't want to be, but I lived in California for over 10 years, yes, been to Mexico, Jamaica, etc., and NO, I have not found more beautiful beaches than what are right here in our own backyard.

Having said that, what I am asking each of you to do, OK, I won't ask, I'll demand it, and that is to take an afternoon and go with a friend, your wife, your husband, your boyfriend, girlfriend, or even a work colleague, and head to the Sands Beach Bar & Grill, located in the DreamView Beachfront Hotel and Resort in Clearwater Beach, formerly the Wyndham Garden. I stumbled onto this truly amazing hidden gem about a year ago. How, you ask?

Because there is nothing I love more than going to a casual restaurant on the beach with an

amazing view like at the Sands Beach Bar. But if the food sucks, I'll give them one or two tries and then I'm out. But I confess, I'm a frequent diner at Sands Beach Bar because they have damn good food.

Even if I don't want to have dinner there, I will at least go to the Tiki Bar on the beach and have a couple of cervezas as I

take in a breathtaking view of the sunset.

Really, who uses the word breathtaking anymore?

How about awesome? In any event, the views from the outside deck of the restaurant and the Tiki Bar are todie-for.

Of course, this dining feature is going to buzz-kill everything and let the secret about Sands Beach Bar, but, hey, I'm not a selfish man and I feel I should share the wealth, or knowledge anyways, about Sands.

As for the food, it is fantastic and to my utter amazement, no, I don't use utter that often, the pricing is surprisingly low. For example, three very healthy fresh grouper tacos are only $13.

On my latest visit, since I have previously had the grouper tacos, I went with the Mediterranean Chicken sandwich: grilled chicken with a creamy red pesto sauce, feta cheese, fresh tomatoes and kalamata olives on toasted ciabatta bread. OMG, people, it was out of this world.

In addition to seafood

items, Sands Beach Bar also offers pulled pork sliders, Reubens, Black Angus burgers, wraps, gourmet pizza and much more.

Truthfully, if you can't find an item on this menu that you will love, you have serious issues. The place is absolutely amazing, with an absolutely amazing view of the Gulf of Mexico, delicious and well-priced cuisine and warm and friendly service to boot.

Malia was awesome.

And a note to all of you: hotel owners love locals to dine at their restaurants and drink at their bars. And your wife or husband owns me a large draft for the heads up.
