Flu season is in full swing and Pinellas County is one of the leaders in the state in outbreaks.

Here’s what you need to know about this year’s deadly viruses.

T

he nation is having a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad flu season. Flu is widespread in all states except Hawaii, according to reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and nationally, as of last month, at least 106 people have died from the infectious disease. According to the CDC, thousands of people die from flu-related symptoms every year.

In addition, states across the country are reporting higher-than-average flurelated hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Hospitalization rates are highest among people older than 50 and children younger than 5.

Health experts aren’t sure why this season is different.

“We’re seeing the worst of it right

now,” said pediatrician Dr. Randy Bergen. “We’re really in historic territory, and I just don’t know when it’s going to stop.”

Here are five things you should know about this flu season: 1. It’s shaping up to be one of the worst in recent years.

The H3N2 influenza A subtype that appears to be most prevalent this year is particularly nasty, with more severe symptoms, including fever and body aches.

Australia, which U.S. public health officials follow closely in their flu forecasting—in part because their winter is our summer—reported a record-high number of confirmed flu cases in 2017.

Another influenza B virus subtype is

also circulating, "and that’s no fun, either," said Bergen.

2. This season’s flu vaccine is likely to be less effective than in previous years.

U.S. flu experts say they won’t fully

know how effective this season’s vaccine is until it’s over. But Australia’s experience suggests effectiveness was only at about 10 percent. In the U.S., it is 40 to 60 percent effective in an average season. Vaccines are less protective if strains are different than predict-

3. You should get the flu shot anyway.

Even if it is not a good match to the virus now circulating, the vaccine helps to ease the severity and duration of symptoms if you come down with the flu.

Children are considered highly vulnerable to the disease. Studies show that for children, a shot can significantly reduce the risk of dying, but sadly, there have already been 37 pediatric deaths from the flu reported so far this season.

High-dose vaccines are recommended for older people, who are also exceptionally vulnerable to illness, hospitalization and death related to the flu, according to the CDC. "Some protection is better than no protection but it’s certainly disappointing to have a vaccine that’s just not as effective as we’d like it to be,” said Bergen.

4. Basic precautions may spare you and your family from days in bed.

As much as possible, avoid people who are sick. Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.

Masks aren’t particularly effective in

keeping you from catching the flu, although they may help keep sick people who wear them from spreading their germs further.

If you are sick, cover your cough and stay home from work if you can, Bergen said. Remaining hydrated, eating nutritious foods and exercising can also help strengthen your immune system.

Because elderly people are so vulnerable to the flu, some nursing homes and assisted living facilities may limit visitors and resident activities, depending on the level of illness.

5. Don’t mistake flu symptoms for those of a common cold.

The hallmarks of the flu are fever and body aches that accompany cough and congestion.

If you feel as if you’re having trouble breathing, or if your fever can’t be controlled with medication like Tylenol, check with your doctor. It’s even more important for patients to see a doctor if they have a chronic medical condition like diabetes or heart disease, or if they are young or elderly.

Doctors are being advised to prescribe antiviral drugs like Tamiflu even without a lab test for influenza, Bergen

said. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, however, Tamiflu supplies are running low.

And Bergen cautioned that these medications are only partly effective,

reducing the time of illness by just a day or two.

Flu season typically starts in October and ends in May, peaking between December and February.

Madeira Beach bracing for an interesting election

ith two of the five seats on the Madeira Beach Board of Commissioners up for grabs, it’s going to rest with the voters to decide how they want the city government to function moving forward.

District 1 and District 2 seats will be on the ballot March 13, with both incumbents ready to vie for their positions.

Terry Lister, District 1 incumbent, and District 2 incumbent Nancy Hodges have frequently been at odds with and been out-voted by the other three seats on the board, held by Mayor Maggi Black, Vice Mayor John Douthirt and Commissioner Nancy Oakley, who have created a tight alliance against Lister and Hodges.

Many of the squirmishes have pertained to the development and growth of Madeira Beach, with Lister and Hodges for it, and the other three, not so much.

In Brief Fire breaks out in kitchen of Brown Boxer CLEARWATER BEACH - Firefighters with Clearwater Fire Rescue recently responded to a fire at the Brown Boxer restaurant located at 483 Mandalay Ave. in north Clearwater Beach.

According to investigators, smoke was coming from the roof when first responders arrived, but the fire appears to have been centered around the restaurant’s kitchen.

There were no injuries reported.

news Clearwater Beach to open new trolley transit center ASAP

I

t’s all-hands-on-deck as the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) plans to complete a new Clearwater Beach Transit Center on State Road 60 near the roundabout in Clearwater Beach before spring break next month.

The transit center will allow trolley riders to park their cars on the mainland and be deposited right into the heart of Clearwater Beach’s action. The Clearwater Beach Transit Center will consist of a bus bay, covered pedestrian waiting areas and pick-up/drop-off areas for riders making transportation connections.

“The City of Clearwater recognizes the economic growth that stems from having strong public transportation in any community,” said Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos. “This new transit center is an investment in Clearwater and an investment in the hundreds of thousands of visitors who are attracted every year to Clearwater Beach.”

The city of Clearwater partnered with PSTA to contribute $250,000 towards the capital construction cost of the center and to provide ongoing maintenance. The remaining cost of the project will be funded by PSTA’s capital reserves.

“Any transportation project takes collaboration, innovation, and strong partnerships,” said PSTA Board Chair Darden Rice. “PSTA’s mission is to expand our partnerships within the community, respond to their needs, and work together to facilitate innovative transportation solutions for everyone.”

The Clearwater Beach Transit Center will also introduce the county’s first queue-jump, signal prioritization which will allow buses to pull ahead of traffic to shorten travel times.

“This new transit center brings important benefits to both visitors and beach employees,” said PSTA CEO Brad Miller. “Rather than make multiple bus and trolley transfers, everyone now can get a car-free ride directly to where they want to go, the beach, without having to find or pay for a parking spot. Longer term, this transit center is a key foundation block to a future with an express service to the Tampa International Airport maybe in an express lane over

the causeway bridge."

The transit center will immediately serve four routes, including all three of the Jolley Trolley routes and the Suncoast Beach Trolley route.

Currently, more than 800,000 trips are taken on PSTA’s trolley routes a year.

PSTA will be offering free rides to and from Clearwater Beach during spring break. Riders can park in two different mainland lots just over the bridge to take advantage of this offer: the Harborview-Coachman lot and the lot at Clearwater City Hall.

Indian Shores getting flood relief

It might take up to a year to complete, but relief is coming to Indian Shores residents who have to deal with Gulf Boulevard flooding on a regular basis.

The Florida Department of Transportation has proposed a project that will run through two miles of Indian Shores and one mile of Indian Rocks

Beach, with the goal of reducing the street flooding that occurs with even the most routine summer rains.

The $3.2 million project will install thousands of feet of drains and new pipes along the shoulder of Gulf Boulevard to aid drainage. It is expected to get underway this summer.

TREASURE ISLAND - The Gulf Beaches Rotary Club and the City of Treasure Island are again joining forces to hold the 19th annual Rotary Tennis and Golf Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis Center, 10315 Paradise Blvd.

The Tennis Challenge will be a Men’s and Women’s Doubles Round Robin for players of all playing levels and abilities, starting at 9:00 a.m. The Golf Scramble will be for both men and women, with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the Treasure Island Recreation Department children’s programs, Treasure Bay tennis and golf programs for juniors and the Gulf Beaches Rotary Foundation.

The cost is $25 per player, which includes play, a goodie bag, prizes and a raffle. The event will also be accompanied by a silent auction that includes tennis racquets, hotel and restaurant packages and much more.

The tournament and auction are open to the public and you need not be a player to bid on the silent auction items. Food and beverage concessions will be available throughout the event.

14th annual Gulfport’s Get Rescued GULFPORT - Mark your calendars now: Gulfport’s Get Rescued is leashed up and ready for its 14th annual event on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The point was that wealth can be created with rental housing by paying down the loan using someone else's money, earning rental income and appreciation.

The reverse is also true. During the period from 2007-2010, there were more properties for sale than buyers to acquire them. Each price level declined chasing a buyer.

During the 2007-2010 period, we saw small investors buy the bargain homes and convert them to rentals.

Then Wall Street jumped in, forming hedge funds that bought in bulk. Wall Street only bought three bedroom/two bath homes in good school districts.

The small investors who found the holes in the market continued to invest.

With the current shortage of opportunities, the small investors are buying anything that will pay for itself, pushing up the property values in all of Florida.

If you have been reading the Roe Report for the past four years, you have read about the value pyramid. At the top, we have the most valuable properties with the lowest number of buyers. At the base, we the highest number of properties with the largest pool of buyers/investors. As the lower level appreciates in value, it pushes prices up in the level just above it.

Groupers IRB: New Indian Rocks Beach restaurant has everyone talking

s one Yelp reviewer put it, "Run, don't walk, to Groupers. Inexpensive, yummy food with cheap beers. $1.75 drafts and $3 wines everyday. The peel and eat shrimp are awesome."

This Yelp reviewer could not be more on point. I hate that phrase but, oh God, she is so right.

Indian Rocks Beach’s Groupers, which opened less than in a year ago, has everyone talking. It could very well be one of the most desirable restaurants, not just in Pinellas County, but in the entire Tampa Bay area. Pretty damn good for a little Florida cracker joint that serves awesome seafood and amazing BBQ. As the Yelper said, Groupers has quickly made a name for itself with delicious Cajun steamed shrimp--an entire pound for only $10.50, with spicy cocktail sauce and melted butter. OMG, people, you have to order it.

I am serious, you have to.

Groupers’ Grouper Rueben is out of this world, and their grouper sandwich and grouper tacos are only $7.50 and are absolutely amazing. Yes, I’ve had them all.

As far as Groupers’ BBQ, their smoked ribs, chicken, salmon and mahi sandwich are all to die for, just take your pick. Each one costs between $7 to $9 and change.

This no-frills joint, where customers talk to one another and quickly become friends, is like nothing you’ve experienced. It's the toast of Indian Rocks Beach and beyond.

"We come here at least two to three times a week. You just can't get this food or prices anywhere else," a local customer told me.

The beer and wine prices at Groupers are also crazy. As in crazy good. Bud Light, Yuengling, Miller Lite and Shock Top drafts, yes, Shock Top, are o n l y $1.75.

Donkey, a very popular IPA brewed in Tampa, are only $2.75.

The Italian wine is also on tap. Yes, I said on tap, and it is only $3.00 for a 9-ounce cup.

Groupers offers raw, steamed and grilled oysters on Wednesday nights.

On Sundays, they also serve up a new crawfish boil.

Here is the deal, folks: I can lead you to cheap beer and wine

prices but I can't force you to drink, and if you don't get your butts to Groupers and try some of their amazing seafood and BBQ, there is nothing else I can do for you. Read the reviews on Google and Yelp.

Groupers is the real deal.

This hidden jewel is tucked away in the corner of a business center. If you sneeze, you will pass it by, so just Google it and you will find it.

By the way, Groupers is only open at night, so don't go rushing over there for lunch. They open at 5:00 p.m. every day.

n real estate, a normal inventory level is a six-month supply. At this level, there is an equal number of buyers and sellers, which leads to a real estate market where prices rise and fall in line with inflation.

Above a seven-month supply is a strong buyer's market and below a five-month supply is a strong seller's market.

Today we have a four-month supply of Gulf front houses priced below $1.5 million. Intracoastal properties go to $1M before exceeding a four-month supply.

Homes not on the water top four months at $750K. Gulf front condos don't exceed a four-month supply until we reach $750K;

Intracoastal condos between $500-750K is at a 5.2-month supply. All other condos reach a buyer's market at $500k.

When I look for any indicators to slow demand, allowing supply to catch up, I can't find any. Interest rates on a 30 year mortgage are at 3.95%. The new tax laws will bring a ton of money back to the U.S. which will be invested here.

The jobless rate is below 4%.

This all indicates wages will be rising as business expansion adds jobs. Income taxes for individuals is declining under the new law, so people will have more money to spend. The only negative is the amount of new construction coming on the market in

price points where there is already an oversupply of condos, but if I can believe the builders, they are selling out in most cases before completion. There is almost no new construction on houses until the buyer places the property under contract.
