Treasure Island ready to spend Penny funds By Scott Lancaster
I
n November, Pinellas County voters will be asked to once again approve a measure that will extend the local “Penny for Pinellas” sales tax for another 10 years and Treasure Island officials are planning on what do if it’s a go. Penny for Pinellas is an extra one percent sales tax paid by residents and visitors to Pinellas County. The proceeds are used to fund various county and municipal capital improvement projects, including things like street paving, landscaping and community lighting upgrades. Approximately 30 percent of the tax revenue is derived from tourist spending. In anticipation of November’s vote, officials in Treasure Island have begun compiling a laundry list of city projects that need attention, to the tune of nearly $9 million. If the measure is approved, Treasure Island’s piece of the pie will amount to about $6.9 mil-

By Jason Coffman You see, in 2004, the late U.S. Rep. C.W. "Bill" Young saw to it that the city got a $50 million federal grant to replace the old drawbridge. The catch was the city would have to do away with the existing toll, which it did in 2006. Now, the city needs that toll revenue and despite assurances from the Federal Highway Administration, they will be seeking an outside legal opinion to support the legality of it.

Clearwater Beach looking to combat parking problems By Beth Ludwig

fter years of complaints from Clearwater Beach residents, city officials are mulling the idea of implementing a parking pass ordinance that would prevent beachgoers from parking on residential streets in the area’s beach neighborhoods. The new proposal, as discussed by Clearwater City Council members, would only allow parking permit holders to park in certain north and south Clearwater Beach neighborhoods. Property owners in the affected areas would be required to purchase the parking permits at an annual cost of $75 for two passes per address. Additional passes could be purchased at a reduced rate if extenuating circumstances could be shown. Daily and weekly permits would also be available at a cost of $5 and $25 each, respectively. BELLEAIR BEACH - The Belleair Beach City Council got down to the nitty-gritty in discussing two possible solutions to address the city’s flooding problems. The latest solution, proposed by Dr. Larry Fluty of Engineering Sciences Group, would involve updating the city’s aging stormwater infastructure, with larger pipes, new swales and curb inlets and more.
would include Bayside Drive and Devon Drive at the south end of the beach, and a good portion of the North Beach streets between Juniper Street and Acacia Street. Some council members felt there were several issues that would need to be addressed, while others, including City Manager Bill Horne, felt this was a good option for alleviating residents’ longtime parking complaints. The council agreed to obtain further research on the implementation of such an ordinance, to be discussed at a later date.

IRB wants oversight for PSFRD INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - Indian Rocks Beach Commissioner Ed Hoofnagle, who is currently suing the Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District over the wording of their funding referendum in November’s election, would like to see a county review process for the management of the fire district. Hoofnagle was clear in his opinion that the oversight process should only pertain to the financial management of the district, and other commissioners agreed to move forward to figure out how to accomplish this.

With over 40 million records sold and a catalog of hits, Astley remains one of the most successful solo artists to have emerged from the United Kingdom, holding the distinction of being the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top Ten. Just 21-years-old when he released “Never Gonna Give You Up,” Astley’s iconic hit became the UK’s biggest selling single of the year, going on to reach number one in 16 countries. Aqua Prime:
A polished, casual atmosphere with a fresh, coastal cuisine

If you like Bonefish, you are going to love Aqua Prime. Why, you ask? For many reasons. For starters, and probably the most important reason, the head chef of Aqua Prime worked as a chef at Bonefish for six years. So take Bonefish and throw it on the beach and voila, welcome to Aqua Prime. But let me say this, the reason I love Aqua Prime is because it's not Bonefish. Don't get me wrong, I love Bonefish's food but it's a little too stuffy for me. Those of us who live on the beach, we know that we are different from the real world. Yes, we are more laid-back. Yes, we wear sandals to all restaurants, regardless of how upscale, and, yes, we are hard-working professionals just like those who frequent Bonefish. We are just a tad cooler. No, we are. And Aqua Prime owner Steve Wesphal, Executive Chef Jason Vargo and General Manager Johnny Morales know that. So while we are laid-back, we also are picky. We are perfectionists and we want the very best, which is exactly what Aqua Prime's top brass make sure they
deliver. And truthfully, it's probably one of the best kept secrets on the beach, until now, of course. I absolutely love going there to have a couple of cocktails on their outside patio, or to have dinner. The atmosphere blows Bonefish's interior lounge away. Because those of us who live on the beach do not want to be trapped inside a stuffy cocktail lounge, but we do like to be surrounded by other classy, intelligent beach folks. Moving on. On my most recent visit, I stopped in to check out Chef Jason's new menu and, OMG, thank the Lord I did. For starters, I had the Mediterranean salad, a house mix blend with a variety of fresh greens, topped off with fresh roasted red and yellow golden beets, feta cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes and white bean salsa, served with housemade red potato salad with pepperoncini and a side of Balsamic herb dressing. Most people know I'm not a salad kind of guy, but it was delish.

'n' cheese (Cavatappi pasta with lump crab meat and shrimp in a lobster cream sauce, with smoked Gouda cheese and toasted panko crumbs and fresh scallions). I also had the
pleasure of experiencing the Gulf grouper, which was a fresh, hand-cut filet grilled with Aqua Prime's signature seafood spice and topped with a creamy coconut curry sauce. Oh my gosh, people. All dishes were out of this world. Chef Jason is the real deal. Bonefish lost a big fish, but fish have got to swim, and thank God he swam over to Aqua Prime. Make sure you ask for Amanda to serve you. She is extremely pleasant and on her game as a server; she is exactly the type of server you would expect at Aqua Prime. I was impressed not only with the amazing food Chef Jason creates, but also with the awesome service and atmosphere. Aqua Prime has also become known as a hot spot for some of the best local live entertainment in the area. I know, it's obvious I love the place. You will too! Bon appetit!
