COVER

STOP

AHEAD Treasure Island moves closer to reinstating causeway tolls. By Daniel Holloway

T

reasure Island officials are still mulling the legality of reinstating tolls on the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge, but they are also working together with the city of St. Petersburg to develop a plan for maintenance of the causeway. They hope that this partnership will help to prevent any possible lawsuits that may arise from the implementation of the tolls. You see, in 2004, the late U.S. Rep. C.W. "Bill" Young saw to it that the city got a $50 million federal grant to replace the old drawbridge. The catch was that the city would have to do away with the existing toll, which it did in 2006. Now, the city needs that toll revenue for maintenance of the bridge and despite assurances from the Federal Highway Administration, city commis-

sioners have agreed to spend $35,000 on an outside legal opinion to support the legality of it. Many local residents say they are prepared to fight if a toll is reinstated to cross the bridge, saying they shouldn’t have to pay to leave their homes. In the meantime, Treasure Island officials have been working with officials from the city of St. Petersburg to devise a plan for the maintenance of the east side of the causeway, which lies within St. Petersburg city limits. The city of Treasure Island currently pays around $135,000 a year just in maintenance for that part of the causeway and city officials would like St. Petersburg to assume responsibilty for it in the future. The two cities have agreed to jointly ask State Rep. Kathleen Peters, RSouth Pasadena, to sponsor a bill that

would give the city $1.5 million to restructure that side of the causeway. Along with resurfacing the road and improving drainage, the project would also involve the construction of a 10foot wide pedestrian and bike path. The city of St. Petersburg would be in

charge of the project once funding is in place. The thinking is that the cities will be able to demonstrate a big cost savings by working together on the project, and hence, have a greater chance of receiving the state funds.

BEACH BUSINESS

Madeira Beach finally says yes to new project By Scott Lancaster

A

fter months of contentious back-and-forth amid height and density concerns from residents, as well as the impact on the already problematic traffic situation in the area, the Madeira Beach Town Center development was recently approved by the city commission after developer Bill Karns voluntarily downsized his plans. The new Madeira Beach Town Center, considered the “gateway” to the city, will include hotels and condominiums, as well as retail space and restaurants. The new plans for the project, which covers the area from 150th Avenue and part of Madeira Way to Gulf Boulevard, reduces building height by up to 21 percent. The two hotels proposed on the site will be lowered to eight stories

each. The original plans had the hotels slated for 11 stories. In doing this, the hotels will lose 114 rooms, bringing the total number of rooms to 316. One of the hotels planned for the development will also offer around 40,000 square feet of retail space. Similarly, the two condominium buildings will drop two floors, coming in at six stories instead of the original eight, but the overall number of condo units will remain the same, at 90 total. An important part of the plans involves the Triangle Plaza green space, that city officials anticipate will be a welcome addition for both residents and visitors alike. A second and final hearing to approve the project is planned for the commission’s regular meeting this month.

St. Pete Beach mayoral race heating up By Beth Ludwig

T

hree candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the position of mayor of St. Pete Beach in the upcoming March municipal election, a race that could get ugly. The mayoral candidates are Interim Mayor Deborah Schechner, John-Michael Fleig and Alan Johnson. Schechner had previously said she would not run for the position, but then changed her mind because she said no other qualified candidates had stepped up. This reversal has not sat well with commissioners Melinda Pletcher and Ward Friszolowski. The other candidates, Fleig and Johnson, had both also applied for the interim position that went to Schechner last summer. Johnson is a retired engineer who has lived in St. Pete Beach for 18 years. He currently serves as chairman of the city’s Finance and Budget Review Committee and has been active on

In Brief ICYMI: Shark jumps, guys freak out INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - In case you missed it, a trio of fishermen were returning home from a day of grouper fishing when they spotted a large mako shark in the waters about seven miles off the coast of Indian Rocks Beach. Naturally, they decided to try to catch the shark, using some amberjack as bait. Sure enough, with video tape recording, they hooked the shark

numerous other boards and committees. He feels it is important to preserve the feel of the city while promoting tourism. Fleig has lived in Florida for over 12 John-Michael years and is an owner Fleig / of Baywaters Inn. He Facebook feels it is important to plan for the city’s future in regards to growth and stability, and is opposed to pension plans for city employees. Fleig feels the city has been financially irresponsible in the past. Fleig’s own past recently came back to haunt him when it was revealed he had been convicted of accessory to murder after the fact in 1997. He had originally been charged with murder for his role in the killing of a friend’s uncle, but maintains he had no active part in the killing, only that he later knew about it.

By Seth Young and that’s when things got exciting, with the shark jumping several feet out of the water repeatedly, until it eventually got loose and swam away. Clearwater Beach’s biggest development open for business CLEARWATER BEACH - After years, and I mean YEARS, of planning, philanthropist Dr. Kiran Patel has finally opened his hotel, the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach. The striking two-tower resort sits just steps from Pier 60 and offers 343 rooms facing either the Gulf of Mexico or the Intracoastal Waterway, with signature dining options and more than 22,000 square feet of event space – including the Dunes Ballroom, the largest in Pinellas County, which can accommodate up to 800 people. The resort also features an open-air lobby, a pool overlooking the beach, a full service spa and a 24-hour gym.

MUSIC Man At Work: Colin Hay at the Capitol Theatre By Daniel Holloway

C

olin Hay is familar to millions of people as the frontman of the Australian band Men at Work, with several hits in the early 1980s, including “Down Under,” “Overkill,” and “Who Can It Be Now?” Born in Scotland, Hay emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of 14. It was there that Hay met Ron Strykert in 1978. The men began playing acoustic music as a duo, forming the core of the band Men at Work, with Hay on vocals, guitar and keyboards, and Strykert on guitar, vocals and bass guitar. They added Jerry Speiser (drums), John Rees (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Greg Ham (flute, saxophone, keyboards, vocals) to eventually round out the band. The group released their debut album Business as Usual in 1981 and attained much commercial success before breaking up in 1985. Since then, Hay has reinvented himself as a solo artist, regularly selling out theaters across the U.S. and around the world and introducing himself to a new generation of fans in the process.

“I started off playing acoustic; it’s my natural game, if you will. It’s the point I started from and may well be the point I end with. It’s always what I return to.” ~ Colin Hay

Since moving to Los Angeles in 1989, Hay has kept busy in the music world. The frequent use of his music in TV and film has proven the timeless appeal of his songs. Hay has also released 11 critically-acclaimed solo albums, including the highly successful Man at Work, and last year, he released his most recent album, Next Year People.

Colin Hay will return to the Capitol Theatre on Feb. 19, with tickets on sale for $29.50, $39.50 and $49.50. The Capitol Theatre is located at 405 Cleveland St. in downtown Clearwater. For more information, visit www.atthecap.com or call the box office at 727791-7400.

By Cliff Roe Broker/Owner Roe Realty

S

ince 2005, I have offered my views on the status of our local real estate market. I have also presented my forecast and my rationale. I am proud to say I have been much more accurate than the media. This year should be a banner year for real estate. Mortgage rates are going up. People tend to buy when interest rates are rising to beat the next increase. People wait when rates are falling, hoping to capture the bottom. This is very bullish for real estate. The government has been selling non-performing loans to investors at a deep discount, always the same investors (Goldman Saks, etc.). Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be going private, putting an end to the discounted sales. This is very bullish for real estate.

real estate prices to increase 5-7 percent. Retirees will benefit from higher interest rates, giving them more money to spend. Florida will return to a pattern of rapid population growth, and housing prices will keep pace with or exceed the national average. Our younger generations, who have only seen wars, stock market crashes and a housing bubble, will notice the value of home ownership and return to the market. This is very bullish for real estate.

In 2016, Florida saw an 8.1 percent increase in home prices. Unit sales declined largely due to shrinking inventory, which helped push prices up. Very bullish for anyone wanting to sell real estate. I'm predicting inflation in the area of 2-3 percent annually. This will enable

we have properties to sell.

M

y conclusion is a better and more stable real estate market for several years to come. At Roe Rentals, we have already seen an increase in investor interest toward owning rental property. We are averaging 45 days to contract and 102 percent of asking price due to having more buyers than

R

eal estate has historically been the safest way to leverage debt and build equity, and that stability combined with the above factors will make 2017 an excellent year in real estate.

Cork N Brew Bistro: More bragging rights for Clearwater Beach

F

or most of us living on the beach, we tend to stay away from Clearwater Beach, in the past partly because of its reputation for drawing a young and rowdy crowd, but those times have changed. Clearwater Beach has recently become the destination for young professionals and those of us a step behind, who still enjoy going out for a cold drink or a glass of wine and an awesome dinner. The Sand Pearl and the new Opal Sands Resort are only a couple examples of developers and business owners choosing Clearwater Beach as a place to set up shop in hopes of drawing a more professional audience. The latest to join forces with the likes of the Sand Pearl and Opal Sands is Cork N Brew Bistro. Although Cork N Brew is not a new restaurant and bar, it does have a new owner, Shane Bittaker, who brings decades of culinary talent along with a new vibrant and casual atmosphere to target those same professionals, but at a much better price and more intimate atmosphere.

Cork N Brew not only has one of the more inviting outside patios but also an extremely cozy dining area, tailored with high-top booths. You have to see it to know what I mean. On my most recent visit I nestled in to one of the high-top booths and was quick to order one of their tasty craft beers. By the way, Cork N Brew has over 20 beers on tap. Yes, I know, a beer lover's dream. In addition to the great selection of craft beers, Cork N Brew is well known for its lava rock items, a rare cooking method offering healthy dining, as no fat or oil is used in the preparation. A lava rock is heated to 824°F (460°C), and the selected entree is served raw, allowing diners to cook the proteins to their own desired degree of doneness. It is also served with a variety of delectable dipping sauces to enhance the flavor of the meal. The best way to describe it would be sort of like the Melting Pot but not nearly as much work. It's a lot easier and more fun.

Cork N Brew Bistro 524 Mandalay Ave. Clearwater Beach 727-239-0833 On this particular evening, I chose to go with the Jumbo Sea Scallops Siracha Aoli, with Sake Soy and Spicy Thai Chili. OMG. Out of this freaking world.

I also ordered the Black Truffle Margarita pizza, which was to-die-for. It was amazing. Some of the other items on the menu include Filet Mignon Bearnaise Aoli with Spicy Thai Chili and Horseradish Cream; Surf & Turf Filet Mignon with your choice of Sea Scallops or

Tuna, served with Horseradish Cream, Ponzu and Spicy Thai Chili; Lamb Tenderloin Bearnaise Aoli; Cuban Flatbread Mojo with Roasted Pork, Sweet Cured Ham, Salami, Havarti, Pickle and creamy Mustard Sauce for only $9.95; and much more. The best thing to do is go to corknbrew.com and check it out. But truthfully, you really owe it to yourself to just go there with a friend, business partner, loved one. Hey, let's not forget Valentine's Day is coming up. Book early. Currently, Cork N Brew is open in the evening with plans to open for lunch as early as February. By the way, the parking situation does look deceiving, but there is no shortage of it behind the business and across the street. Truthfully, Cork N Brew is becoming the go to place for happy hour for the who's who of the beaches. And even guys like me. Yes, it is that cool. See you there!
