2018 Building, Home & Remodeling ShowSM Booth Sales

The 2018 Building, Home & Remodeling ShowSM will be here before we know it. Scheduled for March 2, 3, & 4, 2018, the time for planning and booth selection is NOW! We recently surveyed our exhibitors and due to an overwhelming response, have decided to do things a little differently this year. You will receive an email notifying you when the booth contract will be available to fill out. You must submit the booth contract along with your deposit in order for your booth(s) to be reserved.

Our hope is that this makes it easier and saves time for our exhibitors by being able to secure booth space online. Please watch your inbox for more information! President’s Message This will be my final President’s message. I know that leaves many of you heart broken. Knowing the anticipation and excitement of waiting for the mail carrier to deliver the Cornerstone just Byrne Turner so you can read my message is coming to an end. All good things must come to an end, or do they? We are currently engaged in one of the more significant battles we have had in recent years and it is over your mail delivery. The United States Postal Service is moving toward cluster mailboxes in new developments. They have already made them mandatory in Madison. This means mail will no longer be delivered directly to the homes but to a designated area where the cluster mailbox is located. We need each member to contact your representatives and voice your disapproval of this. Tell your relatives and neighbors to do the same. You can go to this website for more information: http:// savemymailbox.com/. You can bet they will move on to existing neighborhoods as soon as they have implemented this change across all new developments.

sponsors who donated and the volunteers who worked to pull off the event and make it a success.

Only 300 tickets will be sold with all proceeds going to the Foundation Scholarship Fund. Where else can you get a 1 in 300 chance at $10,000?

I cannot express what Lynn has meant to this association. She has been here for 32 years. She helped form it into the association it is today. HMCBA would not be where it is today with Lynn. As president, you relied heavily on Lynn to help you navigate through the job. Lynn kept you on track and gave you all the support you need. In other words she made you look good. Lynn will be missed. Her experience and knowledge of our association and industry was second to none. I want to personally thank her for supporting me. I want to thank the staff and each of you for this opportunity to serve as your President; it has been an honor. I hope everyone has a blessed year. I also want to welcome Wendy Lee our incoming President for 2018 and wish her the best of luck.

Major Changes for the Association This has been a big year with changes for the Association. Lynn Kilgore retired on September 28th. We hired a new E.O. Barry Oxley who started on August 1st. If

W The Fall Home & Garden Show took place August 26-27 and was a huge success. I want to thank all of the exhibitors, countless volunteers who made the show possible and the many sponsors. W The Sales and Marketing Council hosted a Lunch and Learn event on September 11th – “Generational Content Gap”. The speaker presented a lot of great tips on marketing to the different generation. Retiring After 32 Years of Leadership After 32 years as Executive Director of the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association, Lynn Kilgore will be retiring the end of September. On July 15, 1985, Lynn began her tenure as Executive Director with 235 members. The Association has grown to over 1,000 members and has one of the most successful home shows in the State of Alabama, which she began in 1988. Additionally, the Association produces a Fall Home & Garden Show and the Parade of HomesTM along with a bass tournament, golf tournament, and other activities. The Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association has received numerous accolades and awards throughout her tenure. These awards were won in large part due to Lynn’s leadership and commitment to the success of the organization. These include winning the Home Builders Association of Alabama President’s Trophy (1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1996, 2002 & 2006, 2010, 2012). Additionally, the Association has received numerous awards for Best Governmental Affairs

Program; Best Public Relations Program; Best General Membership Meeting; Best Service to Members for the Building, Home & Remodeling Show; Best Education Programs; Best Community Service, Best Publications, Best Communications to Members (newsletters/magazines); and Best ABPAC Fundraising Program. She obtained her CAE (Certified Association Executive) professional designation through the American Society of Association Executives and the BIAE designation through the National Association of Home Builders. She has served as Chairman of the HBAA Executive Officers Council, and served on the NAHB Executive Officers Council Board of Directors as well as other committees on the national level. She received the Seldon Hale Career Achievement Award from the National Association of Homes Builders for her achievements and contributions to the Association, the community, and other Executive Officers. This Award is the highest honor any Executive Officer can receive from NAHB.

Lynn will be sorely missed by the members of the HMCBA. She leaves behind a strong foundation for the Association to continue to build upon.

Governmental Affairs There have been several Government Affairs issues over the recent months that need to be highlighted. We hosted on separate occasions a City of Madison and City of Huntsville Roundtable. For each meeting their cities Director of Engineering, Director of Building, and Director of Planning attended those meetings to field questions from our members. City of Madison Roundtable At the City of Madison Roundtable information was shared about a new policy requiring foundation surveys after the footing is completed to verify the exact placement on the lot. This is a result of larger homes being built on smaller lots. In addition, Madison has created a portal online to schedule inspections and submit applications for permitting. This will both expedite and ease the process of inspections and permitting for builders. City of Huntsville Roundtable The City of Huntsville Roundtable was well attended and productive just as Madison’s Roundtable was earlier in the summer. Each department head shared an update from their respective departments. Be on the lookout for zoning changes. The City of Huntsville is developing new zoning options so that the city can make way for popular mixed use developments. This will provide the opportunity to build many residential and commercial developments to improve the work, live, play theme Huntsville is building. Much of this can

be seen in the new Downtown Master Plan that will be carried out in the coming years. Engineering is in the process of creating an updated drainage plan that will be friendly to both builders and the consumers. The Building Department is now engaging in Huntsville Utilities Energy Program that enforces the recently adopted State of Alabama Energy Code. This program will provide a means to plan energy efficiency before construction ever begins. Please be on the lookout for continued updates on these changes. Cluster Mailbox Update One issue we have been diligently working through is the issue relating to cluster mailboxes in new developments. There has been multiple instances that have occurred in our region. This has been a frustrating battle with the Unites States Post Office due to a lack of cooperation. We will continue meeting with them to fight against this mandate. The Home Builders Association of Alabama is assisting us in this fight by providing funding to spread the word about this overreach of government. Please do not hesitate to contact us if a cluster box situation arises in your area. We are constantly collecting facts about this issue and need all the info we can get. Build-Pac Fundraiser Also, we have been doing a Build-Pac fundraiser by selling bottles of Jefferson’s Reserve Bourbon. The price is $100 per bottle and this money will increase our

war chest for political contributions. With 2018 being a major election year this is vital to our ability to back candidates that support the building industry. There are a few bottles remaining. Please stop by the office if you would like to purchase one. Energy Code Press Conference In August we hosted a joint press conference between Huntsville Utilities and the three major municipalities in the County to talk about the recent legislation adopted by the State of Alabama regarding the energy code. Augustors Tommy Battle and Paul Finley were on hand with Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong to discuss the importance of these relationships and this program of county-wide energy code compliance, which is the only one of its kind in Alabama and one of the few areas in the southeastern United States to have a clear and simplified path for state energy code compliance. To have across the board cooperation from the different local governments, Huntsville Utilities, and the Association is something to recognize. Thank you to all involved in this process and especially Larry Denman’s team from Huntsville Utilities’ Energy Services Division. Their newly created method will make it easier for builders to be in compliance with new energy standards, and with the entire county utilizing this method it will erase the pain of having to adhere to differing standards depending on where you are working in the county.

Wesley Kelley (right), President & CEO of the Huntsville Utilities, discusses the importance of the county-wide energy code compliance program while (left) Madison County Commission Chairman Dale Strong, City of Madison Mayor Paul Finley and City of Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle listen on. 8

Industry Career Council Our Industry Career Council has led the efforts in forming a Plumbing & Gas Fitters Night Program. This is the first program of its nature for any Association in the state. The state looked to our group for leadership on this workforce development initiative and our group delivered. The program provides the resources and information necessary for apprentices in the plumbing and gas trades to sit for their journeyman’s exam. In addition, it knocks the state’s two year requirement of working in the field down to one. With a shortage in the plumbing and gas fitting industry this program will expedite the process of providing higher skilled workers. This in turn will alleviate some of the pressures this industry is seeing when it comes to their workforce. The first class consists of 12 students from the area and they are already off to a quick start. This program started in August and will run through the month of May. We hope that this will not only turn into an every year program for us in Huntsville/Madison County, but also for other Associations throughout the state. We will look at converting the format of this program to other trades where there is a workforce deficit as well. Without the diligent work from our Industry Career Council this would not have taken off. The group is already looking at other opportunities to develop more programs in the near future.
