from the

president

Wendy Lee, LeeHouse Home Building

Is it just me, or did 2018 fly by?! Seems like I just wrote my first message and, here I am, writing my last. A busy year, but definitely a great year! And what huge changes for our Association! A new logo to help in branding us for the future. A new website with space for profiles for all our outstanding members. A schedule of educational programs that are not only informative, but timely in reflecting the state of the North Alabama construction market. I highly encourage all of our members to take advantage of these exciting new initiatives. As we look forward to next year, our focus is on key areas that are relevant to all our members. Workforce Development initiatives are never far from any of our minds these days. We have taken great steps in 2018 and hope to lengthen our strides in 2019.

Attend the socials and networking events. Join a committee or council, support our causes. You will find that it benefits you personally and professionally, as much as it does the Association as a whole. I also want to point out, no one does this job alone. Thank you to the members and staff who made this such a great year for me!

Wendy Lee

For those of you who don’t know Justin Click, our incoming President, introduce yourself! I am confident he is the right man, in the right place, at the right time to lead us forward.

executive officer’s HMCBA Executive Officer, Barry Oxley

message

Every member that I talk to continually talks about how busy and great the home building market is in our area. We are blessed to be a part of a growing community. Here at the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association, we are very busy implementing changes to meet YOUR demands as members of the Association. We are so very excited to release our new consumer driven website - thehomebuildersal.com. The site is designed to make it easier for the consumer to find YOU, the member. We have an area on the website to “Find a Professional”, "Find a Builder, Remodeler or Subdivision" and an Interactive Subdivision Map. The website features articles for the consumers that explain the building process, building fraud information, and more! Also, through this page, you can access hmcba.org and your very own individual GrowthZone member portal. The member portal will be very helpful for our members. Update your information, sign up for Association activities, view your invoices, update your profile and so much more. It's like having your own mini website on the HMCBA website! Those members that choose to populate their profiles , will stand out to consumers. This is a free member benefit that we encourage everyone to take advantage of.

Other new and exciting information - we are very pleased to share with you that the Association is forming two new professional groups. The Young Professionals Group is meant for any HMCBA member in the building industry that is 45 and under. Activities will be centered on networking, socials, service and professional development. We are also forming a Professional Women in Business Group. The Professional Women in Business Group will be open to all women in the Association with a focus on networking, education and professional development- oh yeah, fun! Look for more information coming to you very soon in 2019. Thanks for making our Association a great one. I look forward to seeing you at our next event.

have you seen our thehomebuildersal.com

new website?

The HMCBA has released a brand new, consumer-facing website - thehomebuildersal.com We are the second Home Builders Association in the United States to develop a consumerfacing HBA website. This new website features three different tools to help consumers search for members - an advanced search option, a customizable search funnel (builder members only), and an interactive subdivision map (builder members only). The advanced search features all member categories and displays members in their designated category. The advanced search also allows the consumer to search by keyword. All members will be able to customize their profiles, which will populate the advanced search information. The customizable search funnel allows the consumer to search for builders, remodelers, and subdivisions by name, price range, and category. This search feature is for builder members only. The interactive subdivision map features dropped map pins and allows the consumer to search for builders by subdivision location. When the consumer hovers over the pin, the subdivision name, builder name, photo, subdivision website, and subdivision price range appears. This is a paid feature and is for builder members only. If you would like to take advantage of these search functions, please contact Rachel Weidley at rachel@hmcba.org or at (256) 536-2602. thehomebuildersal.com is the consumer's single source for everything, inside & out!

showcase home

Next spring, the Association will unveil the 2019 Showcase Home, as part of the 2019 Parade of Homes, on April 27-28 & May 4-5. The purpose of the Showcase Home is to market the talents and resources of the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association members. The proceeds of the Showcase Home directly impacts the mission of our Association. We would like to extend a special thanks to Enfinger Development for their offering of the 5.2 acre home site at Watson Grande Preserve at McMullen Cove. We are also very excited that Bryan Pogue of Matrix Builders will serve as the construction manager of this beautiful home. The wooded lot, with fantastic mountain views, will display a spectacular 5,100 square foot home with 4 bedrooms, 4 full and 2 half bath, a hearth room, living room, study, dining room, mud room, family planning center, laundry with dog wash, upstairs bonus room with views, and a 4 car garage.

The home's success comes from a combined effort of our members who embrace the opportunity to showcase their products or services to the community, backed with the power of a high profile marketing campaign led by the Association. We would like to thank over 30 of our members that have already made a commitment to this great project. If you would like to participate in the 2019 Showcase Home, please contact Barry Oxley at barry@hmcba.org or (256) 536-2602.

FALL 2018 | THE CORNERSTONE | 11

what’s

HOT in

Content Provided By: Haley’s Flooring & Interiors

There’s something about the kitchen that just warms the heart. The smell of fresh baked cookies, warm winter stew simmering on the stove... countless hours of homework being done at the kitchen table and remnants of glue from leftover projects, family meetings and friends that have gathered... oh, if the walls could talk. It’s the heart of the home and that special place where memories are made. So, if you’re thinking of designing a new kitchen or just updating your space, check out these hot trends that will make your “heart” smile!

1.

1. POPS OF COLOR Everything from pink stoves to blue kitchen islands, we’ll see pops of color mixed throughout the entire kitchen. If your flavor is still white cabinetry, mix it up a bit with a colorful island, back splash, or accent piece. You can add a little color without committing to the entire kitchen and it will give your space an updated look.

2.

2. FLAT PANEL DOOR STYLES Straight lines and simple designs have led the marketplace over the past few years with the ever-so-popular Shaker style. This year however, you’ll see even more simplicity with flat-panel doors. Shaker style will still remain a favorite. These new flat-panel doors will offer sleeker finishes and textures.

3. GEOMETRIC PATTERNED BACKSPLASHES While subway tiles are not on the back burner yet, geometric shaped tiles are heating up this year. You’ll see these geometric designs, not only in the shapes of the tiles, but the patterns of the designs as well. Styles like chevron, herringbone, and hexagons add interest and dimension against the straight lines of cabinetry. Subway tiles will be larger and wider this year.

3.

12 | THE CORNERSTONE | FALL 2018

kitchen trends 4.

4. CABINETS WITH COLOR Some of the new colors that are cooking up this year are navy, green, black, and dark charcoal. With jewel tones coming back in the picture, you’ll see these popping up in the kitchen, too. Of course, white will still be a popular favorite for now, but you can spice it up with a pop of color just about anywhere.

5.

5. LOW-MAINTENANCE SPACES From floors to counter tops, it’s all about consumer-friendly products that are easy to clean and simple to maintain. Look for LVP, Luxury Vinyl Planks, to continue growing in popularity this year. It’s easy to clean, looks and feels a lot like actual wood or tile, and is extremely durable. You’ll also see larger tiles on the floors and walls with minimal grout lines, making it easier to keep clean. Speaking of easy to clean, the low maintenance of quartz counter tops will dominate this year and not just on the counter tops, but cascading down the sides to make a waterfall design.

6.

6. MIXED-UP FINISHES Design trends for this year are really mixing things up. Instead of clean lines and soft finishes, bold and confident colors are dishing it out. When they are blended correctly, mixing different metal finishes like drawer pulls, faucets, and pendant lights can give your space personality and pizazz.

While these are just some of the trends for 2018, these happen to be a few of our favorites. Design trends are constantly changing... out with the old and in with the new. The past few years have been all about soft, clean lines and simple designs. This year, it’s a beautiful mix of soft and bold! FALL 2018 | THE CORNERSTONE | 13

association CITY OF HUNTSVILLE ELECTION RESULTS The City of Huntsville Municipal Elections were held on Tuesday, August 28th. Here are the results: For Huntsville City Council District 2, Frances Akridge edged out Mary Jane Caylor and Keith Ward. In District 3, we supported Jennie Robinson and she won with 73% of the vote. In District 4, Bill Kling, our pick for that districts City Council, won handily as well.

news The Huntsville Board of Education held three of their districts race as well. Two of those races had no opposition. Beth Wilder in District 2 and Elisa Ferrell in District 3 both won their races with no opposition. The District 4 race was between Walker McGinnis and newcomer Ryan Renaud. 2018 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE We are proud, humbled and excited to be chosen by the National Homebuilders Association (NAHB) as one of only six associations in the country, out of over 3300, to hold a membership drive in conjunction with NAHB. New members joining our Association between September 25, 2018 through October 24, 2018 will receive over $1,000 in incentives from NAHB and over $800 in local association incentives. A Kickoff Party began the season on September 13, 2018 at the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association (HMCBA) office. We introduced our 12 Team Captains and they began recruiting their teams! On September 25, 2018, we welcomed the NAHB representatives. This was Training Camp! Our workshop with Anna Tilley of NAHB coached us on the details and best practices of new member recruitment and retention! Our 12 teams will compete against each other on October 23 and 24, 2018. This is Game Day! The team that recruits the most members will win the “Grand Prize” and possibly more importantly, Bragging Rights! A Post Game Party, recognizing our new members and our participating teams will be held on October 30, 2018. This is an incredible opportunity for our Association and the future of the construction industry in North Alabama. The skills learned during this season will help preserve the legacy and expand the foundation of our association for years to come. Expanding the scope and visibility of our association and its members into new fields of construction related industries will benefit the whole and each individual member.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT UPDATES Our Association is undertaking many initiatives to promote the construction trades to garner more interest from youth and young adults and help create education opportunity so that individuals can get the proper training to enter the field. Here is an update highlighting our efforts. A major step in reaching kids and educating the education community has been creating marketing material. We have partnered with Lowe’s Home Improvement and Generation T, a resource that provides data, graphics, and visuals that makes the trades attractive, to develop our own marketing

material. We have created brochures that highlight salaries, career paths, and a side by side comparison of the financial benefit of choosing a trade versus the financial burden of taking on debt in college. We also launched our own website, gobuildyourfuture.com. It lays out similar info as Generation T, but is a landing page that people can not only see the benefits of learning a trade, but also get information about our Association and who we are. We encourage you to check it out! With our new marketing materials, we have been meeting with large numbers of guidance counselors and career coach’s, students, parents, and even one on one meetings to help people realize that the trades can be a great way to make a living and gives you the opportunity to be an entrepreneur. We have started the second year of our plumbing and gas fitting course, which speeds up the process of becoming a journeyman. If you are in the plumbing or gas fitting field and have an apprentice card, you are eligible to take the journeyman’s exam after you have graduated our course. In 2017, we put 11 students through the course. This year, we are at max capacity of 15. This has been a great success with instant results.

SUMMER FAMILY PICNIC We had great fun at the Family Picnic on June 21, 2018! Special thanks go to our sponsor and gracious host, Wilson Lumber for the perfect venue and incredible grilling skills! The combination of those chefs and the sides from Ted’s and Steak-Out set a new bar for summer cookouts! Beverages from Straight to Ale and Huntsville Coca Cola were the perfect complement to the festivities! The Picnic was also a blast for the kids - they enjoyed a bouncy slide, frisbees, chalk, yard games, cotton candy, and snow cones! The highlight of the evening was the honoring of the Foundation Scholarship Recipients. The Huntsville Madison County Builders Foundation presented scholarships to five students in the amount of $5,000. Below is a list of the students, their field of study, and the college or university they will be attending. Thomas Dunn – Building Science – Auburn University Tyson Lee – Construction Engineering – University of Alabama Caya Perry – Architecture – Mississippi State University Alex Rankin – Civil Engineering – University of Alabama Chandler Sealey – Electrical – Northeast Community College

END OF SUMMER BASH What a way to celebrate the end of summer! (At least on the calendar!) The presence of our ABPAC supported political figures reminded us Fall is not far away and how important it is to remain informed on important issues facing our industry! A turnout of over 200 members, with lots of new faces and lots we haven’t seen in awhile lent to the feel of a family reunion. Mad Malts Brewery served possibly the most diverse crowd our Association has brought together under one roof! First time visitors to Preservation Company, our fantastic sponsor for this event, were wowed by the renovation to this historic building and the incredible selection available at this great store! Our hosts, Jason and Christa Butler, have put together a new showcase of antiques and salvaged items for the North Alabama area! To all the young faces in the crowd, Welcome and we are happy to see you! To all our new members, Welcome and make yourself at home! To all our industry veterans, a huge Thank You and “Keep On Truckin'!” This event was definitely an exclamation point on a great summer for our Association! FALL 2018 | THE CORNERSTONE | 21
