- Steve Steele, Steve Steele Custom Homes National Home Remodeling Month

In the month of May we celebrated National Home Remodeling Month. Throughout the month we recognized and promoted members of the Association’s Remodeler Council through social media and advertisement on the website. Our remodeler members bring a multitude of skills and qualities to successfully execute a home remodeling project. These qualities include: customer service, business management, integrity, experience, longevity, and creativity. The highlight of the month was when Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle signed a city proclamation declaring it National Home Remodeling Month at our General Membership Meeting. We were proud to be able to recognize our talented group of remodelers.

Lunch & Learn at City Lumber

In addition to celebrating National Home Remodelers Month, the Remodelers Council hosted a Lunch & Learn at City Lumber. The group toured their show room and truss shop, and learned about some of the newest remodeling trends that City Lumber has to offer. City Lumber was an excellent host and offered the group informative and useful information about their business and process. Be on the lookout for more Lunch & Learn’s throughout 2017!

Regulatory Affairs Update YOUR MEMBERSHIP AT WORK FOR YOU!

Current Alabama Legislative Activity any violation that requires a pay out from The Alabama legislature underwent another tumultuous session these past several months. There were many heated exchanges throughout the session. Many of the divisive issues included: redistricting, autism coverage, confederate monument protection, and crossover voting ban to name a few of the most time consuming hot button topics. The Home Builders Association of Alabama had two similar bills to be introduced SB 268 & this session. One bill introduced in HB 341 the Senate (SB Revisions to 268), and one in the Licensure Laws House (HB 341). Each bill dealt with the revision of the home builder’s licensure law in Alabama. Essentially, each bill would reduce the threshold for licensure from $10,000. The original bill lowered it to $1,000 but later was amended to $5,000 for a building license. In addition, it created a roofer threshold for licensing for work over $2,500, and allowed the Home Builders Licensure Board to revoke experience and qualifications in addition to the license of

the recovery fund.

Unfortunately, neither bill was able to be passed due to constant filibustering and delay of the legislative calendar. The legislature spent a great deal caught up on just a handful of issues and the bill was unable to pass. We do thank our members that made an effort to contact our legislative delegation urging them to vote yes. We will recoup and get ready to try once again next year.

Special Election in August

As always, Alabama politics never cease to entertain. In the most recent shift in Alabama politics, Governor Ivey called for a special election to be held this August for the vacated Senate seat of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Senator Luther Strange currently holds the seat that was appointed to him by former Governor Bentley. With such a quick turn of events and a short time to prepare for the election it has been a whirlwind. There are a handful of candidates that have announced their

candidacy. Most pundits believe it will be a three person race between Senator Luther Strange, Mo Brooks, our current Congressman for North Alabama, and former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice, Roy Moore.

New Gubernatorial Candidate

Mo Brooks is not the only North Alabama politician making a splash on the statewide scene. Current Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle announced his candidacy for Governor of Alabama. He is hoping that his achievements as Mayor that have led to unprecedented development and job growth for Huntsville will resonate with Alabamians statewide and he can continue that success in Montgomery. We were lucky to have Mayor Battle speak to our Association at our May general membership meeting. He was able to share some of the astounding growth statistics in the Huntsville region that directly impact the building industry, and outline his vision for the state as he works toward taking the next step in his political career.

Jim Jones Member/Guest Bass Tournament Winners

With a total weight of 21.06 pounds, James Smith and Blake Gray, sponsored by Renasant Bank, walked away a little richer than they came, claiming $1,000.00 and the title of “First Place”! Below are the 2nd – 3rd place winners: 2nd Place: Matt Horn and Cody Bentley, Slaton Custom Homes; 18.34 pounds 3rd Place: Scott Brady and Tom Ott, Crosstek Construction; 17.36 pounds The Big Bass Pot went to James Smith and Blake Gray of Renasant Bank with a bass weighing 6.5 pounds.

Industry Career Council Journeyman’s Education Program

The Industry Career Council has been hard at work the past several months developing a night course for professionals in the plumbing and gas fitting industry. It is no secret that the construction trades are desperate for a major improvement in their workforce. This program will begin addressing the need for higher credentialed plumbers and gas fitters. The class will begin in August and will take place at the Madison County Career Tech Center over a nine month period. Any plumber or gas fitter with a current State of Alabama Apprentice Card can enroll in the class. The aim of the program is to provide the educational tools so that the students of the program are well prepared to take and pass their journeyman’s exam so that they can become a licensed journeyman. In addition, the program has been state approved by the Alabama Plumbing and Gas Fitters Board so that the time requirement of being an apprentice is reduced from two years to one. We hope by expediting this process, it will incentivize individuals in this industry to take the next step in their career which will lead to higher wages, allow jobsites to be in compliance with the law, and narrow the gap of needed workers in the field.

1

Our Association will be the first in the state under the Home Builders to implement a program of this nature. We expect great results and hope this leads to other parts of the state conducting the same program and also developing similar classes for other construction trades.

New Members

Upcoming Events

We’ve welcomed 78 new members so far - if you see a new face around, please be sure to say hello! To continue growing our oustanding Association, we are asking for YOUR HELP! We especially need each of you to keep encouraging your employees to join HMCBA as Affiliate members. To encourage more involvement and participation within the Association, the Affiliate membership fee is only $35.00. Affiliate members recieive all mailings from the HMCBA staff, keeping them connected with their industry colleagues. For less than $3 a month, your employees really can’t afford to miss out on this opportunity!

Membership Benefits

As a HMCBA member, are you taking advantage of the benefits you receive through your 3-in-1 membership? Remember - when you joined your local Association, you were automatically enrolled as a member of HBAA (Home Builders Association of Alabama) and NAHB (National Association of Home Builders). Did you know that you are eligible to receive member mailing lists and address labels through HMCBA?

“High Stakes Poker” Membership Drive

Have you heard about our 2017 “High Stakes Poker” Membership Drive? All HMCBA members are eligible to enter into the poker game by recruiting new members throughout the year. For each new member recruited, all recruiters will be dealt a card(s) at the year-end game. The 1st hand winner will win $2,500 and the 2nd hand winner will win $1,000! Recruit TODAY and play poker for a chance to win BIG!

Retention Calling

We hope you have joined us at Retention Calling this year! At the end of the year, we will be giving away $500 cash to one lucky participant. To be eligible to win, you need to attend a retention calling event, and you’ll automatically be entered into the drawing. For each time you attend, you’ll receive one entry. We also give away $25 cash to two attendees, on the spot, each month during Retention Calling. Come join us, make a few calls, have a free lunch, and maybe win some cash!

Be sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming event, “From Boomers to Millenials: How to Market to Different Demographics.” It will be held on September 11 from 11:30am – 1pm, venue TBD. Our speaker, Kristen Scroggin, is the founder and owner of Workplace Training Solutions as well as a Communication Arts Lecturer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. This informative event will focus on marketing to different generations. We encourage you to bring your sales teams and colleagues to this informative seminar. It’s going to be a great event that you won’t want to miss! Our last event of the year, “Social Media 102”, is designed to help you with your 2018 marketing strategy. Our speakers will be Benita Hampel of Haley’s Flooring and Haley Buie of the Pugh Group. Be on the lookout for more information delivered to your inbox on this event shortly. If you’re interested in joining the Sales and Marketing Council please contact our staff liaison Theresa Kennedy at theresa@ hmcba.org or 256-536-2602.

Remember, DO BUSINESS WITH A MEMBER!

Our members take their pledge to “do business with a member” seriously and membership means more opportunity, more collaboration and more referrals. We’re looking forward to the remainder of 2017 .
