The ignition is turning over but the engine is not kicking into life! We have only got a couple of hours to get to Rome airport, “what’s happening” but no reply is forthcoming from our taxi driver. We all pile into the second minibus and wait patiently, now overloaded, and not allowed to move as its prohibited to have more than 8 passengers and we have 9. Panic is setting in as time ticks away when another taxi turns up, the jump leads are attached and the vehicle bursts into life, we again decant into the two revving taxi’s and we are away. I leave the grandkids in the other taxi as our departure to Birmingham leaves before their Glasgow flight so our minibus is first away, I keep my beady eye on their taxi now behind. The drivers’ mobile rings 25 minutes into the trip and I can make out in “Pidgeon English” that there is a problem, I say nothing until the airport is in sight. Is there a problem, I enquire thinking the taxi has broken down again, “no, one of children has not been well” he replied! On arrival I find out my grandson Ben had puked all over the seats, how lucky am I to have changed cabs as I was originally sitting next to him!
CHAIR OF THE TRUST –CHRIS BROWN

The weather was only average this summer, however from a sporting perspective it was memorable as England had a great Euros only falling at the last hurdle to Spain 2-1. That was the 2nd international football final within a year featuring England against the same opponents with sadly the same outcome.

While disappointing the Euros final pulled the crowds into the Sportsmans Rest throughout the competition and the final attendance was amazing, so thank you one and all.

The Olympics and Paralympics were also very successful for Team GB so a big congratulations to all those dedicated athletes and Paris was an amazing venue. However, my favourite watch was not the Aussie breakdancer “Ray-gun” who competed and scored zero points, but the golf, both the Men’s and Women’s competition which was played at a very high standard and in my opinion the 5th grand slam tournament! The competition was amazing and what a finish with Tommy Fleetwood getting pipped by 1 shot by Scottie Scheffler for the gold medal.
Which brings me nicely to my next topic, golf. On 27th August the Shenley Leisure Centre embarked upon its next exciting venture, the construction of two modern golf simulators. The area to be developed is at the back of the centre where the garages are currently situated and the new facility should be ready to be opened by the New Year. We are already speaking to interested groups about the use of the building and are very happy that we will be able to attract a new tranche of customers to our popular leisure centre. So, watch this space for more information on our new attraction and I hope you will all be very excited about this news.
So once more, it’s off now to rejoin the queue for Oasis tickets online, but I expect that by the time I get to the head of the line, they will have split up again. Anyway, it is always better to take part than to watch and if you want to take part then Shenley Leisure Centre is the place to do it. Chris and his team are ready to assist you on your choice of appropriate fitness programme, give them a try.
Thank you for your custom.
I’m now off to Kent to pick cobnuts.
Chris

Well, what a summer of sport and how quickly has Autumn snuck up on us. The Euro’s final seems a distant memory ago, thank you to those of you that showed your support right up to the final, what a shame they couldn't quite hang on for extra time.
Our Summer half price offer was well taken advantage of and the August Bank Holiday event was also well attended, thank you to all of you that came along. Cheeky Dog and Tim Heights will be back in the near future I’m sure. Mid September saw us say goodbye to Shenley Pre-School who closed their doors for the last time. Shenley Pre-School has been a constant for the leisure centre and the community for almost as long as the centre has been in existence. We wish Jodie and all the other staff the very best in their next venture. Thinking about the children until the very end Shenley Pre-School have handed over the setting to Buttons Pre-School. Buttons are looking forward to getting children in and have been making improvements to the facility. Monday 14th October is their opening date and contact details with more information is coming up in the issue. What’s the Drama have also left the leisure centre to move to Loughton Memorial Hall, it was a pleasure hosting them for the last 3 years but we’ll be seeing them back at the centre soon for their Christmas performance, bazaar and other events.
The Sportmens Rest recently hosted a 30th year of Bunky Chollox FC, a football team that has played on our pitches since 1994 and are one of our longest running bookings. You can read more this later in the issue. September saw us also host a celebration evening for Rick Townsend, who recently was awarded a BEM Rick is well known for his involvement in MK Athletics and contribution to Sport MK. A great occasion for everyone that could not attend his medal ceremony at Sheffield Town Hall.
Some exciting news is that Teen Fit will be returning for the first time since the pandemic. Details are in the issue. We will be having a New Years Eve party in the Sportsmens Rest, details will be circulated soon, the bar will be open Christmas day 12.00-14.00.
More exciting news is that there is a new facility being built, as mentioned in Chris Brown’s editorial. Keep scrolling to find out more.
