An Editorial from the Chairman of the Trust, Chris Brown

I was skimming through the Sunday papers when I noticed a big photograph of Sir Chris Hoy and another picture of the journalist Matt Rudd standing in a queue of blokes. Reading the article I soon realised it was about Prostate Cancer, I read on. I have been thinking of getting the test done for ages so I got in touch with the MK Prostate organisation and luckily, they were running a blood testing clinic at Abbey Hill golf club the following weekend. I signed on the dotted line, paid my £25 and turned up promptly for my allocated 10:30am spot. The whole test took no longer than 10 minutes and I received my results the following day via a green email for a negative test result of 1.44 psa, easy and a great relief. Just a little disturbing was fact that I posted my decision to have a psa test on my blokey WhatsApp groups and I didn’t have anyone contact me to also take a blood test, that’s the male gender, I guess.

I am pleased to report that this is the first time in quite a few years that Shenley Leisure Centre have returned a profit for the financial year. Therefore, I am delighted to be able to congratulate Chris Passfield and his hardworking team for producing such a turnaround at our beloved leisure centre. The pandemic was a once in a life time event and then compounded by the reinforced autoclaved aeriated concrete (RAAC) national scandal which kept the sports hall and gymnasium closed for 15 months put a real strain on the centre. However, here we are today in a good place, so for our loyal customers and clubs who continued to roll with us, we say thank you.

I attended an evening organised by MK County Council (MKCC) for sports clubs in the area, so I trotted along representing the Shenley Boasters Squash club. I wasn’t really sure what the MKCC were trying to achieve but after lots of slides, interactive questionnaires, strategies, and deep diving we did manage to establish a few common problems among other sports clubs. O mentioned was a mechanism for netwo which is needed. I think there is some m exhibition in the leisure centre to help w space.

I am also pleased to announce that “Sh are now officially open after much expe a chance to pay the facility a visit as it project which has now finally arrived.

Updates from Chris Passfield, General

Since our last edition we have been busy testing and trialing the new Shenley Fairways facility. Thank you to those that ‘trialled’ the area and I'm delighted to say we are now open for bookings. More information coming up and details of an official opening will be available in the coming weeks. The Sportsmens Rest pool team made it into two cup semi-finals and only just missed out on automatic promotion into the top division. Well done and not bad for their second season. The two darts teams we host are also going strong as we head into the summer break.

Quiz nights on Mondays are proving as popular as ever, none more so than the one held for Sid Hewitt in April. Until fairly recently Sid had been helping run the quizzes with Dave Hall for some 30+ years. Dave Hall kindly set up a quiz night to help his wife Bev pay for transportation amongst other things as they adapt to challenges Sid’s health has provided.

Our Duty Manager, Dave Parkins has passed his level 3 fitness qualification and has now joined Charlotte Briant as a personal trainer. Packages are available to book which you can see later in the issue.

We have been in discussions with the General Manager of Abbey Hill, Robin Cheng and are excited to be collaborating with the organisation. Having Shenley Fairways open will provide Denbigh students, new participants, the casual player and the scratch players somewhere to play whatever the weather. Robin and his team have kindly offered discounted rates at Abbey Hill for Denbigh students and will provide time to coach Denbigh students in Shenley Fairways, as well as offering taster sessions to beginners in our simulators too. Details on this will be available soon. We look forward to a summer of sport with the Woman’s Euro 2025, the Lions Tour, Wimbledon, Golf, Cricket, F1 and the return on the Premier League on Friday 15 August. th

Pre-School Report

As we head towards the summer holidays we are super excited to be sending 7 Buttons off to big school, all joined us at our beautiful Shenley Church End setting during the last 2 terms, they have all made remarkable progress and whilst we will be sad to say goodbye we know that they will shine in their new schools. We are looking forward to welcoming all our new Buttons in September and can’t wait to share our lovely setting and resources with them as we prepare them for their journey into primary school. Some of the highlights of our time so far have been, visiting Santa in his Grotto at CMK, we took the bus and enjoyed a walk around the wonderful display at Middleton Hall, we pop across to Sainsburys weekly and buy our snack shopping and ingredients for cooking, we have regular walks around the local community and visit the local amenities and shopping centre.

We are also excited to be preparing for our annual trip to Dinoland at the end of June, we will all go on a double decker bus over to the park, spend the whole day completing activities, have lunch and then enjoy lots more fun, this is our 10 year of taking all children on this wonderful adventure so watch this space for photos. th

Buttons are an Ofsted Outstanding provider in 10 of our locations, the model of early years care we offer is exemplary, we offer sessions to suit parents, accept all funding

streams including Tax Free Childcare, extended families and time for Twos, we also offer wraparound care and holiday clubs across much of the portfolio. We are lucky to have a beautiful room within the leisure centre and our very own purpose designed garden, we are outside all day every day, come rain or
