I can’t believe it, we’ve got two tickets from the ballot first time ever! On receipt through the post, Caroline and I donned our summer hats and travelled down to SW19 for the All-England Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Thursday 5th July. I hadn’t been to the Tennis since the early 70’s when as a local schoolboy I was selected to be a ballboy. My claim to fame was that I was in the 1972 guard of honour at the men’s final between Stan Smith and Ilie Nastase where the American won in 5 sets. At the trophy presentation I shook hands with the Duke of Kent as he strode down the lines, what a privilege. And wow has the All-England club changed since those early days as the whole complex must have quadrupled in size! We had seats on court number 2 and arrived when the Aussie Alex de Minaur had just completed the win against the Dane Holmgren. Two women were then due to play, an American and a Czech lady called Barbora, who

An editorial from the Chairman of the Trust, Chris Brown scraped through to the third round. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t see any big stars playing and it was only when we left to go home that, I saw a large poster at Southfields station showing last year’s winners only then did I realise that the Czech lady was the 2024 Women’s Wimbledon Champion!

Now to leisure centre news, the Astro turf pitches unfortunately closed towards the end of June after the temporary patch had failed again. This is a double headed problem because the closure of the pitches means that there is no revenue from the pitch bookings which leads to low-take on bar sales as footballers love an opportunity to give a post mortem of the game over a beer. Therefore, it came as excellent news that Chris Passfield in collaboration with the management of Denbigh school have agreed that the pitches need a total refurb so I can announce that the new astro turf will be ready for fervent competition again by the end of October at the very latest,

I know Chris will be mentioning the official opening of the golf simulators which happened on the 19th September 2025 with the mayor of Milton Keynes, James Lancaster cutting the ribbon and getting the new facility up and running. However, from my prospective as a “hacker” it has been a real pleasure to trial out the facility and the feedback has been amazing, so I encourage you to get a round booked at one of the many famous courses on the system, you will be hooked.

Sticking on the positives, I was

chatting to my neighbour the very affable John Petrie who is an avid user of the fitness classes at Shenley Leisure Centre and has been a member for many years. Unsolicited, he was full praise for the excellent work that the Shenley team is putting into running a great centre and he wanted me to pass these comments on, so I consider that task done.

As we approach the last part of the year we look forward to having a

brand new 3G astro-turf surface installed on both pitches. This will be

welcome news to our football bookings who have been inconvenienced while we awaited confirmation that a full relay could take place. We should be able to welcome our football bookings back by the end of

October with a quality surface to provide reliability, consistency and

playability that we all expect. Another important improvement coming in the near future will be toilets and changing room refurbishments.

Passfield, General Manager

This will no doubt improve our customer experience and enhance the facilities we offer.

I’d like to say a thank you to the staff and trustees for their support throughout the year. The hard work ‘behind the scenes’ is really a team effort and everyone plays their part to deliver the service the public expects. The leisure centre is beginning to show signs of getting back to pre-covid levels which, when you think about the unexpected closures in the sports hall, gymnasium and astro-turf we’ve faced over the last few years; credi
