Register Your Voice It is hard to believe we are nearing summer’s end, yet here we are. 2020 has been nothing like any of us had expected. Many of us have faced professional, personal, and pandemic trials, yet we continue on.

Heidi McCutcheon, Chamber Director As I consider the future, it becomes even more apparent that the most important thing that we can do is exercise our right to vote. Our elected officials are our leaders. They set policy and enforce laws. Ideally, they carry out the will of the people. Sometimes that is in line with our personal beliefs, sometimes it is not. I do strongly believe that if you want to comment on or complain about the government, you should utilize your American rights to vote.

Some folks argue that their vote doesn’t make a difference one way or another. In the past decade, I have seen local elections where less than ten ballots cast the other way would have declared a alternate victor. A leader who would have differing decisions and priorities, who would have shaped our community in a far different fashion. Our ability to affect the vote in Mason County is just one more great thing about living in a small community. Our vote matters.

In Mason County, you can register to vote in person, by mail, or online. To register online, you simply need your Washington ID Card or Driver’s License. Go to voter.votewa.gov and enter your information on or before October 26, 2020. To register in person, you can go to the Mason County Auditor’s Office, located at 411 N Fifth St, Shelton. You can register until 8:00p on Election Day. However, staff is busy running the election, so I recommended that you do so in advance.

This autumn, we have many choices to make that will affect our state, our district, and our county. Our Chamber, along with the North Mason Chamber, will host online candidate forums to introduce you to the candidates, ask questions about polices, and learn about individual platforms. I hope you will take the time to watch and learn about those who have consented to serve our community through public office. If there are questions that you would like to see asked, please contact us – we are always interested in what our neighbors want to know.

What a whirlwind. So much has happened in the last several months and it seems that every day brings new challenges. I’m sure you’ve talked about how hard things have been. I know I have.

As I spoke with Chamber staff earlier this week, I was reminded that it’s time to open nominations for the Chamber’s annual awards.

As I reflect on 2020 thus far and look beyond the struggles and strife, it was a blessing to remember how the year began.

Habitat for Humanity received 2019 Community Supporter of the Year. Each step of the way I was grateful and surprised: when I received the call that we had been nominated, then told that we made the final slate, and ultimately heard our name ring out at the Awards Gala. Mason County is filled with people who do the right thing for the right reason… and we were recognized for our part.

It was a humbling experience.

Mister Rogers said, “Look for the Helpers.”

I see them. People are stressed, many businesses and nonprofits temporarily closed and a few closed entirely. Yet, others

have reinvented themselves, helped one another – even their competitors – created new opportunities, and given back to this community in amazing ways.

I encourage all of you to nominate the unsung heroes in our community. Consider the business who gives you great service with a smile, the nonprofit that went beyond the call of duty, the person down the street who always volunteers, the boss who takes the time to mentor staff, or the business who has become your new favorite. Help us acknowledge them by taking the time to fill out a nomination form. Let them know that someone has noticed their deeds. That they are helping and making a difference. United Way Aids in Funding Community Resources Within days of Washington State shutting down due to COVID, the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound began planning on how to best support the community.

Together with United Way of Mason County, they partnered to create a funding mechanism to help bridge the gap between identifying needs and connecting resources.

“We currently have shared more than $60,000 in funds across Mason County,” says Ted Jackson, the executive director of the United Way. “The first thing we did was give $5,000 to six area food banks.

The Community Foundation matched that funding, for an additional $30,000.” March to June, area food banks reported a nearly 30% increase from what they typically have seen.

In addition to the increased ask, the supply chain broke down and food banks were only getting half of their typical allotment. The quick infusion of cash made it easier for food banks to meet the demand.

Focusing on United Way’s three main areas of income, health, and education, the organization has continued to fund various community organizations to ensure that money gets into the hands of those who need it most. Crossroads Housing and North Mason Resources are among those who received support to help with rent payments, utilities, food, and more. Consejo Counseling & Referral Service and Prince of Peace Church received funds to help the Hispanic population with the same services. Jackson

United Way staff has picked up supplies from local food banks and supplemented with additional groceries, delivering them to families in quarantine due to COVID. shares, “They are far more likely to go to someone they already have a relationship, like their church, than they are to arrive at a food bank.” Likewise, organizations like Shelton Youth Connection and Community Lifeline also received grants, much of which went toward laundry tokens and other basic needs.

The senior population has been another main area of focus, with Meals on Wheels and the HUB each receiving $5,000. “We need to make sure that our seniors are connected and cared for,” Jackson says.

“These organizations have the relationships, we helped with funding.” He shares that

United Way has also played a big role in handing out physical resources like face coverings. “We’ve distributed more than 27,000 masks so far,” Jackson says. “We’re stepping in to help however we can.”

The United Way still has well over $50,000 to leverage in supporting the community as we move into the next phase of recovery. “We’re currently considering how to structure who gets remaining funds so that we can stretch it as far as we can. We need to be highly vigilant to make sure it isn’t spent frivolously,” he says.

Maple Glen Focuses on Authentic Connections It was early March that Life Care Center in Kirkland made headlines as COVID-19 swept through the organization. When the news reached executive director Monica Decicio of Maple Glen Senior Living, she knew that they needed to take immediate – and drastic – action to ensure the safety of her residents and staff.

to leave the grounds. “We’re checking people’s temperature and oxygen stats twice a day, as well as disinfecting the property every four hours. It’s exhausting, but it is worth it to protect our residents and staff, while giving them a sense of normalcy,” Monica says. “We are still serving meals inside apartments rather than in the dining room, but we are now able to convene a few small groups. Ten or less people, spaced at least six feet apart and wearing masks, are now able to convene for activities like Bingo or craft classes. It’s made a big difference to increase morale.”

“Initially, we closed down the entire property,” she says. “No one could visit the residents and none of the residents were permitted to leave the premises. It was extremely tough.” She shares that the only thing that made it bearable was the staff, who she says has gone above and beyond.

With residents confined to their own apartments without visitation, staff took on additional roles, often unasked, to help the residents feel connected. Staff played everything from the role of IT Trainer, showing residents how to connect via Skype or order certain groceries via Instacart, to that of Beautician washing, setting, and cutting hair.

They have given their extra time and their energy whenever they could.

Staff also came up with some innovative ideas to allow families to connect, staging four “visitation stations” outside the front doors.

Residents and their visitors are spaced six feet apart (with masks required) allowing for muchmissed face to face conversations.

Things change at a rapid-fire pace. What is common today is out of date tomorrow. I let them know I will keep them up to date as soon as I have information but it’s difficult not knowing the answers. They rely on me.”

She echoed again that one thing has made all the difference. “Our staff has been incredible. They volunteer to help and jump in without being asked. They go above and beyond repeatedly. They really are amazing.”
