When you look back on your life, do you remember the people who helped you get to where you are today? Whether it was a supportive family, a wise mentor, or a teacher or manager who believed in you, we can all point to someone who helped light the way for us. However, many New Yorkers do not have the support system we all desperately need. At Sheltering Arms, we have the unique opportunity to give that assistance and light the way for thousands of children and families every year. Thanks to the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our board, and the generosity of our sponsors and supporters, our programs and services provide brighter futures. Children learn literacy and math skills to succeed in school. Foster youth are placed in safe, stable environments. Those afflicted by homelessness, extreme poverty, and trauma are strengthened and healed. Teens are able to turn their lives around and receive the resources they need as they transition into adulthood. Tonight, we will celebrate all that we have accomplished together and look toward our future. We are proud to honor our youth who are making a difference in their communities as well as David A. Hansell, Commissioner of New York City Administration for Children’s Services and longtime advocate for the rights and well-being of New York City’s children. Please visit our program tables to meet some of the youth involved with Sheltering Arms, hear their goals and dreams, and learn all of the ways they are contributing to their communities. Together, we can light the way for future generations.

Mayor de Blasio appointed David A. Hansell Commissioner of the Administration for Children’s Services in February 2017. Commissioner Hansell has committed his career to serving vulnerable communities and expanding opportunity for low-income individuals and families. An accomplished manager, he has decades of experience in social services work across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. At HHS, Hansell helped oversee a division with an approximately $50 billion annual budget, with responsibilities including child welfare, economic support, early childhood education, and special population programs. In his role, Hansell helped implement the “Fostering Connections to Success Act” to improve services for older youth in foster care and enhance educational continuity. At New York State, Hansell was Commissioner of the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, where among other things he helped achieve a historic level of household participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through the Working Families Food Stamp Initiative, and helped reform New York State’s child support programs to heighten compliance and increase payments to custodial parents and children. He has also served as Chief of Staff in the NYC Human Resources Administration, and in various leadership roles at the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, where he managed a portfolio of HIV treatment and prevention programs. During the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, he was the Director of Legal Services and Deputy Executive Director of Gay Men’s Health Crisis. He was a former aide to two U.S. Senators, and began his career as a sixth grade teacher. Hansell has served as a consultant to several non-profit, government, and philanthropic organizations on a diverse array of health and social services policy and advocacy issues. Just prior to coming to ACS, he was Head of KPMG’s Health & Human Services Center of Excellence. Commissioner Hansell is a graduate of Yale Law School and Haverford College.

Make a Pledge To truly transform the life of a child in New York City, we need the support of leaders like you. Here are a few examples of what your generosity delivers. We invite you to Light The Way for our city’s most vulnerable. $2,500 can pay for a homeless youth to have a professional internship with a mentor. $1,000 can cover a career exploration trip for low-income children in our Afterschool Program. $500 can supply instruments for our music therapy program and heal trauma among at-risk youth. $250 can provide a new library for an Early Childhood Education classroom. $100 can cover professional attire for a Foster Care teen pursuing their first job.

Visit a station to meet the youth in our programs. Youth representing some of our programs are here to share their stories with you. To learn more about the positive impact our programs have, ask a youth ambassador a question: • • • •

“Can you tell me about your program at Sheltering Arms?” “What are some of your goals for your future?” “How are Sheltering Arms’ staff helping you achieve your goals?” “What are some challenges you have overcome?”

Meet our Youth Ambassadors Genesis and Anthony both spent their teenage years living in the foster care system.
