MEET SOME OF OUR NEW
Congratulations to everyone on an impressive performance for 2022 During this last year we have grown the size of the company, increased our stature in the market and developed the range of solutions that we offer to our clients.
Our Global Functions team has cemented its position as a trusted advisor to Citi, where they are called upon for the most senior executive searches, while also building similar reputations at HSBC, Barclays, Credit Suisse, AMEX and within the FinTech sector.
In our CTS Technology sector team we continue to work with exciting start up and growth businesses that are changing the world we live in, spanning deep tech, software and biotech We have recently welcomed both Symbiosis and the team in San Francisco allowing us to increase our impact and coverage of such an exciting sector.
Within the CTS Services practice we have continued our excellent work with major clients such as EY, Deloitte, IBM, KPMG and Newton whilst also winning new logos including Clarivate and Alvarez & Marsal that have produced significant revenue this year.
The Global Real Assets team have grown expertise across Real Estate, Infrastructure and Energy and hold a stellar reputation in the industry, working with a range of clients including Partners Group, Cerberus and Blackstone, which through cross selling is becoming a key account for the wider Sheffield Haworth group.
We give credit to the Global Banking team who have persevered through a difficult period and conducted high profile searches for a number of well known institutions that include HSBC, Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Barclays, UBS, Truist and demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit in developing new clients such as TD, Latif & Company and Evans & Partners and successfully introducing Leadership Advisory for a project with Santander Similarly our people in Global Markets have worked tirelessly during the year to hold onto a leading position with Bank of America whilst winning impressive mandates at Barclays and Credit Agricole.
Our Insurance team has grown this year which is now a recognised as a leader in the Insurtech sector and through prolific marketing is building a profile across the wider industry
The Wealth and Asset Management team hold their stature as industry leaders, not only in the traditional, alternative and wealth sectors but we have also been one of the first companies to build a specialism in ESG, which in addition to the impressive work conducted by Interim, Change Consulting and Leadership Advisory demonstrates our capability to provide innovative solutions to clients. A special mention is also due to the US WAM team who have generated more than $10mn in fees, a truly impressive achievement
It is also worthy to note our global expansion where this year we have seen the teams in the Middle East, India, Australia and China elevate the Sheffield Haworth brand through their industry leading reputations.
As we continue on our path to be the leading talent consulting company we have grown the Change Consulting team and we have delivered major projects and solutions for Morgan Stanley, M&G and Bank of America We also made an important step in establishing a Strategic Client Research and Advisory practice, which under the leadership of Richard Stein got off to a running start and will be a differentiator for us going forwards. Data and intelligence are increasingly important to our clients and with this in mind we are delighted to welcome Jubayer Kalam to lead the exciting growth of our TALNT product.
Thank you once again to everybody for making this a great year.
-Executive Management CommitteeI fell into contingent sales recruiting shortly after graduating as an escape from feeling restricted in the graduate trainee programme I had initially joined Despite being an unplanned move into an industry I knew nothing about, I fell in love with the world of recruitment – a people-orientated business with the opportunity to constantly learn from more experienced and senior clients and candidates I loved the cut and thrust of contingent recruiting too. From this environment, I quickly gravitated to retained Executive Search as the area I could have the most interesting conversations with senior people and work on a far more consultative basis After several years working for leading Tech sector specialists and a short but wonderful stint leading international Talent Acquisition for one of my client software companies, I started Symbiosis Search along with a close colleague
I love the Tech sector! BUT, I love the business of Tech far more than the Tech itself I’m an economist by background and I love the creative destruction of capitalism What makes some companies and industries succeed and grow fast? How can an idea morph into the world’s most valuable company in less than a decade? For me as a mid20s economics and business graduate, I looked at the Tech sector and its ability to create, grow, disrupt and destroy value as the industry that had these traits on steroids – i e above all other sectors. I decided I just had to be in the Tech business and particularly in the world of Enterprise Software as, to repeat a well-known industry phrase, software eats the world
I joined SH in November 2022 as part of the acquisition of Symbiosis Search – the Software sector-focused Executive Search specialist I founded with Nick Povey twenty years ago.
What projects are you looking forward to working in Sheffield Haworth?
I’m excited about this next chapter in my career and most looking forward to collaborating with colleagues on complex international senior talent Searches in Tech where we make game-changing hires – hires which change, pivot, disrupt, accelerate and drive huge value for clients and investors Impactful hires I can look back on with pride. I’m also looking forward to bringing our other service offerings, aside from Executive Search, to our Software clients
Who in your career has been a role model to you?
My boss at Blue Martini Software – the then VP Global Talent Acquisition He was actually a long-term contractor to the CEO at the time and ran his own successful boutique Search firm in Chicago focused on the Enterprise Software sector With a great nose for talent and a wealth of knowledge and expertise working at different growth stages with start-ups and scale-ups, he was a credible advisor and confidante to some of the industry’s most well-known Executives at the time As well as learning a great deal from him, he also gave me some of the inspiration and courage to set-up Symbiosis Search after the Dotcom Bust
Tell us something people might not know about you/do you have any hidden talents?
I like to think I rock karaoke (though I’m firmly in a minority of one on this according to my family) with my go-to being Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer or Wanted Dead or Alive
I entered the recruitment industry by chance and without knowing too much about it soon after graduating from university I worked for a leading UK contingent sales recruitment company and progressed to managing one of their regional offices On joining, I found myself instantly dealing with candidates and clients with a wealth of experience that knew much more than I did that I could learn from. It was a challenging and disciplined new business sales environment that gave me a good grounding for my career in Search I then moved into Retained Search in Technology and Software with two companies, Parity and then Norman Broadbent, before setting up Symbiosis Search just as the Tech sector was recovering from the Dotcom bust
I’m really looking forward to taking what we’ve built as a group at Symbiosis Search and developing it further within a bigger business, with a broader offering and a truly global footprint Sheffield Haworth has assembled a talented team across CTS and I’m excited at the prospect of working and collaborating with them on challenging senior level international searches for some of the best companies on the planet
When I first started focusing on the tech industry in the late 90s, the demand for GTM talent was exploding and it was an exciting space to be working in It was a fast moving sector, creating globally dominant market leaders within the space of a few years, led by some of the smartest entrepreneurs and business leaders I was attracted by the opportunity to work in a sector that was disrupting traditional industries, where software was starting to underpin every function of a business, and is now baked into every aspect of company’s operations, products and services
I joined SH in November 2022 following the acquisition of my company, Symbiosis Search, that I founded with Andrew Parker back in 2002. We’re now part of Sheffield Haworth Technology, along with seven other fantastic Symbiosis colleagues.
Who in your career has been a role model to you?
I wouldn’t say I’ve had one standout role model I’ve worked with some amazing colleagues and alongside some talented leaders within clients that I’ve learned loads from Before I entered the world of work, my uncle was a big influence He was a sales leader at a FTSE100 FMCG company, was very driven and helped me in those early years at the start of my career Once I’d established my career in recruitment, I came across a number of people that had started their own business in Search that I took inspiration from to set up Symbiosis.
Tell us something people might not know about you/do you have any hidden talents?
In my youth, I thought it would be great to be a professional football manager and 7 years ago I was given the opportunity to start up my son’s grassroots football team, which I still manage today at U14 level I think I’ve reached my limits in that profession!
What’s your background?
My background is in product marketing, with a specialism in digital acquisition I worked for an international publishing company for 13 years across many different brands and target audiences before moving in to the talent industry 4 years ago. What made you join the Consulting industry?
I had a career change due to my circumstances at the time, so it was initially the role specification rather than the industry. I spent 4 years at an accountancy and law recruitment firm and built their marketing function from the ground up It was a great experience, and I found that my product marketing background was complementary to the consulting industry.
When did you join?
I joined SH in October 2022
What projects are you looking forward to working on at Sheffield Haworth?
Sheffield Haworth has a fantastic reputation in the industry, and I am very much looking forward to amplifying awareness of the organisation and working with the practices to develop their marketing strategies.
Who in your career has been a role model to you?
I've been fortunate enough to work with highly talented and passionate teams and people throughout my career. My standout was my boss in my first role in publishing. He is an exceptionally kind, intelligent human being and an excellent people manager who showed me how leading with kindness and integrity gets the best out of people - he was also a fun person to be around!
What is your favourite book, film and tv show?
Difficult question to answer I am a prolific reader The book that affected me the most when I was younger was 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' by Maya Angelou. Film - The original Blade Runner TV Show - Curb your Enthusiasm My husband is a comedian and reminds me of Larry David!
What’s your background?
My entire professional career has been in client services for human capital management & executive search
What made you join the consulting industry?
It was an opportunity to combine my two passions, people and technology.
As a young boy I was passionate about my friends and gaming, even better when I could combine the two As an early adopter of computers/the internet, I realized what a tremendous tool technology is for solving problems or making work easier
When I graduated college, the tech market was beginning to rebuild post dot com bust and client services specifically focused on digital commerce was about to explode into a trillion dollar industry
I was enthusiastic about helping support the growth and proliferation of the tech industry by finding and recruiting top talent to high growth companies
When did you join?
I joined SH in December 2022
Who in your career has been a role model to you?
My grandmother, Margaret Rodriguez She did not have a traditional career, by today’s standards, however, she was a strong and outspoken leader in her family, career and community Wife to a loving, but high maintenance husband Mother to four loving, but high maintenance children She was both homemaker and entrepreneur (well before it was the cool thing to do). Her care and attention for people – family, friend or stranger – are unmatched Her care and attention for her grandson, me, are unmatched Through the years she has provided me with so much wisdom Her radical honesty wasn’t always easy to receive or what I wanted to hear, but it was always what I needed She was a person I could always count on, a lesson I still take forward as husband, father and leader Be someone people can count on and you will always be able to count on others.
Tell us something people might not know about you/do you have any hidden talents?
I am a descendent and grandson of the Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca (Baca), ca 1490 – ca 1559 One of the earliest Europeans to set foot in the new world, he was the first historian of Texas and the American desert Southwest.
What projects are you looking forward to working in Sheffield Haworth?
Building the Global Tech practice into one of the highest performing practice areas in the firm
What’s your background?
Former head of digital strategy at UBS Prior to that, I used to be in consulting with BCG Switzerland.
When did you join?
I joined SH in December 2022
Who in your career has been a role model to you?
My first boss at BCG who was also the head of the Zurich office has really been my mentor and the person from who I learned the most in my career
What made you join the FinTech industry?
It’s a super innovative industry that defines the future of financial services, but also contributes to changing people everyday lives.
Tell us something people might not know about you.
I like outdoor sports a lot (skiing, snowboarding, climbing, alpinism, cycling, surfing, etc.).
What projects are you looking forward to working in Sheffield Haworth?
CEO searches for digital investing firms and crypto/digital assets players.
I love the work culture at SH and I am pleased to have such amazing and supportive managers, as well as great colleagues.
We placed the Head of Americas for Real Estate for ADIC (Abu Dhabi Investment Council).
We expanded the Blackstone relationship meaningfully, working this year with Blackstone proper as well as 3 of their real estate portfolio companies, including 2 CSuite positions, and executed within both the real estate and functions teams 4 clients for whom we have completed 3 or more searches this year (Cerberus, AEW, Breakthrough, Blackstone).
We’re pleased to say in the first full year of the ESG specific practice, from a standing start, we managed to place seven candidates and work on ten searches in total; the rest of which we expect to complete in early 2023 Roles have included ESG Sector Analysts across Industrials, Healthcare, TMT, Financials, and retail, as well as the newly created Climate Change Analysts and ESG quants
Part of the success in the searches has come from where we have been able to source candidates from: of the seven placed candidates, only one came from the same industry as the client.
Diversity has also been a success, with over 70% of the hires being women, and if we include broader diversity metrics all but one of the hires were diverse
Finally, we’re delighted to say that we’ve also had good success working with different parts of the business. ESG is still dominated by asset management but the practice has also successfully collaborated with the Energy & Sustainable Resources, Insurance and CTS practices for a number of searches and pitches Long may the collaboration continue
We launched the practice in Q3 2022 to create differentiated and value added solutions and thought leadership group to solve clients most challenging human capital issues
We created a cohesive strategic account management initiative with the SH Consulting Groups Winning Hedgepoint.
We continue to partner up with new clients:
-In the last 2 years, we have made placements with 18 different clients of which 12 are completely new to SH.
-In the last 2 years, we have made placements across 12 cities in the UK & Europe. We have been active in the UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and the Netherlands
Hiring Saskia, bringing German to the team (Germany is our second biggest hiring market at the moment, after the UK)
We not only place investment and asset management professionals but also last year we did a quirky / fun search; we worked for an American real estate investor called Jamestown and placed an F&B specialist for a historic building https://www ghg nl/ - the person is creating / developing a food court area in the building (similar to the Seven Dials market). We interviewed from Chefs to Hotel General Managers.

In 2022 we partnered with a range of FinTech clients and help them navigate many different challenges:
We started building the Board and Exco of a new investor-back digital bank in the UK including placing the ex-Monzo Chair
We worked with a FTSE 50 FinTech to restructure their product organization and were retained on three different Chief Product Officer mandates
We were retained by Klarna to help them understand how they structure their Global HR Leadership
We partnered with Citi in the exploration of how they approach Digital Assets across their global business
We’re bullish about 2023 as Philippe Raynier has joined to partner with Tom Arnall and Sam Keat, as the firm's global Fintech coverage ever expands. Philippe has joined us from UBS where he ran global digital strategy and FinTech business development, so we can truly offer clients a level of insight that our competitors can’t.
In 2022 we partnered with a range of FinTech clients and help them navigate many different challenges:

NeoBanks & Digital lending
This will be paired with a new marketing plan that we’re already executing. You can expect to see videos of interviews with Fintech CEO’s, members of the team sitting on panels at external events and podcasts, and of course an increasing amount of activity on LinkedIn and our social channels too. So please, like, comment, share, and add some rocket emojis.

Assets / Crypto Investing & Robo Adivsors & Embedded Finance2022 was quite the year for Change Consulting at the beginning of the year we set out to achieve three key objectives to lay down the foundations for success:
As we reflect on what we achieved we’re confident that everything accomplished has set us up to achieve our goals and ambitions to become a recognised and valued Management Consultancy in the industry and partner to our clients
A HIGH MARGIN BUSINESS
None of this would have been possible without the support of the wider business, thank you We’d like to highlight some individuals from Finance and Operations for their involvement in our business transformation, without whom we wouldn’t have accomplished what we did: Aled Evans, Erin Smith, Rona Sinclair, Steve Dania, Frances Wright, Maria Merkou, Imsal Shahid
A key highlight for us was hitting the £1 million mark in NFI for the first time since the acquisition A notable figure to add to this is our gross revenue of £5 7m, demonstrating the partnership commitment from our clients Our average margin has increased from 10% to 23% with net new business reaching margins of 30 – 60%.
Morgan Stanley continued to grow with Adriaan Hugo leading the way, we secured our place as an active supplier with Bank of America with the tireless effort of Grainne Costello and established a very strong pipeline of opportunities for Q1 & Q2
with our target clients, one of which is a brand new client AKDN that Shaun Warner introduced, MSA was signed the 2nd week of Jan as well as the first team deployed. We’ve had some great success in collaborating with the Insurance team, who have been fantastic at openly sharing their clients and thier key initiatives with Tim Baylis on the Change Consulting team, which has led to some very positive opportunity to be converted to revenue in Q1 this year Grainne Costello also passed leads to the Global Markets Team which are now active searches at final stage. There are many opportunities identified and too many to mention, 2023 has started off strong thanks to the hard work put in place in 2022
All of which would not be possible without the fantastic Change Consulting Operations Team, Chris Kapsalis Head of Delivery Management, Dan Jordan Head of Resourcing and David MacAskill Senior Commercial Contracts Management. Without them we wouldn’t be able to deliver to the solutions we commit to our clients. Our full deal value isn’t recognised until we’ve completed the project, without our operations team this would be unachievable Most importantly they allow our sales team to focus on selling and doing what they do best
As we look forward to 2023, we are excited about the opportunity. We have defined our Practice Areas to demonstrate to our clients that we are SME’s in:
We’ve established Partner Network to cover all our practice areas, bringing market leading thought leadership, advisory and SME capability, supported by our highly skilled consultant bench.
We also want to share this opportunity with the business, you too can earn £’s from introductions and passing information to us that could lead to revenue. For every piece of work won through a lead from the business you will get 25% of the total NFI allocated to your billings. To put that into context, if your lead transpired into a £500k programme you will get £125k on your billings Not bad for simply making an introduction right???
There are just 4 key questions that can be adapted and worked into the majority of your conversations with clients, the information you gather is all we need to convert into an opportunity:
What are your key Programmes?
What are the main challenges to deliver?
Who are the key stakeholders for those Programmes
Which consultancies do you currently engage with?
If you would like to know more, please reach out to Marie Cuffaro.
