Together 2022-2023 IMPACT REPORT

There are 4,000 children ages 0-5 in the Bachman Lake neighborhood. Each one is brimming with potential. Neighborhood parents, schools, nonprofits, volunteers, donors, community leaders – they all came together last year through Bachman Lake Together with a shared purpose: preparing Bachman Lake children for kindergarten. Early education is the foundation of future success in school and life. Another critical piece to helping children thrive is empowering their families to rise above challenges in Bachman Lake – poverty, crime and cultural barriers to inclusion.

In this report, we’ll share our shared progress on this work – not only by investing in the children themselves, but in the foundation of their families and community.

Investing in Bachman Lake Children At the heart of our mission is Bachman Lake children. To ensure more Bachman Lake children receive early education that prepares them for kindergarten, parent leaders and our staff partnered with Dallas ISD on a grassroots Pre-K registration campaign. Together, they registered children for almost all available Pre-K seats at neighborhood public schools.

Children who enter kindergarten ready to meet its academic, social and emotional demands are more likely to achieve later academic and life success.1

78% of Bachman Lake children who

attended Pre-K were ready for kindergarten, compared to 30% of their peers who did not.2

93.6% of Pre-K seats were registered for in neighborhood Dallas ISD schools for the 2022-23 school year.

300+ children participated in other

early education programs offered by our partners: Lumin Education, Catholic Charities Dallas and AVANCE North Texas.

Whenever we see a mom with a kid, we approach her and talk about why early education is important. It’s good when you have another parent’s perspective and you can learn from them.”

Building a Foundation for Success Creating opportunities for children in Bachman Lake starts with prioritizing their well-being and that of their family. We partner with local community organizations so our families have access to resources that support their physical and mental well-being.

151 counseling hours 52 developmental, hearing and autism screenings 11 mental health workshops by community partners helped equip families on topics, including school anxiety and transitions, self-esteem, stress management and healthy coping strategies

Like Bachman Lake Together, we want to promote the optimal development of every child. Family wellness is at the foundation of this, so this year we partnered on a family wellness fair to bring free hearing, autism and developmental screenings to families, as well as workshops on child development. The fair showed our UTD student volunteers firsthand what community engagement in the Latino community looks like. – Maria A. Helping Families Flourish At Bachman Lake Together, we believe the power to create bright futures for children belongs squarely in the hands of their families. That’s why parents are the most influential partners in our shared mission. Through parent leadership programming and opportunities, families in Bachman Lake are amplifying their voices and equipping themselves to advocate for their children. Plus, with new skills and experience as civically engaged leaders in their schools and community, Bachman Lake parents are tackling long entrenched neighborhood challenges, changing the system from the inside out.

26 parents completed our parent

leadership program, Community Action Network (CAN)

75% of parent leaders served in formal advisory roles with organizations like Dallas ISD, KERA, Lumin and National Center for Families Learning (NCFL)

23 families attended Parents and

Children Together events where parents learned how to support their children’s development and children participated in educational activities

Building Community In 2022, Bachman Lake Together partnered with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to create the region’s first community troop. Guided by trained Girl Scouts staff, Bachman Lake mothers served as troop leaders and completed curriculum designed for them while 12 of their children participated in challenging and engaging activities focused on STEM, entrepreneurship and life skills to earn Girl Scout badges.

From Hispanic Heritage Month to a cookie rally to first aid training to camp – they are getting a taste of Girl Scouts, all while preparing the girls for an amazing future of leadership. We are grateful to the families of Bachman Lake Together for helping us reimagine Girl Scouts for every girl in our community.”

– Jennifer Bartkowski, CEO, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas

The Power of Partnership As a collective impact organization, we convene community partners to help address the needs of Bachman Lake families. This allows us to focus on our families – building trust, hearing their triumphs and concerns, and putting their input at the center of our work. It also enables us to share this vital information with our partners so together we can make a greater impact in Bachman Lake.

Boosting Early Development Too often, isolation, language and cultural barriers prevent Bachman Lake families from knowing how to support their children’s early development. To combat this, we launched our Prenatal to Three pilot project to furnish medical providers with culturally responsive messaging, interventions and resources designed to effectively engage Bachman Lake families in discussions about how to support their children’s early development at home. Together, BLT staff, parent leaders and volunteers prepared kits of developmentally appropriate toys, books and resource packets to equip local medical clinics for these conversations.
