From Diane’s Desk...

HELLO AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The early morning frost highlights lacy spider webs and silvery blades of grass, reminding me to take stock of the changing of the season. This is a quieter, more reflective time of year, and I treasure these moments when the pace of life seems to slow a bit, rather than feel the potential stress of the season.

The moments we treasure the most are with each other and our family and friends. This Shawnee Life community also brings great joy to my work and personal life in a different way than I have ever experienced before.

Recently, Nick (aka Bringer of Libations and Cheer) and I have begun to research ways to enhance the connection within our Shawnee Life community. We dream of building a platform tailored for Shawnee Life that combines many of the apps that we all use and appreciate: Facebook, Next Door, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc… Not only would this allow us to increase awareness about all that is available and happening around our area, but it would contain our social, business and personal needs all in one place. Happy Holidays from the Duff family! Meet Scott, Ashley, Kaya, Kaiden, Easton, and Ellie of Juniper Avenue in Amanda Lakes. Scott and Ashley have been Shawnee residents most of their lives, meeting in elementary school when Elmwood and Maplewood combined, becoming good friends in middle school and remaining so all the way through high school. Upon graduation, Scott went to Arizona State University and lived in the Grand Canyon State until 2014, when he came back home to help with his family’s business, Duffy’s Cleaners. Ashley remained in Lima after graduation and became a chiropractic massage therapist, running the Dayton School of Medical Massage Clinic before coming back to Lima and working for Lima Memorial Hospital in the radiology department. Ashley has two older children, Kaya and Kaiden. Scott and Ashley welcomed their oldest, Easton, in 2015, and their youngest child, Ellie, in 2016. Kaya is an esthetician and has her own business, Boughan’s Beauty Bar. While in high school she was a cheerleader for both basketball and football. Kaiden is a junior at Shawnee and is involved in choir and several of the high school and local musical productions. This month he will play Bob in Shawnee’s musical, White Christmas. Easton is a first grader at Elmwood. He enjoys soccer, flag football, t-ball, and going 8 • DECEMBER 2022

to school. Ellie is in kindergarten at Elmwood and she is involved in gymnastics, soccer, flag football, t-ball, and cheerleading. She loves kindergarten…especially the field trips!

The Duff family built and moved into their Amanda Lakes home in July 2021. They enjoy living in their neighborhood. Their neighbors actually told Scott and Ashley about the lot beside them, which is where they built their forever home! “We love that the kids have children to play with. We love walking around the neighborhood while the kids ride their bikes and the people are so friendly!” stated Ashley.

With the Christmas season upon us, the Duffs have several yearly traditions. Adorning their home with lights from Light up Lima has become an annual event that helps them usher in the beauty of the holiday season.

Scott and Ashley also love Christmas puzzles. The day after Thanksgiving they have a puzzle on their island and complete several more

throughout the month. Ashley and the kids enjoy baking together. She used to make chocolate bombs for the kids to have on Christmas Eve, and now they make the chocolate bombs together, passing them out to family and friends as gifts. Ellie also enjoys helping her mom make cheesecakes to take to holiday events. A family cookie baking day is always on the calendar! Kids and family members come over to decorate cookies for Santa.

Scott, Ashley, and the kids enjoy sitting down to watch Christmas movies. Their go-to’s include: A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Christmas Story, White Christmas, and everyone’s favorite, Home Alone. As a family, the Duffs enjoy going to Shawnee Luminary night to look at the lights all around our community. They also attend the Holiday Spectacular at the Civic Center, stopping by the Allen County Museum after the show to see the various community trees, talk to the Talking Tree, and get an ornament made to hang on their own Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve they read Twas the Night Before Christmas, then wake up on Christmas morning to a large breakfast, followed by beef tenderloin for dinner.

The Duffs had an eventful 2022 with several vacations, the kids’ first Reds baseball game and their first drive-in movie! They are full of hope for a peaceful, healthy, and joyous holiday season and 2023!

We desire to become one of many regional community resources that encourages local talent and gifts an expansive vision through collaborative works to push culture and commUNITY development. Located at the southeast corner of Lima’s urban core, The Central District stretches along South-Avenue from East Spring Street to East Elm Street. What was once a bustling collection of industrial buildings, crane yards and railroad loading points has been completely reconstructed into a modern blend of repurposed historic buildings and outdoor urban leisure space. A greenway pedestrian path, dog park and an enclosed courtyard have been designed into the voids between the industrial buildings for the residents, tenants and visitors to enjoy. This space offers individuals an enlightening walkable experience along with convenient parking, charging stations and curbside pick up.

Downtown Development

by Steve Walter, Trisco Systems The Metro Center of Lima is an adaptive re-use and re-purposing of the old Metropolitan Bank building in downtown Lima. The project consisted of creating upscale loft-style apartments on floors two through five, as well as business arcade style commercial spaces on the first floor.

These 33 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are truly unlike any other in the area or our region of Ohio. They rival upscale apartments in cities like Chicago, Cincinnati, and Columbus. The apartments are designed with an “industrial” feel complete with brick and stucco walls, open concrete ceilings, and beautiful original terrazzo floors. All apartments are appointed with unique light fixtures, high-end stainless-steel appliances, washers and dryers, and each unit has either a fully usable balcony or private patio.

The building offers amazing amenities, such as a community room with three flat screen TVs, an outdoor community rooftop patio that makes you feel like you are in a large city, large exercise facility with Peloton equipment, private off-street parking, and private storage units. It is probably one of the most secure buildings with multiple high-end security cameras, video entry controllers and Bluetooth door locks. Our tenants have told us that the “feel” of the building has a sense of community in that everyone knows their neighbor and really enjoys living in such a unique building.

The business arcade is designed to hold a variety of tenants that will support each other as well as the neighborhood. These spaces also have that large downtown city feel with high ceilings, glass storefronts both inside and outside of the space, and there are even two spaces that have a historical bank vault. The goal is that the tenants in these commercial spaces will support each other as well as the thirty-three apartments and downtown Lima.

The next time you have a chance, take a ride to downtown Lima, and look around at what is happening. Downtown Lima is alive and well and it is making a comeback. Projects such as the new outdoor amphitheater, the rejuvenation of the buildings at Spring and Main, the Central District project, the Ohio Theatre renovation, and new restaurants are profoundly changing our downtown. The Metro Center of Lima project is enhanced by these other projects, and we feel that it is a key component to the re-birth of our downtown.

Our tenants have told us that they are excited to see what is happening around them and it has created kind of a buzz or a vibe that is drawing people back to downtown. The Mercy Health Women’s Wellness and Wine series aims to shine a light on all aspects of women’s health in a fun, supportive atmosphere that encourages open and honest dialogue. The series began in early 2022, after several focus groups of women from around the Greater Lima Region indicated they wanted more access to health information. So often they felt that when they searched ‘Women’s Health’ on-line, all of the information was about having babies and getting mammograms… and they wanted more!

On October 22, Mercy Health featured a distinguished panel comprising Dr. Vanessa Stallkamp, OBGYN; Dr. Sheena Patel, Gastroenterology; Amy Edwards, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy; and Cheryl Kern Buell, PA Urology. The group of 90 women gathered at ArtSpace in Lima to discuss topics like urinary tract infections, hemorrhoids, menopause, pelvic pain, incontinence and 20 • DECEMBER 2022

much more…not your typical wine night conversations!

All the ‘below the belt’ topics were covered…and there were a lot of laughs along the way! Women supporting other women—that always makes for a fun night.

Future events will be held several times each year and will feature expert panelists discussing all of the health topics that women want to hear about! The locations will vary event to event. There is no cost to attend, but an RSVP is requested as the spaces fill quickly! The next Women’s Wellness & Wine Event will be in February, so stay tuned!

Meet Healthcare Hero:

Meet Dr. Jason Bowersock, MD, a General Surgeon with the Weight Management Program at Mercy St. Rita’s. Dr. Bowersock specializes in robotics, bariatrics, and trauma.

With a team of experienced professionals, the Weight Management Program uses a whole team approach to promote whole personal healing. Their team includes surgeons, physicians, a physician assistant, nurses, dietitians, a psychologist, and an exercise physiologist. Jason uses his multiple areas of expertise to assist every individual with their weight management goals. “Seeing the life changes people can make is my favorite thing about my job. My patient’s lives are completely different, they are medically better off, and live longer.”

Jason grew up on a farm in Spencerville. He originally planned on moving away to a larger city and, after graduating high school, went to play baseball at Kennesaw State University outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

He eventually found himself returning to Ohio and his friends at the University of Cincinnati and graduating with his Bachelor of Science. He then attended Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine for medical school and went on to complete his residency at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He considered going into family medicine but discovered surgery allowed him to be hands-on and fix/help people. He then saw the need for bariatric surgery and a weight management program in Lima, Ohio. Dr. Bowersock graduated from his residency in June of 2010 and started working at St. Rita’s immediately after in July.

During medical school, Jason also met his future wife, Stephanie. She was an RN taking care of his grandmother with Alzheimer’s. They married in Florida at Disneyworld and moved back to Jason’s hometown to escape the hassle of city life, and on to a farm. Together they have three children: Kalob, Delanie, and Cooper.

Kalob lives in Spencerville and works at Honda. Their daughter, Delanie, enjoys agriculture and shows pigs at the fair. She also plays basketball and just earned her license. Their youngest, Cooper, plays soccer in Spencerville and helps out on the farm. On their family farm you can find donkeys, elk, buffalo, Scottish Highland cows, chickens, and pigs. As a family they enjoy traveling, especially to cities within driving distance such as Chicago or Cleveland to watch baseball. This past summer they had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Dr. Bowersock has a jam-packed schedule at the Weight Management Program. His days rotate between bariatric surgery, general surgery (colon cancer and hernias), office hours, and being on-call. His biggest challenge in the office is long-term follow up. “To stay successful, you must continue to monitor vitamins, electrolytes, and any deficiencies. Bariatric surgery is not the easy way out but is the most likely way to lose the highest amount of weight.” Patients must remember weight management is a process and will not happen overnight. Luckily, Dr. Bowersock and members of the Weight Management Program are there to help their patients reach their goals, big or small.

When asked if he had any tips for creating resolutions for the new year, Dr. Bowersock said, “Start with something small and feasible. For example, stop drinking pop. If you do break your resolution, don’t stop!

It’s okay not to be perfect with nutrition.” In the new year, he is looking forward to working a little less and enjoying family more!

A closer look at the family behind the business: Jason graduated from UNOH with an HVAC degree.

Living in the same area that he serves is a rewarding feeling for this proud local business owner. He particularly enjoys seeing his friends, family and customers when he is out at various social events. When asked what his favorite thing about being a business owner in Lima was, he replied with, “Living and running a business in a small town allows us to get to know and build relationships with our customers.”

Jason’s wife, Stacey, graduated from Elida High School and then completed a nursing degree at Ohio State University. She has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 25 years and currently works for Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

Jason and Stacey first met in Lima and have been married for 20 years. They believe it is important for their kids to uphold a strong work ethic in order to be successful in life. Their children are continuing the family tradition of attending Shawnee Schools, just like Jason and his parents.

Their oldest daughter, Lily (18), is a very driven, bright and kind young woman who is currently attending Ohio State

University in Columbus as a pre-med and biological science student. She loves going to the Ohio State football games. She is continuing her love of running but now gets to race around campus. Twins, Chloe and Carter (17), attend Shawnee High School and are very active in all kinds of activities. Chloe is a member of student government and loves to read books. She plays soccer for Shawnee High School and for GTFC Soccer Club during the winter and spring. She is driven to excel in sports and has a very fun-loving personality. Chloe attends a College Credit Plus class at “The Branch” at OSU’s campus here in Lima. Spending time with family and friends is also something she truly enjoys. Carter is involved with cross country and track, as well as swimming and bowling. His old soul is definitely that of a teacher and he is a very fun, energetic young man that is easy to talk to.

The family loves the outdoors so their vacations usually involve camping, the beach or water and snow skiing. Their favorite vacation is always visiting family in Hawaii. Jason and his son Carter enjoy motorcycle riding when they can find a little time inbetween so many other activities. This seems fitting because they also like to ride snowmobiles, four-wheelers and dirt bikes! Jason likes to golf and spend time with his kids.

The Cleaves family is looking forward to Christmas and simply spending time together as a family. American Heating and Air hosts their annual Christmas party at the bowling alley at Westgate Entertainment Center, which is a holiday tradition everyone enjoys.

Looking ahead to 2023, American Heating & Air Conditioning is excited to announce that they have purchased a new building at 1010 East High Street, that they will be moving into because they have outgrown their current location. The new location will be perfect because it has plenty of room to grow.

Kala, who works in supply chain management at the refinery, says the time volunteering requires is worth it.

From watching the kids’ faces light up as they are handed a uniform to wear for the season, to hearing their shrieks of joy when they’re told they are getting lights for the field so they can play a night game, it’s things like this that make every second of volunteering completely worth it,” said Kala.

Kala’s husband, Brandon, also works at the refinery as a process control engineer. Brandon champions the refinery’s involvement with the Lima Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts to children in need. It’s one of many volunteer efforts at the refinery, which also supports Lima City Schools’ Back to School event, United Way of Greater Lima’s Day of Caring, Equestrian Therapy Program’s Ride-A-Thon, Safety City’s Trick or Treat and Children’s Developmental Center’s annual holiday party, just to name a few.

Magical, Medical Piggies

by Georgie Damschroder excited squeaks and lots of love! They have also taught themselves to give loud chirps to let their people know when they need food or water.

While the idea of having tiny critters named after notoriously messy barn animals may sound daunting to some, the Gladens assure that it’s not as hard as it seems.

“They’re pretty easy, like a cat. As long as they have food and water they are good!” says Leslie Gladen.

We all know that being around animals improves your mood; how could it not? A snuggle with a feline or a game of fetch with a fido is sure to spin any bad day into a good one. But although your pet can help with mental health, can they really heal you physically? An ancient Native American tribe called the Incas certainly thought so when they “discovered” that guinea pigs may be able to help out their doctors. Being very spiritually driven, the Incas believed that guinea pigs were gods, and began to use their supposed holy powers within their tribe. A common healing ritual would be to rub down one’s entire body with a guinea pig! When the critter made a squeaking noise, the part of the body it was on at the time was thought to be injured. Other methods like this became so popular that Inca doctors, known as Curanderos, always carried the piggies around with them. It was also said that the particularly holy and rare black guinea pig could sense and clear away bad energy, so perhaps even the most ancient of people knew how happy a tiny, furry pig can make you!

Two of these mystical piggies live in Amanda Lakes neighborhood with the Gladen family! Two-year-old Snickers was brought by Santa as a Christmas present, but after she became a bit lonely, the family brought home one-year-old Oryo to keep her company. The two pigs belong to daughter Kyla Gladen, who showers them with love and was even able to teach them tricks!

For example, Oryo is practically a professional at playing dead. Unfortunately, Kyla and her siblings need to attend Shawnee Schools, and the rest of the family can’t be home all the time, so when they finally return after a day out, the guinea pigs are quick to welcome them with 28 • DECEMBER 2022

While Snickers and Oryo love snuggling and playing in their tank, when the weather’s just right, the family takes them outside. The piggies love to frolic around with one another while nibbling on grass and just about anything edible they can find! Playing is a necessity, so be it outside in the grass, inside, with the family or with each other, Snickers and Oryo will find a way to make any time into play time! Though the guinea pigs may not be able to cure any disease, they make up for it ten-fold with their constant love and adorable faces! Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost Starting your own business can be like having a baby — a very important life decision that might not always be a rational one.

Nine months into your 9-5 insipid job and you might decide to take the proverbial exit from the freeway, onto the smaller more challenging road less travelled.

But it’s not always smooth sailing. Akin to raising a baby, your business is bound to give you many sleepless nights, demanding all your attention and testing your resolve at every stage.

Persevere, and you shall be rewarded.

While watching your business take its first steps towards success will fill your heart with joy, there are a few steps you must take in order to witness this. Here are a few healthy business practices every small business owner must practice — 1. Assess your product — as a businessperson, one must always strive to deliver products/services of the highest quality.

You need to ask yourself several questions before starting your business — will my product fulfill consumers’ needs? Is there a market for the product/service I’m delivering? Is the pricing right? A thorough SWOT analysis of your product will shed light upon different aspects of your product, and will help you identify key strengths and weaknesses, and how they can be overcome.

2. Gauge the market and your competitors — the business environment can be like a war zone, you often don’t have complete control, and your fate depends on the exterior environment, your enemies, and your comrades. There can be landmines everywhere, so one must tread with utmost caution, or result going kaput. It is thus imperative for a businessperson to have adequate knowledge about the market their product/ service exists in and the competitors in that market. This knowledge is indispensable for a businessperson. It serves as a crucial decision-making factor in charting the growth route of a business. The product/service should be strong enough to be able to withstand blitzkrieg marketing campaigns by competitors.

3. Evaluate yourself — a successful small business owner always monitors the value of the business. The value of a business plays a fundamental role in making future business decisions and financial planning, especially when matters such as the sale of your business or an insurance evaluation are at hand.

Typically, you should give about 12 months before starting to see a customer bring more value to your business than how much it cost you on-board that one customer. It’s essential to take as much as you can handle, and no more. If not, you might end up compromising on the quality of your product/service, and this can have a detrimental effect on the credibility of your business.

While starting a business is a path several people have chosen to tread in recent times, sustaining it and maintaining its viability are the biggest hurdles.

The aforementioned business practices will help you take obstacles head on, and ensure a first place finish in this ultramarathon.

Submitted by Quinn Whittaker of Fairway Drive The decision to move is never easy, but for our family the timing felt perfect. Though it was our first home as a married couple, and we began raising all three of our children there, we knew it would be bittersweet to leave the only home we had ever known as a family. Because both Joe and I were born and raised in Lima we knew exactly to what area we wanted to move. Wanting to be closer to the golf course and our friends, family and school, we began our search in the Shawnee area.

After viewing many houses that were not what we wanted, a home on Fairway Drive became available, privately, and we were given the opportunity to see it. As soon as I walked in, I thought to myself “no way” and honestly, I did not even care to view the entire house. Built in 1960 with very few updates, I thought it was an impossible task and I could never envision it becoming our home. With yellow, pink, and purple carpeting throughout the house as well as matching colorful fixtures, one can only imagine what we were up against. However, there was something about the house we kept coming back to…a feeling like this was where we were meant to be.

Very soon, our vision was instantly coming to fruition: walls were gone, the carpets were gone, the matching fixtures were gone and our newer, modern ideas were added. The remodel, as most do, took longer than expected but we banned together as a family and supported each other, even when times were often very stressful. By mid-February we saw the light at the end of the tunnel and finishing touches were being added.

There were more decisions than one could have ever imagined, but at the end of the day it was exactly what we wanted and feels just like home.

After meeting with several contractors, we decided that it was possible to turn the house into our dream home, thanks to Jeremy Roberts from Gehring and Burtchin. He was very knowledgeable, extremely helpful in helping me create my vision, and communicated well with us about product and budgetary concerns. From the time of possession, they started about three weeks later and had the entire project completed in a little over six months. This also included a complete revamping and upgrade of the electrical throughout the entire house; basically everything needed updating!

We decided to take out the main wall of the house and create an open concept for the main living space and kitchen area as well as completely gut and remodel the bathrooms; due to budgetary concerns, we thought the basement would have to wait. Construction began in September of 2021. However, within one week of taking possession, we received heavy rains, and this old house simply could not handle it. The basement had completely flooded and we had 4-5 inches of standing water. There were many times we wondered whether we had made the right decision, but things happen for a reason and, luckily, thanks to insurance, we were now able to remodel the basement as well (flash forward one year, as I am writing this piece; the basement has been imperative for the children to have another space to play!).

The transformation was complete; we had a new kitchen, new bathrooms, a new basement, fresh paint, baseboards, etc. all with a modern vibe that fit our taste. We were also able to keep a few of the original parts of the house which, to us, added character: the main entryway partition, original slate and hardwood flooring and the kitchen cabinets, to name a few.

Actually, Maeggan Walter, a friend of ours painted the original kitchen cabinets which were in pristine condition. Multiple people told us, it could not be done, going from dark to white or it wouldn’t look good or last...well she did it and they look fantastic! When it was all said and done, we had transformed an amazing house with good bones into a modern looking floor plan and décor.

Joe and I both attended St. Charles and Lima Central Catholic (’99 and ’97) and our families have known each other for years (He and my younger brother were college roommates and his cousin is my childhood best friend…small world!); though it would be ten years before we started dating and were married (2007). Joe graduated from the University of Dayton with a business degree and is the VP of Mid-American Cleaning Contractors. I graduated from Baylor University with a BA in Latin and currently am in my 20th year in Latin education at Elida High School. When Joe proposed, we “fought” over where we would live, as I was teaching in Columbus and he was in Lima. There was no way I was moving back to Lima… well here we are and it was the best decision ever as we are currently raising our kids in the same town as both sets of grandparents and their cousins.

started Kindergarten this year. All three children go to St. Charles and this is the one and only year they will all be in the same building. As a family, we enjoy movie and game nights, golfing, swimming, and visiting the grandparents in Florida! We are very excited to continue building memories in our new home!

In 2009, we welcomed Lily (13). She was the first grandchild on both sides and is loved beyond measure. Now she is a typical teenager and enjoys playing volleyball, swimming, and competition dance. Joseph Jr. (10) aka “Jack” came along in 2011, and he loves playing baseball, basketball, and of course the dreaded video games! In 2017, while working on my Master’s in School Counseling at BGSU, we found out I was pregnant again and welcomed Charlie (5). He completed our family and enjoys swimming and bothering his siblings, and just

My favorite space is the kitchen. With its open floorplan and modern look, it is the perfect place to cook, enjoy family dinners, play games, host friends, and even complete homework. I am at my happiest and most peaceful when I am sitting around the beautiful island with my family.

Introducing Maplewood’s New Principal, Michele Roberts

Mrs. DePalma’s 3rd grade class took the time to interview the new principal of Maplewood, Mrs. Roberts, in order to get to know her a little better! We hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as we did!

Where did you work before coming to Maplewood?

I have had many jobs. I was even once a wildland firefighter in Washington State. I taught 5th, 6th. 7th, and 8th grade reading/language arts . Most recently I was the assistant principal at Napoleon Jr./Sr High School.

Where did you go to school in 3rd and 4th grade?

I grew up in Bakersfield. California. I went to Pioneer Drive Elementary. My third grade teacher was Mrs. Baker and my 4th grade teacher was Mrs. Geddes. I remember that I loved playing on the bars and writing stories with my friends.

Why did you want a job at Maplewood?

I had heard so many great things about the school and the Shawnee district. I heard the staff, students, and families here were terrific and now that I have been here for a bit, I agree!

Tell us about your family…

I have been married for 12 years and we have three children. I have a junior in highschool named Brent and 2nd grade twin boys named James and Owen. We have two dogs-Biscuit and Nutter Butter. We also have two cats-Kitness and Mini Kitty.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to travel and stay in hotels. I love going to festivals and hanging out with my family. I like to read and write and learn new things. Right now I am learning Spanish.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I am a very good roller skater. I once tried out for the Glass City Roller Derby team and made it!

Do you live in Lima?

No, I live in the country in Henry County.

What is something that you are proud of?

I am very proud of my children. They are kind and generous people. I am also proud of myself for working hard and becoming a principal.

What are some of your favorite things?

I love unique animals, like the Komodo Dragon and Axolotl. I gave up soda and now I love Gatorade Zero.

I love visiting Portland, Oregon where I lived for a long time. I love going to most restaurants!

What is your favorite thing about working at Maplewood so far?

So far I love the people! The students, staff, and families have been very welcoming and third and fourth graders are so much fun!

What is the most difficult part of your job?

The most difficult part of my job is making sure that everyone at school is getting what they need to learn and teach and feel great about being at school! But that is also the most important part of my job as well.

Who was one of your favorite teachers and why?

Mrs. Hess, my 7th grade language arts teacher, was my favorite. I loved her class because we did fun projects like a radio play and a stage play. I remember learning about Helen Keller and how to take notes.

What have you noticed about the staff at Maplewood?

The staff and students have a culture of excellence where trying your best is expected and celebrated. I have also noticed that the people in this school are very kind.

Do you have homework?

I do have some homework. I also make sure to spend time with my family to “recharge.”

What is your goal for Maplewood?

My goal is that every person in the building will grow professionally and academically.

If you had to tell a student three things to be successful in school, what would it be?

1. Find the things you love to do and practice, practice, practice.

2. You will often get out of school (and life) what you put in - work hard and be positive.

3. Don’t be afraid to try new things don’t be afraid to make mistakes - that’s how we learn.

In August of this year, we traveled to one of our favorite places, Sedona, Arizona! The vistas are both mesmerizing and calming at the same time.

We were fortunate to come across a beautiful home with a pool and Thunder Mountain in the backyard, almost close enough to reach out and touch!

While I was soaking up some rays and the gorgeous view, Dennis (after a four-year hiatus) was hiking on a dusty red trail again, one of his favorite things to do.

Since we enjoy dining alfresco when we can, we highly suggest The Hideaway House or The Hudson for both great food and amazing views.

Whenever we get to Sedona a highlight for us is to visit The Chapel at the Holy Cross to feel the peacefulness and pray and meditate on life.

We came home rejuvenated and blessed!

How do you detect where a leak in a basement is coming from?

If you have a leak in your basement the obvious answer is that there is a hole somewhere letting that water in. The most common problem we see is cove seepage. When the foundation is built it consists of 3 different pieces of concrete: the footer, wall and floor. Where they come together is called the cove. When concrete dries it shrinks and because of this there is a small gap where the floor and wall come together that can allow water penetration. Although this is the most common leak it is not the only one and a thorough inspection can show other places.

BBQ Jalapeno Poppers From the kitchen of Sara Anderson of Sara’s Sweets BBQ Bacon Jalapeno Poppers Yields: 36 appetizers Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 60 minutes Total Time: 80 minutes •

18 jalapeno peppers

•

8-oz package cream cheese, softened

•

3/4 cup freshly grated cheddar cheese

•

3 green onions, chopped

•

1 package bacon

•

3/4 cup barbecue sauce

•

36 toothpicks

Preheat oven to 300*F. Cut jalapenos in half, and scoop out seeds and membrane, and discard, leaving only the jalapeno shell. Lay out jalapenos on a baking sheet. (You should have 36 total.)

No holiday party or gathering is complete without a smorgasbord of tasty appetizers & snacks. While you can’t go wrong with a classic cheeseball or charcuterie tray, BBQ Bacon Jalapeno Poppers are sure to be a hit with your family & friends.

While she is typically known to bring cookies or cupcakes to the holiday get together, Sara Anderson shares her favorite appetizer recipe. Spicy jalapeno peppers are stuffed with a creamy cheese mixture, wrapped with bacon, brushed with BBQ sauce, and baked to sizzling perfection.

Sara Anderson owns & operates Sara’s Sweets, a local hometown bakery with all sorts of holiday treats this time of year. In her free time, she enjoys long-distance running, cooking “for fun” & reading. Her husband Ben Anderson is the administrative pastor at Lima Baptist Temple. They have three children: James (age 8), Theo (age 4) and Eleanor (age 1) who attend Temple Christian School. They enjoy spending time together as a family whenever they can.

In a small bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, and chopped green onions. Evenly spread the cheese mixture into each jalapeno shell.

Cut bacon slices in half, and wrap each half around one jalapeno. Secure with a toothpick. Repeat with remaining bacon and jalapenos. Brush evenly with barbecue sauce.

Bake in oven at 300*F for 50-60 minutes until bacon is done. Serve warm or at room temperature.
