Summer is right around the corner so let the fun begin! I am ready for sunshine, vacation, lazy days by the pool, spontaneous road trips, and drinks on the patio. I am also ready to celebrate my amazing husband and fantastic father-inlaw on Father’s Day! Words can’t begin to express how grateful I am to have them in my life.

I am also happy to report that the magazine is receiving more and more positive feedback and support. Our Shawnee Life Magazine tribe is an absolutely integral part to creating “The Story of Us.” Furthermore, our sponsors are learning to take full advantage of the magazine as a unique advertising vehicle for their business as they share more about who they are, what they do, and what they offer in various articles. Meet the Medina/Nunnery Family

Bubba Nunnery and Rhonda Medina have lived on Mills Road for the past twelve years. With Rhonda relocating to Lima from Detroit and Bubba from Los Angeles, the idea of open space was somewhat of a foreign concept to them. Years later, they have fallen in love with country living. They describe living on Mills Road “like having our own nature preserve.” When they are home, they fish, hunt, have campfires, cook outside, take nature walks and feel like they are a million miles from civilization. They also enjoy that they have fantastic neighbors up and down the road.

Dr. Rhonda Jean Medina, MD, is a board-certified obstetriciangynecologist with over 25 years of experience, serving patients in Lima, Ohio, and the surrounding region. She is affiliated with Lima Memorial Health System and practices at Lima LMH OB-GYN. Medina earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Providence Hospital in Detroit. She holds active medical licenses in Ohio and previously in Michigan. She is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Bubba Scott Nunnery is the Vice President of Government & Regulatory Affairs at ZoomInfo, a publicly traded business intelligence company. In this role, he oversees legislative and regulatory activity at the state, federal and international levels and engages with lawmakers on emerging technology issues

such as data privacy and artificial intelligence. Prior to that, Bubba was the National Political Director for America Votes. He holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Criminal Justice from the University of Northern Colorado.

Rhonda and Bubba are both Lima transplants. They met on a whim in Los Angeles in 1996 - Rhonda’s 25th birthday to be exact. Bubba lived in southern California & Rhonda - a Michigan native - was there for a one month radiology rotation during medical school. They kept in semi-regular contact and finally began dating in 2001 - exactly 5 years from the day they met. After her residency, Rhonda was recruited to Lima and in 2003 she convinced Bubba to relocate to Lima - for two years. They married in June 2004 and had their first daughter, Avalena (Ava) in 2005 and second daughter Lilyana (Lily) in 2007. Two years “quickly” turned into 22 years and they’ve lived here happily ever since.

Both daughters attended Shawnee schools. Ava graduated in 2024 and just completed her freshman year at the University of Alabama. Lily will graduate this year and will be joining her sister in Tuscaloosa in the fall. Roll Tide!

This crew loves their rescue dogs and have had several over the years. Currently they have Dixie, a white lab mix and Ginger, her younger, vivacious sister who appears to be a hound mix of some sort. Both are 100% spoiled.

When asked what they enjoy doing together as a family the answer is simple: eating and traveling - especially if they happen at the same time. They like a wide variety of food and experiences, which makes choosing a “favorite” difficult. Bubba does 99% of all the shopping and cooking in the house, which isn’t to say Rhonda isn’t a good cook - she is! “The Nunnery kitchen is a laboratory and we experiment with new and exotic menus all the time,” said Bubba. As far as traveling is concerned Bubba added, “Our family is a tight unit and we like to go go go, but you’re not likely to find us hiking base camp at Everest or running the Boston Marathon. Rather, keep your eyes peeled wherever there is sun, sand and water and you’ll probably find us shucking oysters and gorging on seafood and sunburns.” The family loves to vacation in the Great Exuma! It has the bluest water on earth and they enjoy experiencing all the adventures…boating, diving, fishing, and swimming with the pigs.

Individually, Rhonda is an avid scrapbooker and spends countless hours documenting the family adventures. Bubba loves to hunt, fish, drink bourbon, and play guitar. You can even find him playing around town once in a while. As far as sports are concerned, you won’t find Ohio State fans in this household…it’s all about University of Alabama here. ROLL TIDE!

Bubba and Rhonda’s family spends a lot of time outside in the summer and they always try to do a hog roast or a fish fry (or both). On the Fourth of July, the fireworks show at their house is said to “rival an outdoor Kiss concert during the band’s peak in the 80’s.” Speaking of heavy metal music, Bubba claims that he can beat ANYONE in 80’s hair band trivia.

It is safe to say that the Medina/Nunnery house out on Mills Road is a happening place with lots of fun.

Finding Your

Mind the Gap:

Freedom

in the Space Between Reaction

What if the best advice anyone could give you is to simply do…nothing! I mean we are always taught and told to do something, right? But why? Who or what is it for, why do we always have to give something to everyone and everything all the time? It even sounds exhausting asking the question itself. We live in a world that feels like a relentless current, constantly pulling us into immediate responses. Our devices ping with demands, social media feeds ignite our opinions, and even everyday interactions can feel like a series of triggers demanding an instant reaction. We’re seemingly conditioned to respond without pause, to offer our take on every notification, every slight, every perceived injustice. Whether it’s a fiery debate online, a demanding boss, or a child’s unexpected meltdown, the pressure to do something, to say something, feels almost automatic.

Adding to this constant state of alert is the pervasive societal narrative that equates success with external achievements. We’re often led to believe that wealth, status, and recognition are the ultimate measures of worth. Yet, if we take a moment for honest reflection, we recognize that these external markers often leave a void where genuine contentment should be. No amount of money can buy inner peace, and no amount of accolades can replace authentic connection. When we prioritize these

external pursuits, we risk losing touch with our inner selves, becoming reactive beings driven by external validation rather than our own values.

What truly defines our experience of the world, what colors our interactions and shapes our unique identities, is our emotions. They are a powerful and personal form of currency, entirely ours to manage. Yet, how often do we spend them impulsively, reacting without conscious thought, only to find ourselves emotionally depleted, short-tempered with loved ones, or regretting words spoken in haste?

But what if we consciously chose a different path? What if, instead of reflexively reacting to that frustrating email, that challenging situation with a family member, or that irritating comment from a stranger, our first instinct became to simply… pause? Just a breath. A moment of stillness before we unleash our emotional response. This isn’t about avoiding difficult situations or suppressing our feelings. It’s about consciously choosing how we invest our precious emotional energy.

In 1968 the London Underground coined the phrase, “Mind the Gap.” You hear it in train and subway stations across the globe now, a practical reminder to pay attention to the space between the train and the platform. It’s a crucial warning, highlighting a potentially hazardous zone where a moment of inattention can lead to a misstep and even injury.

Now, consider applying this same principle to the landscape of your daily life. “Mind the gap” between an external trigger – a comment, an event, a demand – and your internal response. Cultivate a deliberate pause. In that small space, you gain the power to observe your own rising emotions, your

immediate impulses, and to ask yourself: is this reaction truly serving me? Is this situation worth the expenditure of my valuable emotional currency? Will an immediate, emotionally charged response lead to a better outcome, or will it likely leave me feeling more drained and the situation potentially worse?

This deliberate pause is beautifully articulated in the words of Viktor Frankl: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” This “space” is precisely the gap we need to mind. It is the moment where we move from being a mere reactor to becoming a conscious agent in our own lives.

Take back your control. Empower yourself to choose when and how you engage, reserving your emotional energy for the people and situations that truly align with your values and contribute to your well-being.

So, the next time you feel that familiar urge to react surging within you – whether it’s to a demanding email, a frustrating encounter, or a provocative post online – try it. Just pause. Take a breath. Do nothing for a moment. Notice the impulse to respond, but resist it. In that small space of stillness, you reclaim your power. You get to decide whether to blindly step into that emotional gap or to mind it wisely, consciously choosing a response that reflects your values and protects your precious emotional resources. It’s a simple yet transformative practice that can bring a profound sense of calm, clarity, and ultimately, freedom to the often-turbulent waters of our everyday lives.

Until our next encounter, remember:

The most important step is simply the next and that the greatest magic one can experience is simply believing.

LIMA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Connecting donors who care with causes that matter!

For residents of Lima and the surrounding Allen County region, one of our true hidden treasures is the Lima Community Foundation (LCF). Celebrating 60 incredible years of community service since its founding in 1965, LCF has grown from a modest idea dreamed up by fifteen dedicated citizens into a cornerstone of local support. Inspired by giants like the Rockefeller, Ford, and Cleveland Foundations, those community pioneers envisioned a nonprofit organization that would empower every resident to make a lasting difference.

Did you know that Lima has a community foundation?

So, what exactly is a community foundation, and how does it work? In essence, a community foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that builds permanent funds for the public good. Think of it as planting a garden: donations are like seeds, carefully planted and nurtured over time. With wise investment strategies, these funds grow and yield returns—through interest, dividends, and capital gains—that can be used to support local charities, community projects, and educational scholarships year after year. The remarkable feature of a community foundation is that it’s designed to last forever; donations made today can create benefits that ripple through our community for decades into the future.

A key driver behind this enduring impact is the concept of an endowment. Endowments are large funds donated to LCF, which are then managed by professional investors who adhere to our conservative investment strategy. The goal is twofold: to generate yearly income that funds current community needs and to allow the overall value of the endowment to

grow over time. This continuous growth means that the impact of your donation doesn’t just vanish—it multiplies, ensuring that critical projects and initiatives always have a robust financial foundation.

LCF manages a diverse portfolio of over 100 funds, each tailored to support specific aspects of community giving. While the terminology might seem technical at first, here’s a simple breakdown of the most common fund types: Donor Advised Funds, Designated Funds, Field of Interest Funds, Scholarship Funds, and Unrestricted Funds.

A Donor Advised Fund is where the donor provides the funds and offers suggestions on where it should be used. The foundation retains ultimate control, ensuring that the funds are managed responsibly.

Designated Funds are created when a donor wants their contribution to benefit a specific charity or cause. It’s like writing a personal note with a check—your gift goes exactly where you intended.

Field of Interest Funds is more general than Designated Funds. The donor wants to support a certain field like education, healthcare, youth programs, the arts or another cause. This type of fund allows you to concentrate your giving on that specific subject, addressing the most pressing needs tied to your interests.

Nearly half of all funds managed by LCF are dedicated to Scholarships. These funds empower local students by making college education more accessible. Each year, LCF collaborates with schools to manage applications, coordinate selection committees, and distribute funds to deserving students, thereby shaping a brighter future for many young residents.

Unrestricted Funds are a versatile type of financial resources, which can be allocated to the area of greatest need, as determined by the Foundation board. This flexibility allows the foundation to

Founder, John MacDonell
Scholarship in memory of Teacher, Monica Berger
Robin T. Frazier

respond swiftly to emergencies or unforeseen challenges, ensuring timely support for the community.

In addition to these fund types, LCF also offers a service known as Fiscal Sponsorship through Community Project Funds. When an individual or group has a promising community project but hasn’t (or can’t yet) establish nonprofit status, LCF steps in. Acting as a sponsor, the foundation manages all the administrative duties—like fundraising administration, acknowledging tax-deductible donations, bookkeeping, and IRS reporting—allowing the project team to focus solely on making an impact. An example of this is the Lima Community Aquatic Park Project, where LCF manages the financial and regulatory aspects behind the scenes.

There are many ways to contribute to the foundation. Residents can make an immediate gift using a check, credit, or debit card. Others might prefer transferring marketable securities—such as stocks— because if these assets have been held for more than one year, donors can enjoy significant tax advantages. Moreover, for those planning for the long term, there’s the option of giving through retirement accounts. Donors can name LCF as the beneficiary of their assets or participate in a charitable IRA rollover, which allows individuals aged 70½ or older to transfer funds directly from their retirement accounts to the foundation, maximizing their impact while also benefiting from potential tax breaks.

nity projects, LCF is committed to “sowing the seeds” for a flourishing future.

For anyone in our neighborhood—whether you’re a longstanding resident, a local business owner, or simply someone who believes in the power of community—LCF represents a smart and impactful way to give back. It’s not just about donating money; it’s about investing in a future where every resident in Lima can thrive. By contributing to a community foundation like LCF, you become part of a collective effort that transforms individual generosity into a legacy of shared prosperity and lasting change.

For more information, visit our website at www. limacommunityfoundation.org. For specific information on Fund Development, please contact us at (419) 221-5928 or lcfdirector@limacommunityfoundation.org.

Fundamentally, every gift to LCF is a clear vote of confidence in our community’s future. The foundation not only adapts to the changing needs of Lima by consulting with local leaders, businesses, and nonprofits, but it also anticipates future challenges, ensuring that funds are used in the most effective ways possible. Whether through direct support for educational scholarships, targeted grants for nonprofits, or comprehensive backing for commu-

MERCY HEALTH - ST. RITA’S SPONSORS A TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL FOCUSING ON MENTAL HEALTH

When it comes to taking care of the whole person, Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center has you covered! Their mission to improve health goes beyond the hospital setting and continues out into the community. Recently, Mercy Health’s sponsorship of the Tony Award-Winning Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen, on March 23rd at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center, proves just that. St. Rita’s brought world class entertainment to Lima and simultaneously showcased the importance of mental health. They accomplished this by also creating a pre-show experience for local high school students and St. Rita’s Project Search Students, a VIP event prior to the show, and then sponsoring the show itself!

Mercy Health used the Dear Evan Hansen theme to reach out to high school aged students in the community. Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of Evan Hansen, a high school student who always feels like he’s on the outside looking in. During a special pre-show opportunity, over 100 high school students from 15 area schools and Project Search – Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center had a day that focused on mental health, social anxiety, and the power of connection – just like the show! Melanie Woods, Care Management Manager, explained, “my focus for that day was about the impact of social anxiety at home, school, and socially.” She also spoke about the importance of sharing your experience with others to help normalize

anxious feelings and how that helps reduce stigma. Students learned about tools to help manage anxious feelings as well as identifying potential supports in their circle of people. They then explored behindthe-scenes careers, ran lights, and stood on the same stage where Broadway tours perform.

Ann Stiles, Community Affairs Coordinator, shared that it was such an amazing day. “Last year, when the Civic Center came to us about the show we would sponsor, and it was Dear Evan Hansen, it spoke to our hearts and our mission. “Thank you to Melanie Woods, Mental Health & Recovery Board, VMCC, PASS and most importantly our Project Search students and so many of our area high school students dedicated to making a difference.” Leigh Taylor, Project Search Coordinator and instructor, appreciates Mercy Health and the Civic Center’s commitment to providing students with hands-on experiences. “The interns were involved in an amazing day and discussing mental health awareness is important. We can’t thank Mercy Health, Ann Stiles, and Carmen Cecala-Wells enough for the informative and exciting day with the interns and other kids from many of the schools around the area.”

Before the curtain went up on March 23rd, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s also hosted a VIP party that highlighted the talents of local students. Mercy Health invited its Project Search interns to showcase their artwork and posters inspired by messages from the musical. Carmen Cecala – Wells, Director of Development for the Civic Center Foundation, expressed, “It’s been really nice to be able to collaborate and do this all together for such an important message.” Dear Evan Hansen on tour reminds us: you are not alone.

An

How Optimism Has Paved My Road to Success: An Acrostic

Within the next three issues, Shawnee Life Magazine will feature the first, second and third place essay contest winners from our local chapter of Optimist International’s Annual Essay Contest. Here you will find the third place winner from Lima Central Catholic student, Melana Badea

Optimism is a dynamic concept within my mind. It transcends its dictionary definition and transpires into real actions. It encompasses far more attributes than just hopefulness. For me, optimism has facilitated my drive to become my best self. I interpret optimism as a compelling portrayal of actions that manage to take on several forms within my life;

each form leading me to better each aspect of myself. Optimism is greater than a noun, it is an acronym that sparks success!

Opportunity. I scavenge for the next adventure I can take. Whether it be a volunteering event, tutoring session, workout, or even a simple conversation. Every time I take on a new opportunity, I understand that I can help change someone’s life. I can even influence my own with challenges I face during them. I seek opportunities and become dependable and experienced.

Persistence. Pulling, pushing through inauspicious times…it is not easy. It requires a strong grit from within. A grit that continues to pursue the task at hand no matter how grim the future may seem. I have been able to persevere through the workload of extra college classes and long work shifts. I have been able to test my limits and develop into a stronger person by being persistent.

Tenacity. I am not easily driven off or dispelled. I will not fall into despair and give up hope. Even when I received the news that I couldn’t play one of the sports that brought me so much joy, I did not lose faith. I adjusted my goals and accepted the fact that I’d have to work harder. I have stayed firm in my path through adversity.

Inquisitiveness. Constantly, I illuminate myself with ideas. I ask people, people who I look up to and aspire to be, how they live their lives. What did they do to make their footprint in the world? They did not fear their abilities or think of the worst! These people remained headstrong and trusted their intellect and efforts. I have learned to trust the work I put in and I have reaped the rewards from asking questions.

Motivation. It takes many “You, got this”s to get through a school day, softball game, and long study night. I remind myself, over and over again with encouraging quotes in the morning and reflective times

before bed, that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. By being able to inspire myself, I have gained the courage to take on daunting tasks.

Integrity. What is the right thing to do when my team’s morale is low? What should I do when those around me might judge me for pursuing my path? I cannot linger in disappointment or expect the worst in those around me. The right thing to do is to continue with confidence. I can boost the spirits of my teammates and shake off the glances and stares.

Success. For a long time, success meant the highest grade in the class or best science project. Success was a perfect grade card, batting average, and the perfect life. I began to focus on the outcome more than the process and when things didn’t work out, when I wasn’t perfect, I almost lost hope. I realized my view of success needed a change. Success is not measured on a grade scale, it is my ability to make my dreams come true and be proud of the person I see in the mirror at the end of the day. With this new outlook on life, I find myself succeeding more often.

Making it happen. A positive mindset is vital to my journey, however it does not work alone. I can believe things will turn out alright, but I need to do my part to manifest them. I need to seize opportunities, remain persistent in my endeavors, and use my tenacity to stay mission oriented. I need to ask questions to decipher the best path to take and motivate myself along the way. When times get difficult and it’s tempting to take the easy way out, I need to tune into my integrity and do what is best. My goal to be content with the person I have become can only be accomplished if I make it happen.

Optimism is an intrinsic value of mine that cannot be undermined! No matter how much skepticism or doubt my life hurls at me, the inherent belief that something, anything good will arise in the end, the belief that I will make the good happen…it dominates and leads me toward achievement. Success, though its meaning has changed throughout my life, would have never transpired without optimism and my driving actions.

Father’s Day Messages

Magic Made Real: Our Disney Experience

As a parent, you dream about giving your children magical memories—those once-in-a-lifetime experiences they’ll remember forever. For our family, that dream came true at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

We’re a family of four with two young kids—Lakin (7) and Jacob (2). Traveling with little ones always requires patience, flexibility, and a solid plan. But traveling with Lakin, who sees and experiences the world a bit differently, brings an added layer of unpredictability. New environments, transitions, and unexpected moments can quickly become overwhelming. So when we booked our first-ever family trip to Disney, we were hopeful—but cautiously optimistic.

We had always heard that Disney “goes above and beyond,” but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely. From the moment we arrived, every single cast

member—from bus drivers and janitors to ride operators and princesses—seemed genuinely invested in making our family’s experience just as magical as everyone else’s.

One moment early in our trip set the tone for everything that followed. We had just stepped off a long shuttle ride from the airport to our resort after an early morning flight. Without much of a break, we turned around and boarded a Disney bus headed to Blizzard Beach. Everyone was tired—especially Lakin—and she wasn’t exactly thrilled about hopping on yet another vehicle. But our bus driver, a kind woman with an incredible knack for connecting with kids, immediately noticed and stepped in.

She started a simple game with Lakin, encouraging her to spot and “find” all the Disney character-themed buses along the way. It was such a small gesture, but it made a huge difference. Lakin went from being tired and withdrawn to fully engaged and giggling. By the time we arrived, my wife and I felt both reassured and informed about the transportation system—and our daughter was already smiling. That short ride set the tone for the entire trip and reminded us that we were in a place where people truly cared.

Jon & Stepanie with kids, Jacob & Lakin

That care and attentiveness continued throughout our time at Disney. From ride operators who offered an extra turn because Lakin enjoyed it so much, to countless cast members who went out of their way to make our kids feel special, we felt supported every step of the way. These weren’t just nice moments—they were reminders that Disney was designed for families like ours.

But what made the trip truly magical wasn’t any single experience—it was seeing the entire vacation through our children’s eyes. My favorite memories aren’t tied to a specific ride or show; they’re the expressions of joy, wonder, and pure excitement on my kids’ faces. Watching them light up over and over again was something I’ll never forget.

This was our first time visiting Disney World as a family. My wife and I had fond memories of going as children, but seeing it again as parents was a completely different experience. It was nostalgic and heartwarming, yes—but it was also emotional in a whole new way. We weren’t just revisiting a place from our childhoods—we were building new memories, side by side with our own kids.

What struck me the most was how effortlessly Disney blended fun and flexibility. We never felt like we had to “manage” the day. Every experience—from attractions to dining to downtime—felt intentionally crafted to accommodate all kinds of families, including ours.

I’ve always admired Disney’s attention to detail, but after this trip, I’ve realized what truly sets it apart: the people. The cast members weren’t just doing their jobs—they were creating moments that we’ll cherish for a lifetime. They met us where we were, and in doing so, helped us feel not just welcome, but truly celebrated.

Since coming home, not a day goes by that we don’t talk about the trip. Jacob still pretends to see ghosts from the Haunted Mansion, and Lakin always asks to rewatch her video from the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. These aren’t just fun stories—they’re treasured pieces of our family’s story.

Disney didn’t just give us a vacation. It gave us connection, joy, and an overwhelming sense of belonging.

If you’re wondering whether Disney really lives up to its reputation—especially for families with unique challenges—let me say this: not only does it live up to the hype, it exceeds it. Because when a place is built with heart and intention, the magic isn’t just in the fireworks or the castles—it’s in the way you feel seen, supported, and truly part of something special.

Achievers

Sanaa Khandakani

Creating art is a beautiful process that takes extreme time and dedication. But creating art that sends a message to its audience is a feat that requires even more passion and commitment to the craft. Despite these challenges, Shawnee sophomore Sanaa Khandakani has dedicated herself fully to her art, using combinations of oil and acrylic paints, markers, colored pencils, and many more mediums to convey powerful and subversive messages.

Sanaa has been fascinated by art and the creative process as a whole from a young age, having decided that she would one day be an artist before even graduating preschool. When she developed a passion for defending human rights and political activism not long after, Sanaa realized that she could combine her talents, working deep meanings and moving takes into the surface of a canvas with skillful strokes of her brush.

“I like making political statements through my art. It is fun to take an idea and share it with people through visual art,” explains Sanaa.

Sanaa’s art has been recognized many times, having won her two gold keys at the Scholastic Writing and Art Awards and second place for assemblage at the Kewpee Art Show. A piece of hers titled “The Blood on our Hands” even won a national award in the Never Such Innocence contest, an art competition that challenges young artists to share their perspective on war through their work.

Outside of her art, Sanaa is incredibly active at Shawnee High School. She is an avid member of Shawnee’s AVATAR maga-

zine club, art club, debate club, the Voices for Change club, and the Science Olympiad team, which recently qualified for and competed in a state competition. This year, Sanaa has even gone above and beyond by creating a club of her own called Arab Culture and Dabke Club. The group seeks to create a more racially inclusive and accepting environment in Shawnee schools and the community as a whole, while also educating members on Arab culture and even teaching them how to perform Dabke, a traditional Levant dance.

After graduation, Sanaa plans to attend The Ohio State University, where she will major in art education and political science. She hopes to one day become a high school art teacher and have an art studio of her own.

Whenever she has free time, Sanaa loves nothing more than reading a good book, especially those with deeper meanings like those which can be found in her art. Sanaa is also passionate about fashion and makeup, and enjoys trying out new styles on herself. She has also recently been preparing herself to get her driver’s license, which she hopes will allow her to get a job and support her developing art career.

Sanaa lives with her sister, who majors in Islamic Studies and Linguistics at OSU, her brother, who is currently in eighth grade at Shawnee, her mother, who works as an internal medicine resident physician at St. Rita’s, and her father, who works as an ophthalmic technician. Sanaa continues to work hard and create beautiful art as she always has, and she hopes to use her pieces to spread her messages of acceptance and love throughout the world.

Bacon Cheddar Scones

from the kitchen of Shawnee Life Sponsor, Sara Anderson of Sara’s Sweets

To almost everyone who has either lived in Lima or shopped here for the last almost 10 years, Sara’s Sweets in the mini coffee-smoothie-bakery strip on Eastown Road, has become a delightful, designated sweet treat destination. Owing its enchantingly welcoming ambience to the uplifting aroma of sugar and spice that envelops the senses as soon as its front door is opened, Sara’s Sweets has been a long-time Shawnee Life Magazine sponsor for years. And to Sara Anderson, the Lima area owes a debt of gratitude to this amazing business owner and her skilled and helpful staff for their inventive, creative and delicious cupcakes, cakes, bars, brownie squares, cookies and more that appear to have materialized straight out of a fairytale kitchen combining imaginative ingredients, seasonal themes and beautifully “tasteful” designs.

Here, Sara generously shares her recipe for her hearty Bacon Cheddar Scones, ideal for holidays, entertaining guests, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Sara also suggests these for a weekend brunch, a Father’s Day spread any dad would savor, or alongside an entrée salad or pot of soup.

Ingredients:

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

• ½ cup cold butter, cut into small cubes

• 1 ½ cups grated sharp cheddar cheese

• 4 green onions thinly sliced

• 8 slices thick-cut bacon, cooked and crumbled

• ½ cup sour cream

• ½ cup milk

• 1 egg yolk

• 1 tablespoon water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and pepper in medium mixing bowl. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter or two knives, until mixture is crumbly and the butter is small-sized pieces. Add cheese, and stir until combined. In a separate small bowl, whisk together sour cream and milk. Mix into the flour combination the green onions, bacon and sour cream/milk mixture. Stir by hand with a spatula until all ingredients are incorporated. (If it seems too dry, add an additional 2-3 tablespoons milk until the dough comes together.) Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and pat into an 8-inch disc. Slice into 10-12 wedges. Place individual wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, or sprayed with cooking spray. For egg wash, combine egg yolk and 1 tablespoon water into a small bowl. Lightly brush egg wash over scones with a pastry brush. Bake scones in preheated oven for 18-20 minutes until golden brown, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Sara’s family celebrated the bakery’s 9th birthday last December.

Driven to Give:

The Taylor Automotive Family’s Journey of Service and Impact

Since opening its doors in 1979, the Taylor Automotive Family has held tightly to a powerful belief: when you invest in the community, the community invests in you. With a legacy built on being locally owned and locally committed, the Taylors have gone far beyond selling cars — they’ve become an essential part of the heart and soul of Northwest Ohio.

For the Taylor team, community engagement isn’t a line on a mission statement or a framed plaque on the wall — it’s a daily, living promise. That commitment is brought to life through their five dedicated Community Outreach Ambassadors, each tasked with one clear goal: to give back. Through authentic relationships, hands-on service, and heartfelt initiatives, these ambassadors are sparking positive change across the region.

In Lima, that spark is ignited by Victoria Kimmel, the passionate and driven Community Ambassador for the Taylor Automotive Family. With nearly three decades of leadership experience in the financial services corporate world as well as board service in public education and the nonprofit sector — plus her roles as a proud wife and mother of two thriving young adults — Victoria brings

energy, wisdom, and heart to everything she does. Her mission? To uplift others, amplify local heroes, and help individuals and organizations stretch beyond their limits to achieve bold, meaningful goals.

A Passion for People, Purpose, and Progress

Through Victoria’s dedication, Taylor Kia of Lima has become a beacon of community engagement. Whether it’s supporting veterans, empowering women, championing the arts, supporting education, feeding senior citizens or beautification of local parks, Victoria and Taylor Kia of Lima are always finding new ways to serve.

One partnership especially close to her heart is with Warriors Way, a Lima-based nonprofit offering free recreational therapy through knife-making classes to veterans, first responders, and youth. “This organization is doing powerful, healing work,” Victoria shares. “It’s handson, meaningful, and life-changing.”

The Taylor Kia of Lima not only sponsors ongoing initiatives at Warriors Way but also brought their entire leadership team for a unique knife-forging retreat. “It gave us a chance to truly connect — with each other, and with their incredible mission.”

Each May, Taylor Kia of Lima donates a portion of every car sold directly to Warriors Way, turning every customer into a partner in their mission.

Putting Women in the Driver’s

Seat

Victoria is also the engine behind bringing the inspiring “Women in the Driver’s Seat” series to the Lima area. Originally created by fellow Taylor Ambassador MaryHelen Darah in Sylvania, this empowering series spotlights women who are making a difference in their communities.

Victoria’s interviews have featured local leaders like Jill Ackerman, Superintendent of Lima City Schools; Kari Taylor, Executive Director of Cornerstone of Hope; Sara Ambroza, President of the Mercy Health Foundation; and many others — from media personalities to Chamber of Commerce executives.

“These women are phenomenal,” Victoria says. “They’re bold, compassionate, innovative — and so generous with their stories. Every conversation teaches me something new, and I’m honored to help shine a light on their work.”

Taylor Automotive has a strong and active presence on social media and their YouTube channel where the series receives thousands of views. Women in the Driver’s Seat continues to grow as a source of inspiration and connection.

Getting Hands-On in the Heart of Nature

Each year, Victoria and the entire Taylor Kia of Lima team put on their work gloves and head to Hermon Woodlands Park for a day of outdoor service. Together with park rangers, the team helps spread mulch and remove invasive mustard weed from the woods.

“It’s one of our favorite days,” Victoria laughs. “We have fun, we get dirty, and we make a real difference. Plus, who doesn’t love wandering the woods looking for mustard weed?”

This annual tradition not only supports the park’s preservation efforts but also brings the dealership team closer together in a shared mission of stewardship and pride in their local environment.

Creativity on Display

In the winter months, the dealership’s large front windows transform into a canvas for joy, thanks to the talented students of the Elida High School Art Club. Under the guidance of art teacher Mrs. Albright, students create festive holiday scenes — from twinkling snowflakes to cheerful reindeer — bringing seasonal magic to the showroom.

“This project is so much more than painting,” Victoria explains. “It’s about giving young artists the chance to work with real-world clients and stretch their creative muscles. And in return, we’re proud to support the growth of the art program.”

Rooted in Relationships

Although Victoria wasn’t born in Lima, she’s made it her mission to become deeply woven into the fabric of the community. She’s a proud 2024 graduate of the Allen Lima Leadership program (“The best class ever!” she confidently exclaims), and she contributes to the Lima/Allen Chamber of Commerce, New Vision BNI, and several local nonprofits.

Her husband, Shane, shares the same passion for service, serving as Managing Partner at the Lima dealership and General Manager of both Taylor Kia and Taylor Hyundai in Findlay. Together, they’ve built not just careers, but a legacy of leadership and impact.

More Than a Business

With the support of their incredible customers, the energy of their dedicated team, and the heartfelt generosity of Stephen Taylor Jr. and Steve Taylor Sr., the Taylor Automotive Family is driving more than cars — they’re driving change.

“We want to be more than just a business,” Victoria says with a warm smile. “We want to be part of the fabric of the community. We want to build lasting relationships, celebrate local heroes, and help shape a stronger, brighter tomorrow.”

CANINE COMMUNICATION

Sasha’s Songs

We all wish we could talk with our dogs. Just what would our furry friends say if they had the ability to speak our language? While we can’t exactly hold a one-on-one conversation with our pups, there are some dog-talk words that scientists believe they’ve successfully translated. For example, have you ever heard your dog let out a big, deep sigh? It turns out that this means the same thing for dogs as it does humans; they could be sighing with contentment, or they could be sighing in frustration that you won’t fork over your dinner plate! Dog sneezes, on the other hand, have a little more meaning to them than human sneezes. When a dog sneezes during play, that’s her way of letting you know that all this roughing and tussling you’ve been doing together is just for fun- basically assuring you you’re not actually fighting! A shared disappointment among many dog owners is that our pups can’t laugh along with us. Well, it turns out they actually can, in their own way! Dogs “laugh” by panting with short little bursts of air, which tells all the nearby pups that it’s time to run and play!

SASHA

One local family has a pooch who is exceptionally vocal! Sasha is a seven-year-old merle Great Dane who lives with the Gibson family. She was brought home after the Gibsons had seen an advertisement for her online. After just one visit with Sasha at her foster home, the family knew that this was the dog for them!

Even though Sasha was the family’s first ever puppy, she fit in so well that soon the Gibsons couldn’t imagine life without her.

During Sasha’s first few days after adoption, she was nervous to be without her mom and siblings, and thus had a hard time going to bed. To make her feel at home, the Gibsons would take turns sleeping downstairs right next to Sasha’s kennel every night until the pup learned that this was her new family.

Since then, Sasha has grown up fast. She was quick to learn all the basics: how to sit, stay, sneak food off the table, and plead with her people for a drink from the faucet! Sasha even dutifully attended an obedience class, but she wasn’t too keen on learning any real obedience; all she ever wanted to do was run the agility course over and over again!

Sasha is a unique dog in many ways, but one of the more peculiar aspects of her personality is her deep fascination with cats. She has “adopted” a set group of stray cats as being hers, and she will always search for them when she’s out and about.

When spring rolls around each year and these cats have kittens, Sasha is trusted enough to get close to and even play with them- though she must contain her excitement as best as she can as to not scare the babies!

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is Sasha’s love for talking. No matter what she’s doing or where she is, Sasha has something to say about it.

“She will sing the song of her people as we say when she plays with her snake chew toy… she chomps and howls at the same time!” says mother Karla.

Sasha will also sing along to the sound of the answering machine, and if something ever doesn’t go her way, you’re sure to get an earful! And, perhaps taking from her feline friends, Sasha makes deep rumbles resembling a purr whenever she’s exceptionally happy.

Now, Sasha spends her days doing anything and everything she can with her family. She adores taking long walks at the pond near her house, and on occasion, the Gibsons will bring Sasha with them as they run errands. As such, some of Sasha’s favorite places include Dot’s, Lowes, and the recycling center. Sasha is even a bit of a local celebrity among Shawnee students, as she has become the designated therapy dog during exam season! During these difficult and tiresome days for students, the Gibsons will bring Sasha to the high school, where she can dole out cuddles, kisses, and pure puppy stress relief wherever she sees fit!

Whenever she’s at home, Sasha will pass her time playing hide and seek with her family and searching for treats that they’ve hidden around the house. And when her energy has finally worn out, Sasha will wrap herself in a blanket and snuggle down for a long nap!

Sasha’s family consists of parents Israel and Karla Gibson, who teach history and Spanish respectively at Shawnee High School, son Isaiah, who is a senior at Shawnee, and daughter - , who is now moved out and works at Walmart. The family lives out in rural Lima, where they enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

And though said quiet is frequently interrupted by one of Sasha’s barks, songs, or purrs, for the Gibsons, Sasha’s sounds make their house feel all the more like a home!

The Retirement Tax Surprise:

What Boomers Need to Know Before It’s Too Late

You did it.

You worked hard, saved consistently, and now you’re either enjoying retirement—or it’s just around the corner.

You’ve been told for years to put money into retirement accounts, defer taxes, and wait for the golden years. But wait… no one told you?

Retirement might be your highest-taxed phase yet.

Seriously.

Between Social Security income, Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), capital gains, Medicare premium adjustments, and even state taxes… it can feel like a financial ambush.

Let’s break down why this happens—and what you can do now to soften the blow.

1. RMDs: The Tax Bomb That Starts at Age 73

If you’ve saved in a traditional IRA or 401(k), you’ve been enjoying tax deferral for years. But the IRS eventually wants their cut.

That’s where RMDs come in.

Once you hit age 73, you’re forced to take money out of your retirement accounts—and those withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income.

Why it matters:

Your RMD could bump you into a higher tax bracket.

It could trigger higher Medicare premiums (thanks, IRMAA).

It might even impact how much of your Social Security is taxed.

What to do now:

Consider Roth conversions in your 60s to reduce your future RMDs. Yes, you’ll pay tax now, but it could save you significantly down the road.

2. Social Security Isn’t Always Tax-Free

Up to 85% of your Social Security benefits could be taxable depending on your total income—including investment income, part-time work, and yes, those RMDs.

Here’s the trap:

You think you’re getting $3,000/month from Social Security.

But add in just a few thousand from another source, and suddenly, a big chunk of that is taxable.

Solution:

Work with an advisor who can map out income sources before you trigger your benefits. Sometimes, waiting a year or two—or rebalancing your withdrawal strategy—can dramatically reduce taxes.

3. IRMAA: The Medicare Surcharge You Didn’t See Coming

This one stings.

You file your taxes, enjoy a good year, and then boom—two years later, your Medicare premiums go up.

That’s IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

If your income exceeds certain thresholds, you’ll pay more for Medicare Part B and D—even if the bump was from a one-time event like a Roth conversion or asset sale.

Proactive planning = lower premiums.

A well-timed income strategy can keep you just under IRMAA thresholds. And in some cases, you can file an appeal based on a “life-changing event” like retirement or loss of income.

4. Capital Gains & Selling Assets in Retirement

Selling your long-held investments? Downsizing your home?

These capital gains could push your income higher than expected—and cause a domino effect with taxes, Medicare, and Social Security.

Even if you’re “living off savings,” your tax return may tell a different story.

Pro-tip:

There’s a 0% capital gains bracket for certain income ranges. With the right strategy, you can sell appreciated assets without triggering taxes—but timing is everything.

5. State Taxes Still Matter—Even in Retirement

Not all states treat retirees the same.

Some tax Social Security, some don’t. Some offer pension exemptions, others tax everything.

If you’re thinking about relocating in retirement, don’t just compare housing costs. Compare tax policies. And if you’re staying put? Learn how your current state impacts your bottom line.

6. Your Filing Status Can Change Your Tax Life

A tough but important truth: Losing a spouse in retirement often means going from “Married Filing Jointly” to “Single.”

Which means:

- Lower standard deductions

- Tighter income thresholds

- Bigger tax bills on the same income

If you’re newly widowed or preparing for that reality, it’s worth building a multi-year tax strategy now— not later.

7. You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

The retirement tax landscape is not DIYfriendly.

Rules change. Thresholds shift. And one wrong move (or missed opportunity) can cost you thousands.

But with the right guide, you can:

- Smooth out income across years

- Reduce your lifetime tax bill

- Maximize your Social Security and Medicare benefits

- And keep more of the money you worked so hard to earn

Build a Tax-Smart Retirement Plan

You planned for retirement.

Now it’s time to plan for retirement taxes.

Seek out a professional to make smart, proactive decisions that reduce surprises, minimize your tax burden, and give you the peace of mind to enjoy the years ahead.

You’ve done the saving—now let’s make sure you keep more of it.
