POLO – Kittens, by most estimations, are cute, cuddly and lovable, the sort of winsome creatures that adorn Christmas and birthday cards. But they are also remarkably helpless, especially during their initial days and weeks of life. When kittens are born, their eyes are closed, rendering them blind, and they are also deaf. They can’t walk, and they can’t feed themselves without the mother cat nursing them. In short, without their mother’s nurturing, they face an almost certain death sentence. That was the grim fate facing a litter of five newborns Polo High School agriculture teacher Stephanie Ruppert discovered Oct. 10 on her family’s farm west of Lanark in rural Carroll County. DIXON – Five candidates are vying for three open seats in the Lee County Board’s only contested district. Democrat Bob Olson is running as the sole incumbent for the District 1 seat, and he will face off against newcomers Mike Koppien and Clay Partington, both Republicans, along with Democrats Luke Christoffersen and Adam Wetsel. Board Chairman Rick Ketchum has held his District 1 seat for 16 years, the last 4 as chairman, and he will be stepping down at the completion of his term in December. The remaining spot belonged to former board member Ann Taylor. COUNTY BOARD continued on A94
A lot riding on Tuesday The land of the free isn’t the only place with high-stakes races; the Land of Lincoln has some, too Tribune News Service
The final weekend of a unique election season closed with candidates making pleas for votes across the state amid extensive television advertising, their closing pitches fueled by unprecedented amounts of campaign cash. The stakes are high Tuesday in Illinois. The successor to a hometown president will be chosen. The outcome of the state’s U.S. Senate race will help decide whether Democrats take over the chamber. And Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan will see who gains ground and who loses it in the proxy wars they’re waging in contests for state comptroller and the General Assembly. Helping a pilot make a name for himself Ahead of Veterans Day, Chuck Pomazal of Dixon lays out a stencil Sunday morning on the F-105 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Dixon as he prepares to paint Edward Rock’s name on the side of the jet. Rock, a Dixon native now living in Missouri, is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who joined the service in 1950 and retired in 1977. In that time, he earned more than 50 military awards and decorations, among them: two Silver Stars, The Legion of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 16 Air Medals. Rock was among the first pilots to hunt missile sites in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, as part of the “Wild Weasel” program developed by the Air Force to sniff out missiles using special airborne electronics. His 2005 book, “First In, Last Out, Stories by The Wild Weasels,” compiles more than 40 stories about the squadron, mostly from Wild Weasel pilots and Electronic Warfare Officers. Rock flew 11 different aircraft over his 27-year career, but his workhorse was the Republic F-105 Thunderchief – nicknamed “Thud” for its booming afterburner.
