Follow along with Samir (Malik Elassal, “Joe Pickett”) and friends as they stumble into adulthood in the new, aptly named comedy series “Adults,” premiering back-to-back episodes Wednesday, May 28, on FX. Also starring Lucy Freyer (“Paint,” 2023) as Billie, Amita Rao (“Deli Boys”) as Issa, Owen Thiele (“Dollface”) as Anton and Jack Innanen (“The Office Movers”) as the always full-named Paul Baker, new episodes land next day on Hulu.

There is something about a ragtag group of friends that the television industry just loves to latch on to. From “Three’s Company” in 1977 to “Seinfeld” in ‘89, “Friends” in ‘94 and “How I Met Your Mother” in 2005, proof that the ensemble comedy is alive and well rests in the DNA of shows such as HBO’s “Girls” and Netflix’s new Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live”) dramedy, “The Four Seasons,” which premiered May 1.
Joining the ranks of these predecessors and various other contemporaries is FX’s series “Adults,” premiering with two episodes Wednesday, May 28, on the broadcast network and the next day on Hulu.
Created by Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, both of whom got their start as writers for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Adults” follows a group of 20-somethings in New York City who get a real taste of adulthood while staying at a friend’s childhood home while his parents are away on an RV trip across the United States.
The friend in question, Samir (Malik Elassal, “Joe Pickett”), has taken on the role of “de facto man of the house,” per the FX-released press materials, and is responsible for taking care of the home in his parents’ absence despite the fact that he can barely take care of himself. Described as “struggling to launch,” Samir is growing into a fine young man but still struggles to understand the complexities of his parents’ boiler and the importance of separating laundry.
Growing up, Samir had his parents to rely on, but he also had Billie (Lucy Freyer, “Paint,” 2023). His childhood best friend, Billie was quick to mature and often found herself in control of matters, regardless of the situation. But after a poor choice at work that ended with her “vaguely threaten[ing] her boss,” says FX, Billie is back at

square one: questioning her choices and mulling over her previously decided-upon path in life.
Joining Samir and Billie in their quests to be kind and functioning members of society are fellow burgeoning adults Issa (Amita Rao, “Deli Boys”), Anton (Owen Thiele, “Dollface”) and the always full-named Paul Baker (Jack Innanen, “The Office Movers”).
Issa, who has been prone to collecting odd jobs as she learns which passion she wants to channel her energy into, is currently teaching a children’s dance class. Ever the driven activist type, Issa is described by FX as someone who “loves her friends hard but struggles to feel heard.” When audiences meet Issa, she is neck deep in learning more about organized religion but has found that they all have one common thread: people talking. When she is not running around looking for work or divine answers, Issa spends the bulk of her time with her boyfriend, Paul Baker.
Paul Baker is known by both names despite the fact that he is the only Paul in their immediate friend group. Why? Well, some people just suit their full name better — like “Colin Robinson” of FX’s vampire series “What We Do in the Shadows,” for instance). A kind Canadian who moved to New York City to leave his imprint on the city — or maybe to have the city leave its imprint on him — Paul Baker is happy to have finally found a friend group that suits his personality and his lifestyle.
Last but not least in the group is Anton, “the only member of the friend group with a real job, even though he doesn’t quite understand what it is” (per FX). Despite initially only having ties to Samir, his college roommate, Anton has developed a close, fairly boundaryless relationship with all four of the others. Although the connection is genuine, intense friendships are par for the course with Anton and his oozing charisma. The series comes from Kronengold and Shaw, who have
worked as a duo ever since their viral 2018 joint Yale graduation speech in front of public figure and honored guest Hillary Clinton. Their unbeatable chemistry, impeccable comedic timing and their own recent lived experiences with “adulting” show through the fiber of the new FX series.
“We’re so grateful to be telling this story about a group of
friends navigating the hardest, horniest time of life together,”
Kronengold and Shaw said in a joint statement after “Adults” was picked up by FX.
“FX comedies have defined our generation,” the pair continued, “and we can’t wait to show them the consequences.”
Kronengold and Shaw executive produce “Adults” alongside Stefani Robinson (“Atlanta”),
Sarah Naftalis (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Jonathan Krisel (“Baskets”) and Nick Kroll (“Big Mouth”) and Alicia Van Couvering (“Drinking Buddies”) under the banner of Kroll’s Good At Business production company, which formed in 2020.
Series direction is provided by Krisel (episode 1), “We Strangers” (2024) director Anu Valia (episodes 2, 3 and 4),
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (2020) director Jason Woliner (episodes 5 and 6), Robinson (Episode 7) and Kroll (Episode 8). New episodes will be released weekly in pairs until the June 18 finale. Don’t miss the double-episode premiere of “Adults” when it lands Wednesday, May 28, on FX. All episodes will release next day on Hulu.

Second shot at love: ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor” has been renewed for a second season, and the senior-focused spinoff of “The Bachelor” has already found its second leading man.
Mel Owens, a 66-year-old former NFL player-turned-lawyer, will be this season’s lead as he searches for a partner with whom to share “the sunset years of life,” as ABC puts it.
Born and raised in Detroit, Owens played college football at the University of Michigan before being drafted ninth overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 1981. After nine seasons as a linebacker for the Rams, Owens retired from the sport, eventually obtaining his law degree from UC San Francisco. And, according to the ABC press release, “It was during this time that he met his first love.”
But upon the end of his marriage, Owens devoted himself to being a doting dad to their two sons. Now, he’s “ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship — sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future and growing stronger together as a couple,” says ABC. As the Golden Bachelor, Owens is eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.
Owens succeeds Gerry Turner, the inaugural senior sweetheart whose televised love quest hit a few snags on- and off-screen. There were allegations that Turner had misrepresented his past, and his love match with Theresa Nist ended in divorce just a few months after their marriage on live TV, with distance and Turner’s cancer diagnosis reportedly factoring in their split.
Despite the not-quite-happilyever-after ending, Season 1 did deliver the franchise’s highest ratings in years, averaging 10.4 mil-
lion viewers in live plus-35 multiplatform viewing.
There is no official word yet on a premiere date for Season 2 of “The Golden Bachelor,” which is expected to start shooting next month.
Short hosting stint: While the comedic murder mystery “Only Murders in the Building” has been renewed for a fifth season, series star Martin Short (“Schmigadoon!”) is expanding his working relationship with parent company Disney.
The Canadian-born Emmy- and Tony-winning comedian has signed on to host Disney-owned ABC’s revival of “Match Game.”
A typically star-studded game show that’s big on laughs, “Match Game” features non-famous contestants competing for $25,000 as they try to guess and match the answers given by celebrity panelists to fill-in-theblank questions.
Serving as an executive producer alongside Alycia Rossiter (“To Tell the Truth”), Short brings a wealth of hosting experience, having previously helmed “The Martin Short Show” and “Primetime Glick.”
Production is expected to begin soon in Montreal for a not-sodistant premiere date of Wednesday, July 23, on ABC, following the return of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” hosted by Jimmy Kimmel (“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”).
While the original (non-comedic) NBC version of “The Match Game” ran from 1962 to 1969, its now-familiar format can be traced back to its relaunch on CBS in 1973. Since then, the game show has been revived a few more times, with the latest hosted by Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”). That version of “Match Game” enjoyed a five-season run on ABC before it was formally canceled in 2022 after COVID-19 largely halted production, and the last batch of new episodes aired in the summer of 2021.

Anything for love
Hopeless romantics mix and mingle in
By Sarah Passingham TV Media
There is nothing some people won’t try to find companionship. A collection of single, former 90 Day franchise stars are ready to fall head over heels yet again, this time in Tulum, Mexico. The new reality dating show, “90 Day: Hunt for Love,” premiering Monday, May 26, on TLC, takes eight hopeless romantics to a tropical resort to see if sparks fly.
The singles looking for love are Tiffany Franco (“90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way”), Chantel Everett (“90 Day Fiancé,” “The Family Chantel”), Colt Johnson (“90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?”), Rob Warne (“90 Day: The Last Resort”) and “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days” stars Cortney Reardanz, Usman “SojaBoy” Umar and exes Tim Malcolm and Jeniffer Tarazona.
Per TLC, the “90 Day: Hunt for Love” cast members “have loved, lost and learned a few lessons along the way,” over a few “90 Day” spinoff appearances each. While they all may have split from the partners they joined the franchise with, that hasn’t stopped any of the singles from popping up in other TLC shows, from documenting their dating lives to sharing insights during recap and reunion shows.
The series starts off big, staging a masquerade ball to get the romances rolling, encouraging flirty connections among the cast — and the show’s description promises that it will bring the drama: “From flirty first impressions to late-night confessions, expect shocking hook-ups and unexpected pairings.”
The official trailer for the series is a wild ride. Late-night hot tub make-outs, night-vision camera footage of couples getting to know each other and sun-soaked, romantic dates show just how quickly these “90 Day” alums can find love if they’re looking for it. Initial saucy connections may just be too good to be true, as the trailer also highlights clips from “90 Day: Hunt for Love,” where lust has evolved into greed. Jeniffer has eyes for more than one man at the resort and as Rob puts it,
‘90 Day: Hunt for Love’
“All is fair in love and war. Sometimes people get hurt.”
Drinks and tears flow freely and someone will even be carted away in an ambulance. This series has everything that a dating competition show lover could ask for. For even more juice, the companion show, “Hunt for Love: Between the Sheets,” airs immediately after new episodes of “90 Day: Hunt for Love,” with exclusive cast member commentary on the romances in Mexico and extra footage that didn’t make the cut.
The “90 Day: Hunt for Love” cast members have been mainstays of TLC’s K-1 visa-centric series, but only one had their own dedicated show all about her (and her former husband). Chantel starred in five seasons of “The Family Chantel,” which chronicled her life with her Dominican husband, Pedro, and their family and friends in Atlanta before the pair filed for divorce in 2022.
Tiffany, who joined the franchise with the first season of “90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way,” packed up her life in Maryland when she fell in love on vacation. While staying in South Africa, Tiffany met Ronald, a local. After she moved herself and her son to be with him, the pair married, had a daughter and ultimately separated.
Colt, who has had three relationships — two marriages — documented through the 90 Day franchise, is now ready to look for love again. First seen in the sixth season of “90 Day Fiancé,” Colt married Brazilian model Larissa Dos Santos Lima and divorced seven months later. His latest marriage to Las Vegas native Vanessa
Screen Scramble
Guerra lasted three years, but their separation sent him back out on the dating scene and straight to Tulum.
Real estate agent Cortney shared the experience of her short-lived romance with Spanish actor Antonio Millon in the first season of “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days,” before appearing in “90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined” with another beau. Now back on the prowl, Cortney may not be looking for lasting love, but she is up for a good time. “I was planning on getting, like, whitegirl wasted the whole retreat,” Cortney revealed in the series’ trailer.
Then, there are the exes on the beach! Tim and Jeniffer, who did not work out during the second season of “90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days,” are both in Tulum for the new dating show. Rekindling the spark they once shared seems unlikely, but anything is possible with TLC cameras around.
“90 Day: The Last Resort” was just that for Rob and his estranged wife, Sophie Sierra. The pair split during the show’s recommitment ceremony, proving things between them were over and paving the way for Rob’s path to the new dating show.
Last but not least is the Nigerian hip-hop artist Usman. He was one side of a storied “90 Day” love triangle between two American women, both quite a few years his senior. The details of that saga are something to behold, but that’s all in the past now and Usman is ready for love on the beach.
Don’t miss the series premiere of “90 Day: Hunt for Love” Monday, May 26, on TLC.

The competition is hotter than ever as remaining contestants sharpen their knives and prepare to face the heat in “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing.” The competition series concludes its exciting second season with a thrilling twohour finale, airing back-to-back Sunday, May 25, on Food Network.
Hosted by renowned chefs Michael Symon (“Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out”) and Esther Choi (“Heat Eaters”), this culinary marathon pushes 24 chefs — ranging from restaurant chefs to Food Network veterans — through 24 hours of intense culinary battles that challenge their technique, creativity and, above all else, their stamina. Only one competitor will endure to become the Last Chef Standing.
This two-part finale sees hosts Michael and Esther guide the five remaining contestants through one last familiar curveball before dishing out their final task: to create an elevated breakfast, lunch and dinner — all while battling against exhaustion. After nearly a full day in the kitchen, it all comes down to these final plates.
The judges for the final competition — culinary stars Antonia Lofaso (“Beachside Brawl”), Graham Elliot (“MasterChef Junior”) and Jet Tila (“Family Restaurant Rivals”) — will determine which chef possesses the talent, resilience and execution to win the coveted title of Last Chef Standing and take home a grand prize of $75,000.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO
“The Better Sister” - Season 1 Based on the novel of the same name by Alafair Burke, the new mystery drama “The Better Sister” makes its debut Thursday, May 29, on Prime Video. Spanning eight episodes, the series centers on Chloe (Jessica Biel, “Candy”) and Nicky (Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games,” 2012), two estranged sisters who could not be more different. While Chloe is a high-profile media executive with her handsome husband, Adam (Corey Stoll, “Billions”), and teenage son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan, “That ‘90s Show”), Nicky is just trying to get by and stay clean. When Adam is murdered, the sisters are brought back together by some shocking revelations in the case. As Chloe and Nicky attempt to uncover the truth about Adam’s brutal death, they’ll have to work their way through a tangled web of family secrets. Written for television by showrunners Olivia Milch (“Ocean’s 8,” 2018) and Regina Corrado (“Sons of Anarchy”), “The Better Sister” is directed by Leslie Hope (“Lost in
Space”), Craig Gillespie (“Physical”) and Azazel Jacobs (“His Three Daughters,” 2023). Kim Dickens (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Bobby Naderi (“How I Got There,” 2022), Gabriel Sloyer (“Griselda”), Gloria Reuben (“Mr. Robot”), Matthew Modine (“Stranger Things”) and Lorraine Toussaint (“The Equalizer”) also star.
“The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy” - Season 2 Slice into a new adventure with Season 2 of “The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy” when it premieres Tuesday, May 27, on Prime Video. Working together, this unstoppable duo tackles everything from anxiety-eating parasites to illegal time loops and deep space STIs. But, when Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak take on a highly dangerous and potentially groundbreaking case in Season 1, they risk putting their careers — and all of existence — in jeopardy. Now, doctors Sleech and Klak “relish the fame of their recent success until a cyborg journalist starts digging a little too deep into Sleech’s past” (per Prime Video). With a voice cast that also includes Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), singer Sam Smith (“Unholy Feat. Kim Petras”), Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,” 2011), Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll”), Gary Anthony Williams (“Boston Legal”), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City”), Bowen Yang (“Awk-

WHAT’S NEW ON APPLE TV+
“Bono: Stories of Surrender” Touted as an “immersive” and “vivid reimagining” of Bono’s critically acclaimed one-man stage show, “Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief…” by Apple, the featurelength documentary “Bono: Stories of Surrender” premieres Friday, May 30, on Apple TV+. Providing audiences with an exclusive look into his life, U2 frontman Bono (“Beautiful Day”) brings fans along on a remarkable journey through a slice of his life. Getting personal about the loved ones who have grounded him and pushed him forward as an activist and rock star, the documentary intertwines intimate interviews and videos with exciting, never-beforeseen footage from the Stories of Surrender tour, as well as special performances of some of U2’s most iconic hits. From director Andrew Dominik (“This Much I Know to Be True,” 2022), “Bono: Stories of Surrender” is executive produced by Bono himself, alongside Kelly McNamara (“V-U2-UV an Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas,” 2024) and Jennifer Pitcher (“Some Assembly Required”).
WHAT’S NEW ON NETFLIX “Dept. Q” - Season 1 Sometimes, all one can do is grab on to any chance that’s given and make the most of it. That sentiment drives DCI Carl Morck (Matthew Goode, “A Discovery of Witches”) in the British crime drama “Dept. Q,” which makes its debut Thursday, May 29, on Netflix. “A brilliant cop but a terrible colleague,” says Netflix, Morck faces his final career straw when a shooting leaves one person dead and his partner paralyzed. Taken off the regular force and exiled to the basement, Morck is now to spend his days as the sole member of Department Q, a newly formed cold case unit — which is more PR stunt for their failing, under-resourced police force than anything of substance. However, never one to back down from a challenge, Morck takes his new assignment seriously, assembling a team of fellow outcasts who have nothing left to lose. When the cold case of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago lands on their doorstep and begins to heat back up, Morck and his team bring their A game — and their bad attitudes — with them as they work to solve the case once and for all. From writer and director Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”), the series is executive produced by Rob Bullock (“The Night Manager”), Scott Frank (“Logan,” 2017) and Andy Harries (“The Crown”). “Dept. Q” also stars Chloe Pirrie (“Under The Banner of Heaven”), Alexej Manvelov (“Top Dog”), Kelly Macdonald (“Line of Duty”), Leah Byrne (“Call The Midwife”) and Catriona Stirling (“We Were the Lucky Ones”).

Election Year
"The Fall Out"
By Adam Thomlison TV Media
Q: I heard a rumor that Janet Leigh would never take a shower again after “Psycho.”
Is that true?
A: Unfortunately for “Psycho” (1960) star Janet Leigh, it’s hard to entirely avoid showering. But she did her best after making that movie.
“I stopped taking showers and I take baths, only baths,” she said in a 1995 memoir, “Psycho: Behind the Scenes of the Classic Thriller.” When she had to stay somewhere that only had a shower, she said, “I make sure the doors and windows of the house are locked, and I leave the bathroom door open and shower curtain open. I’m always facing the door, watching, no matter where the shower head is.” If that seems like an extreme approach to cleanliness, you probably weren’t traumatized by “Psycho’s” famous shower scene — in which Leigh’s character is slashed to death through her motel room’s shower curtain.
It’s more famous now as an often-jokey cultural reference, but at the time it was a shocking thing to see on-screen. Many besides Leigh suddenly saw showering as a risky activity.
But even so, Leigh, who died in 2004 at the age of 77, was certainly glad she took the role. It remains the thing she’s best known for and left her with the honorary title of “original scream queen” — “scream queens” being actresses best known, or at least best suited, for playing a particular
kind of horror film heroine. It’s a role her daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, would be associated with as well after her breakout role in 1978’s “Halloween.”
Q: I love the new show “Shifting Gears.” I can’t figure out where I know Gabe from, but I know I recognize that goofy smile. What else has be been in?
A: There’s an alternate universe that split off somewhere in the mid-’00s where you would never be asking that question. Because Seann William Scott, who plays Gabe on the new ABC sitcom “Shifting Gears,” would be too famous.
Scott seemed poised for movie stardom back then, having broken out as Stifler in “American Pie” (1999) and its sequels. He also costarred in some other era-defining hits, such as the teen horror “Final Destination” (2000) and the comedy “Dude, Where’s My Car” (2000).
The studios started building projects around him, such as the martial arts action flick “Bulletproof Monk” (2003) and a bigscreen adaptation of the classic series “The Dukes of Hazzard” (2005). But these starring vehicles didn’t pan out the way the studios expected, so Scott started transitioning back to smaller, supporting roles.
That also means doing more TV — something he shied away from in his heyday. But in more recent years, he was brought in to add some star power to the third season of the “Lethal Weapon” series, which was on the cusp of cancelation. And now he has “Shifting Gears,” a pretty straightforward sitcom starring Tim Allen (“Home Improvement”) and Kat Dennings (“2 Broke Girls”).
Scott still moonlights with film, though. He has two new indie films currently in post-production, awaiting distribution: “Bad Man,” an action comedy about a state police officer who butts heads with a small-town deputy, and the horror film “Dolly.”
Q: What ever happened to the actress who played Astrid on “Fringe”? I’ve seen the other stars around since, but not her.
A: The devoted fanbase of sci-fi show “Fringe,” which aired on Fox
2016. More recently, she was promoted from occasional guest to series co-star for the third season of ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” playing Dr. Carly Lever. But it’s worth noting that acting isn’t the only iron Nicole has in the fire (and she might even appreciate that old-timey domestic arts metaphor). She has branded her official site, jasika.com, as her “digital craft room,” showcasing her various sewing, knitting and upholstering projects, and more — she briefly mentions the fact that she also has “a successful ca-

from 2008 to 2013, had a hard time when the show was canceled. But they’ve been comforted to see the stars in other stuff since.
Stars such as Joshua Jackson (now on the hit series “Doctor Odyssey”) and Anna Torv (now on “The Last Of Us”) have been easy to follow — not so much for Jasika Nicole.
Nicole played Astrid on “Fringe,” one of the show’s four stars. But she’s had a bit more trouble finding equally juicy roles since.
She mostly pops up as a recurring star these days, but on some pretty major shows.
For example, she had an ongoing engagement as Kim Munoz on “Scandal” between 2013 and
reer in television, film, audio and theater,” but that’s about all the space she gives to her screen work.
Having a passionate sideline like that means she can be a little pickier with the screen projects she does. And she is still doing some — she recently wrapped a short film, called “There Is No Antimemetics Division,” with director-writer Adria Lang. The two previously worked together on a 2023 episode of the remake of “Fantasy Island.”
