A bump in the road Commission rejects request that would help pave the way for business to build asphalt plant near city limits BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5529 @rj_rodgers

DIXON – The city planning and zoning commission unanimously rejected a proposal for Martin and Company Excavating to build an asphalt plant at its Dixon quarry Thursday. The proposal requests a special use permit to rezone 15.5 acres from agricultural to heavy industrial at Wastone Quarry, a nearly 177-acre quarry at 603 Rock Island Road that sits just

outside the city limits near the southwest end of Dixon. Commission chairwoman Josie Whaley said she thought the most prominent issue with the project is because the property is technically in the county’s jurisdiction, the city would not have any authority with the company. “The concern I have is that, in reality, the city would have no control,” she said. “They should consider being annexed first and revisit this.” ASPHALT continued on A44

Hurry, hurry, hurry – step right up!

AMBOY – He’s been taking a little off the top for nearly 60 years now. You’d think he might want to give his fingers and feet a rest. But Don Wittenauer, who turns 85 in August, plans to keep cutting hair – and conversing with his clientele – as long as he can. To make it easier for him, about a year and a half ago, he closed up his Amboy shop, where he had plied his craft for more than 54 years, and moved a chair and all his barbershop accoutrements into the basement of his home on Shaw Road, on the outskirts of town.

OBITUARIES......... A4 OPINION............... A6 POLICE................. A2

“Working out of my basement is pretty nice,” Wittenauer said. “I don’t know how long I plan to keep cutting hair. I really want to keep in touch with the public, so it’s hard to say.” Wittenauer got his barber’s license in 1958 and opened shop in Dixon, but after 2 years he moved it to Amboy. He worked more than 60 hours a week when he first got started, but now that he’s getting a little older, he’s cut back to a little more than 30 hours a week. Before it all began, he served 4 years in the Air Force, from November 1951 to November 1955. The airman first class was a welder for Uncle Sam. When his stint was over, he went to barber school in Peoria. When it comes to barbering, he’s a man’s man. No ladies ‘dos, thank you, and no shampooing or styling. “I’m a barber, and I cut men’s hair,” he said. “I’m not a hair stylist.” CLIPPER continued on A44 5
