DIXON | BAY VALLEY WATER RATE NEGOTIATIONS

Code prohibits hookup to well Company said it would switch if rate cuts not OK’d BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529

DIXON – As it turns out, Bay Valley Foods, the city’s largest water customer, must vault a few more hurdles if it wants to dig its own well. Todd LeBlanc, a vice president with

the company who is responsible for the Dixon plant, told the City Council this month that if the city didn’t agree to Bay Valley’s proposed water rate reduction, switching to well water made more sense. Such a switch, it appears, is easier said than done. According to city code, “No person shall,

within the city limits, be permitted to drill their own well when said person’s land is within two hundred feet ... of the public water supply.” The Bay Valley Foods plant, 820 Palmyra St., is within 200 feet of the city’s water.

City’s No. 1 water customer wants water, sewer rates lowered, frozen.

ROCK FALLS

Fire leaves family homeless

Donated land must be used for pavilion Parcel along riverfront next to site of new hotel BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570

ROCK FALLS – Downtown land recently donated to the city must be used as a recreational site, which fits nicely with overall plans for riverfront development. The family of the late Doris and Louis Celletti wants the city to build a pavilion or similar structure near the south bank of the Rock River as a lookout point to observe waterfowl and other wildlife. The family also asked that the site have easy access to any nature trails planned by the city, and that memorial signage be put up as a tribute to the Cellettis. The city officially accepted the donation and its conditions at the council’s Dec. 16 meeting. Alderman Glen Kuhlemier said the parcel is a perfect fit for the city’s riverfront plans. “The land is adjacent to the area to be developed near the site of the new hotel,” Kuhlemier said. “The city has agreed to make certain improvements and intends to uphold all of the conditions of the gift.” The parcel is the first lot east of the hotel site on East Second Street. The city announced plans on May 6 for the $6.1 million hotel project in the RB&W District. Construction was expected to begin this summer, but the timetable was moved back.

DIXON – It was about 4:45 a.m. Dec. 16 when Tina Reyes woke to the distant sound of someone knocking at her door. When she opened her eyes and looked out the window of her family ‘s mobile home, she saw flames. The knock at her door was Ken Gray, 50, who lives in the neighborhood. He

To donate to the Reyes family’s cause, visit gofundme.com/j340qk was passing their home on his way to work when, through the rainy night, he saw flames shooting out of Reyes’ van. It was parked just a couple of feet from the home, he said, so he knew he had to try to wake up whoever was home.

He banged on the door and rang the doorbell for about 5 minutes before the Reyeses finally rose. When they did, a groggy Tina at first didn’t realize it was their home that was catching fire. Husband Victor took charge, asking Ken to watch their 4-year-old grandson, Korbin, while they called 911. FIRE CONTINUED ON A5
