Oregon mother accused of suffocating her son wants a new judge to oversee murder case

An Oregon woman accused of suffocating her 7-year-old son in 2021 is asking for a different judge to preside over her case as it continues to move through the judicial system.

Sarah Safranek, 38, through her attorney, Ogle County Public Defender Kathleen Isley, filed the motion asking to replace Associate Judge Anthony Peska on Sept. 12.

Safranek is accused of killing her son, Nathaniel Burton, in the family’s Oregon home in February 2021. She is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. She was arrested April 21, 2021, was indicted May 4, 2021, and pleaded not guilty May 6, 2021.

She has been held in the Ogle County Jail since her arrest.

“Judge Peska is so prejudiced against her [Safranek] that she cannot receive a fair trial,” according to the Sept. 12 defense motion.

Judge John Redington was the judge for Safranek’s case, presiding over many hearings and delivering pre-trial rulings, before he retired in 2024.

Chief Judge John “Ben” Roe entered an order in July 2024 assigning the case to Peska upon Redington’s retirement.

Wednesday’s hearing was the first time in more than a year that Safranek appeared in court as some pre-trial rul-

ings, made by Redington, were under appeal.

Sept. 17’s hearing was the first time Peska had presided over a hearing for Safranek.

Isley’s motion asks that Safranek’s case be assigned to another judge.

Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten filed a response to Isley’s motion, arguing that the defense motion was “untimely” and had missed the 10-day window to ask for a substitute judge.

A hearing to argue both motions is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in front of Roe.

Safanek’s jury trial was removed from the court calendar in July 2024 following a motion by prosecutors who argued that some rulings made by Redington limited the evidence they wanted to present to jurors. They argued Redington’s decision had “impaired” their ability to proceed with first-degree murder charges.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock filed an appeal July 10, 2024, nine days after Redington ruled on several motions in limine filed by the defense and prosecutors.

Motions in limine determine whether certain evidence may be presented to the jury. They are commonly entered and argued before a trial begins, allowing evidentiary questions to be decided by the judge. Motions in limine in the Safranek case have been sealed and are not viewable to the public.

Bison, birds, plants all part of Nachusa Grasslands’ fall festival

The Nachusa Grasslands was teeming with life Saturday, Sept. 20, with the 4,100-acre site showcasing its flora and fauna during the annual Autumn on the Prairie fall festival.

Hundreds of people visited the event on Lowden Road, southeast of Oregon near Franklin Grove, as volunteers and staff offered tours and standing displays where everyone could learn more about the prairie and its inhabitants.

More than a dozen guided hiking tours focusing on everything Grasslands – wildflowers, grassland birds, plants – complemented a tent where kids could see aspects of the prairie ecosystem and touch hides and seed pods.

Friends of the Nachusa Grasslands President Bernie Buccholz led almost 20 people on the “Prairie Meets Savanna” hike, explaining how former cropland is being restored alongside the oak savanna, which borders sandstone rock outcroppings and a recovering wetland.

Other events helped explain the complex interactions that create and maintain the prairie, highlighting how all the plants, insects, and animals make Nachusa ”a remarkable and unique place”.

A live birds of prey display, offered by the Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab and Education, also gave visitors an opportunity to see owls, falcons and hawks up close.

But the big draw was the prairie’s biggest resident, the bison.

Volunteer guides rode with trailers full of visitors out onto the prairie for a chance to see the bison up close.

“There’s a very big bull right there. He probably weighs around 1,700 pounds,” one of the guides told his trailer full of camera-clicking visitors.

With a little encouragement from edible treats, a large portion of the 100or-so herd – including bulls, cows and their calves – politely watched as a steady stream of tractors and trucks pulled the trailers past them around 250 yards west from the visitor center.

The 4,100-acre Nachusa Grasslands is owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy.

The Friends of Nachusa Grasslands is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2008 by volunteers dedicated to providing for the long–term care and management of the grasslands.

The Grasslands “consists of large remnant prairie, woodlands and wet -

lands being reconnected through habitat restoration to create one of the largest and most biologically diverse grasslands in Illinois,” the Friends of Nachusa Grasslands website says.

“Working hand in hand with conservancy staff, a dynamic community of volunteer stewards collect and plant seeds; manage invasive species; repair wetlands; and conduct controlled burns in order to preserve, protect and share this precious endangered ecosystem.”

Autumn on the Prairie takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the third Saturday in September. Next year’s date is Sept. 19. For information, visit nachusagrasslands.org.

Trump Derangement Syndrome explained

Trump derangement syndrome is an affliction of mostly the leftists in the country. TDS can be defined as a personal behavior where one views everything that Trump does as bad. For instance, if the current president discovered a cure for cancer, ended all the wars around the world, or eliminated poverty, many of our leftist brethren would find negativity in these accomplishments, insisting that he should also have cured heart disease or diabetes.

TDS has its origin with the columnist and psychiatrist, Charles Krauthammer, who coined the term Bush derangement syndrome during the George W. Bush administration. He defined the syndrome as “the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies.” The term has evolved from “Obama Derangement Syndrome” (2008) and “Clinton Derangement Syndrome” (2016), resulting in today’s TDS.

According to psychologist Dr. Brad Brenner of the Therapy Group DC, TDS

“is a partisan insult, not a psychiatric diagnosis” based on his review of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM5). Just because TDS is not listed as a disorder does not necessarily mean it does not exist. For instance, in DSM-5, the diagnosis of “gender identity disorder” was changed to “gender dysphoria” in 2013, making it a diagnosis with less of a stigma. At that time, there were no breakthroughs in treating this disorder, suggesting that the change in DSM-5 could be characterized as political in nature.

A bill in the Ohio legislature was introduced to require the National Institute of Health to study TDS concerning this toxic state of mind that has divided

the country and has led to violence across the country, including assassination attempts on the current president. The research goal is to identify the basic cause and identify solutions. The Minnesota Legislature is reviewing a bill to classify TDS as a mental illness and add it to the amended statutes as a legal definition. It would be interesting to see if the definition of TDS is included in the next version of DSM if this legislation passes.

Dr. Brenner said that TDS may be taking a toll on a person’s physiology as indicated by these four characteristics. Struggling to disconnect from political news might lead to irritability, so take a step back.

Take control over what information is coming to you. For example, when scrolling through Facebook, if you pause and read about a particular topic, more content related to that subject matter will be sent to you. If you stop at a specific political page, then expect more political posts to be sent to you.

If political conversation increases another person’s anger, don’t engage. Political discussions may result in the loss of friendships with others, so Brenner advises choosing how much energy one desires to invest in these discussions.

Finally, if a person experiences headaches or trouble sleeping, these are signs that political stress is taking a toll. Brenner offers three guideposts:

• Be self-aware by noticing how you react to political discussions, such as changes in mood, a racing heart and “spiraling” thoughts.

• Manage your emotions by stepping away from the politics and doing something enjoyable like taking a walk, cooking, going for a swim – anything that brings calm to your psychological well-being.

• Talk to a psychiatrist.

Doesn’t sound pro-family to me

To the Editor:

Our Congressman, Darin LaHood, of the 16th congressional district, recently sent out a newsletter where the “Big Beautiful Bill” was described as the “most pro-family piece of legislation in history.” And he was glad to support it.

How does a bill that cuts SNAP benefits become pro-family? Struggling families need help. Cutting SNAP benefits is going to hurt families.

How is cutting Medicaid going to benefit families? Again, families that are struggling need Medicaid to keep their families healthy. Without Medicaid payments, some smaller, rural hospitals may find it difficult to provide medical services to all the people in their area. Those payments are important because hospitals will not turn away poor people. Without reimbursement, how will those hospitals survive?

And since he is boasting about protecting families, how does having armed, masked men rounding up citizens and

taking them into custody without warrants, often without cause, and without due process, help families? In fact, it hurts families as news stories frequently tell of husbands or wives taken away, leaving their families without both parents or grandparents. This is not helping families.

And exactly how does targeting Haitian immigrants for removal and returning them to Haiti benefit families? Haiti is in chaos, killings and rapes occur daily, yet our government is sending people back. Women and children. People who came here to escape the violence.

This “Big Beautiful Bill” does not benefit us.

It benefits the billionaires and multimillionaires.

Those who supported it should be ashamed.

And those who remain silent when men and women are rounded up based on skin color are not representing the values and morals of the United States of America.

The Good Place To the Editor:

The Good Place. Within a day’s drive of Ogle County, you can visit five different examples of utopian communities, all established between 1839 and 1857. They are the Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Nauvoo, Illinois; the Jansonists of Bishop Hill, Illinois; the Trappist monks of New Melleray Abbey, Dubuque, Iowa; the French Icarians, Corning, Iowa; and the Community of New Harmony, New Harmony, Indiana, established in 1814.

This part of the Midwest was certainly fertile ground for the Utopian experiment. The idea of Utopia, meaning “good place,” originated with Sir Thomas More and his book titled “Utopia” in 1516.

In his book he painted a picture of a community that possessed highly desirable qualities in religious, social and political customs.

What is a utopia? It is an intervention

of the imagination at a time of transition or crisis that suggests alternative values to the current ideology and offers the possibility of a new kind of society. Is this such a time? Are we still fertile ground for such an effort? Have we reached a time where enough people are discontent with what they are discontent about? Is the current ideology failing to inspire and influence striving for a better life? Can a utopian imagination lead us to a place where we have not yet been but are willing to go towards?

A utopia is not a dream or a wish of “only if,” but the result of every human act which is directed towards the construction of a more just society.

For me this would lead to a society that cherishes liberation for all and the development of a culture that is free of social, economic and political inequality. We would become a freer, more human humankind. I think that is worth working for.

Milledgeville pulls away from Polo in Battle of the Blacktop

A defensive slugfest turned into a one-sided second half in the annual Battle for the Blacktop game between Milledgeville and Polo.

After the Marcos scored on the first drive of the second half, the Missiles scored three unanswered touchdowns after a fourth-down stop early in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 28-6 victory Friday night in Polo.

Milledgeville (4-0) used big plays to reach the end zone. Kyson Francis threw scoring strikes of 33 and 49 yards to Karter Livengood and 18 yards to Spencer Nye. Evan Schenck added a 42-yard touchdown run with 1:52 to play, breaking several tackles after he looked to be stopped about five yards downfield.

“The first half started off rough; I missed some wide-open targets. In the second half, I got comfortable and started throwing the ball better,” said Francis, who finished 7-for-14 passing for 161 yards and an interception. “My receivers run great routes, and I can always trust them to get open.”

then capped an eight-play drive with a 1-yard TD run with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

The Marcos then forced a three-andout and drove 40 yards in 10 plays, but JT Stephenson’s fourth-down completion to Mumford came up 1 yard shy of the first down, and the Missiles took over.

Francis capped a 13-play, 63-yard drive with the 18-yard TD pass to Nye on fourth-and-8 to make it 16-6 with 5:48 left in the game. It was the second scoring pass on fourth down; the Missiles converted on fourth-and-22 with the 33-yard TD pass late in the first quarter for an 8-0 lead.

“That fourth-down stop was huge,” Francis said. “We can really keep our composure, and that’s a big part of our team. We never get nervous in those big situations.”

Mumford led the Marcos with 16 carries for 53 yards and five catches for 78 yards, and Stephenson finished 7-for-19 passing for 89 yards and a pair of picks. Polo had just two first downs and 29 total yards at halftime before its two third-quarter drives started to swing the momentum.

“You kind of hate to see that happen, because we did play a great game, and the score doesn’t indicate that. But we’ve just got to learn from what we did wrong and hope we can make improvements.”
