Legacy of giving back built Dixon woman ‘touched a lot of lives around the Sauk Valley’ BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529
DIXON – Jane Marshall’s legacy in Dixon will be more than just the family business. Marshall, 88, died on Friday, Dec.
12, 2014, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon, after a short illness. As much as the her name is connected to the Marshall Salon Services, her legacy extends to civic involvement and volunteerism,
two things that have been passed to the generations of Marshalls that have followed. She spent 11 years on the Dixon School Board, including several as the board president, and was involved with the addition to
what’s now Reagan Middle School. She was active with Dixon Theatre Renovation Inc. and spent 28 years as a member of the KSB Hospital Pink Ladies.

alent and preparation can get us only so far. It’s at the point of exhaustion where inner strength defines us. Michael Jordan comes to mind. His physical gifts were trumped only by his insatiable ferocity. I think of Nelson Mandela, the relentless champion of philanthropy. How about Mick Jagger? What fuels his tireless pursuit of “Satisfaction”? It also doesn’t hurt to be a little pants-on-head crazy. See: exceptional character actors Joaquin Phoenix, Danny DeVito and Christian Bale. Sterling resident Rick Rodgers is a devastating combination of crackers and courageous. And that couldn’t be more of a compliment. I mean, the guy has diligently braved rain, sleet, snow and polar vortexes to

deliver mail in Rock Falls for 30 years. Oh, and he elected to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112, and then run 26.2. But wait. There’s more. A week later, he went back for more. Sure, it was just 1,500 meters, 40 kilometers and a 10K, respectively. But seeing as how, just 1 week prior, he’d pushed his body to its limits for a shade under half a day, let’s cut the 61-year-old some slack. DELIVERY CONTINUED ON A3

STERLING – The Beautiful You Boutique was having a typical quiet Sunday when about 10 customers, who had gathered in the parking lot, flooded the store. Members of Amazing Grace Church in Sterling, they were there to spend some money, part of the church’s Random Acts of Christmas Kindness (RACK) program. Owner Amanda Jacobs didn’t know they were coming. “It was just a very, very nice surprise,” she said, still searching for words after the church members had shopped for about 10 minutes. “I was just so surprised.” The church members looked at scarves and jewelry. One was in search of a camouflage wallet. The visit – or cash mob – was a way to give back and support a local business, said Sue Nobis, the church member who organized the day.
