Schools carrying out vote process Carroll County files with county clerk for Nov. 4 ballot BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570

The boards of seven of Whiteside County’s nine school districts have approved resolutions for a sales tax increase and sent

the necessary paperwork to the regional schools superintendent. Regional Superintendent Bob Sondgeroth said he had received petitions from the Sterling, Rock Falls Elementary, Rock Falls High

School, Montmorency, River Bend, Prophetstown-LyndonTampico, and East-Coloma-Nelson school districts. Those districts represent more than 80 percent of the student population in the county’s

schools. A simple majority of 51 percent was needed to get the referendum on the November ballot for a sales tax of 1 percent on most retail sales.

Report: But without expansion, region’s sites have 15 years left BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529

Breaking down the numbers

Without future expansions, landfills in the Sauk Valley have between 14 and 31 years of life left in them. The northwest region of the state, which includes Lee, Ogle, Whiteside and Carroll counties, has the second-shortest lifespan in the state at 15, according to a recently released Illinois Environmental Protection Agency report. However, the region also has the largest portion of available space in the state, as of Jan. 1, with 23.86 percent, the report said. The next-largest portion is 20.85 percent for east-central Illinois, which includes Champaign County. LANDFILLS CONTINUED ON A4

STERLING – Tom Cross, the Republican candidate for state treasurer, said the office he’s seeking should be viewed as one that can help turn Illinois around. Cross, R-Oswego, was elected as a state representative in 1992 and House Republican leader in 2002. He’s running against Mike Frerichs, D-Champaign, for Tom the position that Cross will be vacated by Dan Rutherford. In an interview with Sauk Valley Media on Tuesday, he said the treasurer is in a position to force the General Assembly to pass a balanced budget; can take a role in rooting out corruption in the state; and create more transparency about the state’s true finances, in addition to the traditional role to invest the state’s money.
