DIXON – The 29,000 real estate tax bills recently mailed to Lee County property owners should return about $57 million, the county treasurer said. Once collected, the money will be distributed to Lee County governmental agencies, like cities and school districts, county Treasurer John Fritts said. The taxes are payable in two installments – due July 11 and Sept. 5 – but for the first time, Lee County residents will be able to make weekly or monthly payments, Fritts said. The new payment options address a need, he said, as some Illinois counties consider moving from two installments to four. Allowing for payments on a weekly or monthly basis could be a middle ground to increasing the installments, Fritts said, something he doesn’t support. He fears that increased installments would drag out the collection to a year-round process. The tax bills were mailed May 29, Fritts said, and if residents haven’t received them by now, they should call the county treasurer’s office. Failure to receive a bill doesn’t exempt property owners from consequences of nonpayment. PAYMENTS CONTINUED ON A4
