SERVING DIXON AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1851

DIXON | KREIDER SERVICES

Pooling pediatric resources New center to bring behavioral experts to a single location BY MATT MENCARINI mmencarini@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5529

DIXON – A grant will allow Kreider Services to open a facility aimed at making specialized

pediatric services easily accessible for Sauk Valley families. The Pediatric Developmental Center could be open by the end of 2014 or early 2015, said Kreider’s Greg Gates, who wrote the grant that was submitted to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in December. Kreider was told on April 24 that it was awarded the implementa-

tion grant, which will amount to $900,000 over 3 years – $300,000 a year – to complete what it started with a rural health planning grant from 2012, Gates said. The planning grant was for about $65,000, said Laura Watters, Kreider’s director of autism and day services, adding that there were some matching funds from Kreider involved with that grant.

The center’s goal is to “make specialized pediatric services more accessible and decrease the time for children to receive accurate diagnosis and treatment,” according to a Kreider news release. The Pediatric Developmental Center will serve children 18 and younger living in Lee, Ogle, Carroll and Whiteside counties, the release said,

“who exhibit developmental, emotional, social or behavioral concerns.” The idea for a center like this, where specialists in a variety of fields are all in one building, began to take shape in January 2008, Watters said, when Kreider was doing screenings for autism. PEDIATRIC CONTINUED ON A4

Investigators try to fill in gaps in muder trial BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521

ROCK ISLAND – On June 28, 2008, Matt Johnson was spending the night at his girlfriend’s apartment. His son was there, too. They were going to have a movie night.

Follow on Twitter Sauk Valley Media reporter Christi Warren (@SeaWarren) is tweeting live updates from the courtroom. Their neighbors, Brock Branson, Kilynna Blake, and her 2-year-old son, Dayan, had the same idea, and around 9 p.m., they came over to his girlfriend’s apartment to check out their movie collection. Finding noth-

ing they wanted to borrow, they soon left. Matt’s girlfriend at the time, Chasity Gibbons, was friends with Kilynna. The two would check in on each other; their children would play together. In fact, Chasity had already seen Kilynna a number of times that day before she dropped in that night to borrow a movie.

MORRISON – If you’re looking to work at the yet-to-open federal prison in Thomson, you’re welcome in Morrison, officials say. In fact, one of the menu options on the city’s website is for Bureau of Prisons employees, where the city touts the local school system, Mayor hospital, parks Everett Pannier and historic homes. “For a personalized tour of our city, please contact our friendly staff at City Hall. ... Mayor Everett Pannier will be happy to escort you throughout our beautiful, historic city,” the website’s text reads. The city posted that section to its website only a couple of weeks ago. At this early stage, Pannier has yet to get any takers.
