ASHTON – A man walking along railroad tracks in Ashton on Thursday died after being struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train, officials said.

Andrew Jonathen Ruiz, 22, of Ashton was pronounced dead by the Lee County Coroner’s Office at the scene of the accident near Douglas Avenue. The accident happened at 2:50 p.m., according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. When officials arrived, they found a man lying alongside the tracks. DIXON – Mayor Jim Burke is making what could be his last big push for boat docks before his fourth and final term expires at the end of April. If the boat docks are built with city money, some concerns raised by city staff at a budget workshop this week will have to be addressed. Burke previously suggested the city use $160,000 of its video gambling revenue to help build docks on the Rock River near Heritage Crossing. “I think it’d be a Mayor great use of taking Jim Burke that video gambling money,” Burke said at a budget workshop Monday. The project was among the expenses the city discussed during the final budget meeting, before the budget is placed on file. Burke has been a longtime advocate of boat docks and included them in the list of final projects he wanted to accomplish or get in motion before his 16 years as mayor end. Burke isn’t seeking reelection this spring. DOCKS CONTINUED ON A2
