Chief wants body cameras Some local officials not convinced of benefits BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521 @SeaWarren

DIXON – If Police Chief Danny Langloss gets his way, his officers will be wearing body cameras within the

next year or so. The August shooting death of Michael Brown in St. Louis has spurred a nationwide debate over whether police should be required to wear them. In Illinois, the Senate is considering legislation to mandate their use.

In Dixon, where fiscal year 2015-16 budget talks are just getting underway, Langloss has asked the city for $7,200 to buy eight officer-worn cameras, which cost about $900 each. BODY CAMERAS CONTINUED ON A4

Valerie Sigafus, a registered nurse and assistant director of invasive cardiology at CGH Medical Center, explains the window a heart attack patient has to receive treatment, which prompted CGH to open a second cardiac catheterization lab. “With one lab, if someone was already in there, you can’t just stop in the middle of a procedure,” she said.

Hospital adding second cardiac cath center to meet need BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

STERLING – Time is of the essence when it comes to treating heart problems. Because of the important role the cardiac catheterization lab has played in saving lives at CGH Medical Center, a second cath

lab will soon open. CGH does between 100 and 120 cardiac cath procedures each month. Cardiac health professionals are driven by what is commonly referred to as door-toballoon time – the time it takes for patients to get treatment right after a heart attack. LAB CONTINUED ON A2

Community open house The new Cardiac Catheterization and Cardio Labs will be open for tours from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at CGH Medical Center, 100 E. LeFevre Road in Sterling. Visitors can meet the hospital’s staff of interventional cardiologists – Drs. Paul Maxwell, Thomas Kurian, Eyas Youssef, and Steven Mackay. Light refreshments will be available.

STERLING – Parents in the Sauk Valley are being asked to take a survey on the culture and climate of area schools. From now until March 13, teachers, parents and students across Illinois can participate in the third annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials survey. The survey allows parents to share their thoughts on the important elements of their child’s school. SURVEY CONTINUED ON A4
