114TH CONGRESS | OATHS OF OFFICE

Local reps optimistic for session Both see manufacturing as key issues for the Sauk Valley, districts

‘‘

Everyone says they want to see Republicans and Democrats work together. The omnibus is them working together ... it’s not pretty, but it’s compromise.

Tuesday was a busy day in the nation’s capital as members of the 114th Congress took their oaths of office. November’s election saw Republicans maintain control of the House and win a majority in the Senate. Third-term Rep. Adam Kinzinger,

R-Channahon, said control will allow a return to regular order and common ground. “It’s going to messy,” he said. “But I think it’ll be more successful than the last 4 years.” Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, started her second term representing the 17th District.

It will take effort on the part of Republicans and Democrats to make sure that we don’t lose sight of what we’re here for ... to move the country forward ...

Crippling temps headed our way

SNOWMAN

High not expected to break 0 today in Sauk Valley BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521

STERLING – In case you haven’t had enough winter, Sauk Valley, buckle up, because record-low temperatures and windchills of minus 34 are headed our way. The only silver lining: The snow seems to be stopping for a little bit. Monday night and Tuesday morning brought snow totals of 3 to 5 inches throughout the Sauk Valley, according to the National Weather Service. The Sterling/Rock Falls area saw about 4 inches; Morrison had it a little worse with 5 inches; and Dixon had it “easy” with a measly 3 inches of snow. CRIPPLING CONTINUED ON A3

hen Jacob Gale looked on Facebook on Monday night and saw people charging $15 and $20 to shovel a driveway, all he could do was shake his head. “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why would you charge someone to do that?’” said Gale, who lives in Sterling and works odd jobs with his parents. “These are our neighbors, and we see them every day.”

So the 22-year-old spent all day Tuesday shoveling driveways in the Sterling and Rock Falls area – free of charge. He shoveled his first driveway at 4 a.m. By 4 p.m., Gale had cleared 26 driveways. “I saw people on Facebook say I’ll do this and that for money, and I was always brought up to help neighbors and help people,” Gale said. “In my opinion, helping people is worth more than making money.”

Gale, a 2011 graduate of Polo High School, said his mother, Angela Hecathorn, taught him at an early age about the benefits of helping people. “She always taught us that helping people went a mile, while money only went a minute,” Gale said. “My mom pushed that, and she always taught me to help my friends and family when they are in need.” SNOWMAN CONTINUED ON A2
