HEROIN IN THE SAUK VALLEY | OPIOID OVERDOSES

Antidote costs keep climbing Princeton Police Chief: Version styled like Epi-Pen is best, but ‘impossible to get’ BY ANGEL SIERRA asierra@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5695 @_angelsierra

A life-saving medicine used to reverse heroin and opioid overdoses already is difficult to get locally, and now its availability could be put

further out of reach by its skyrocketing cost. A new state law now requires police, emergency workers and hospitals to carry naloxone, which is available in three forms: nasal spray, vial and syringe, and an auto-inject pen. “The list price of [Kaleo Phar-

– soared from $575 to $3,750 per two-dose package in just 2 years,” according to a May 16 article by Politico, a Virginiabased political newspaper, citing data by Truven Health Analytics. In addition, the cost for a two-syringe kit by Amphastar

Pharmaceuticals Inc. nearly doubled to $66 from 2013 to 2014, and the generic twovial Hospira product surged 17-fold from $1.84 in 2005 to $31.66 in 2014, the newspaper reported. COSTS continued on A54

MORRISON – A Rock Falls man accused in January of stabbing a woman 30 times with a pair of scissors, causing life-threatening injuries, is unfit to stand trial in his criminal case, a judge ruled Friday. Christian L. Bowman, 30, had been charged with aggravated battery, punishable by 2 to 5 years in prison, and one count of misdemeanor battery. Judge Stanley B. Steines ruled Friday in Whiteside County Court that Bowman, who in court testimony was revealed to have an intellectual developmental disability, will be committed to therapy provided by the Illinois Department of Human Services. STERLING – Anita Elgin was dying of breast cancer. Yet when she awoke in the hospital a few weeks before she lost her battle, she turned to her friend, Karen Payan, and asked how her grandson, Colton Egan, was doing. Shortly after seemingly having overcome E. coli, the 5-year-old’s kidneys failed and he needed a transplant, and that’s the first thing that crossed Elgin’s mind when she saw Payan. Mostly sunny

“Selfless,” Payan said. “That’s how Anita was – totally selfless. She was not feeling good and suffering, but she was thinking of me and my grandson.” Welcome to Miss Anita’s world. Another prime example of selfless-

ness was the day the children’s librarian looked out the window of the Sterling Public Library and saw a family of ducks crossing the road. She dashed out, stopped traffic and helped them cross.
