Who says men don’t belong in the kitchen? One of Osceola’s most anticipated spring flings, the Scouts’ Fellers’ Cake Bake, takes place 6:30 p.m. Monday,
March 20, in the Clarke Elementary cafeteria. Viewing begins at 6:15 p.m. The cake auction pairs Cub Scout and Boy Scout participants with a father, brother or older male figure. The ultimate goal is creating delectible desserts
— and raising money for scout activities. “Osceola is one of the few groups that really tries to pay for our kids to do things. Kids who can’t participate in other things can still take part,” said Cubmaster Callie Shields.
Money from the cake auction goes toward camp fees, camping supplies and activities held throughout the year. How much do the cakes go for? “Anywhere from $30 up,” says 2017 Cake Bake
Co-chairperson Rose Grief. “The sky is the limit.” In the past, businesses have spent hundreds of dollars on the most outstanding entries. According to Grief, it’s an investment in the community, and gives the boys a reward for the effort
they’re making toward becoming good citizens. Those who would like to contribute without participating in the auction may contact Sara Whirrett at 641-414-3486 or Rose Grief at 641-414-2989 or mail a donation to 2178 290th Ave.

came too late for Murray to amend their budget to reflect the loss. The council’s earlier decision had its share of supporters. Twenty years later, there are people in all three Kedley t o w n s questioning why the contributions come from Osceola instead of Clarke County. The manner and the timing of the vote left the towns’ and county’s hands tied. “We’ve already done our budget,” said Clarke County Supervisor Bill Black. “There’s no money for Murray or Woodburn. It wasn’t a consideration. We didn’t know about it.”

WHO-TV Channel 13 News crew. While addressing the council, Fotiadis referenced a letter received from Murray City Administrator Denise Simmons. “In the heat of the letter, there were things said, like ‘unethical’ and ‘immoral’,” he said. In the letter, Simmons took issue with the manner in which the decision on the casino contributions was made. Murray officials were not notified before the issue came up for vote or before Murray created its budget for the year. The town receives roughly $30,000 a year through the agreement. Those funds were incorporated into the city’s budget and earmarked for road construction. “It would have been different if they’d talked to us in January,” said Simmons, noting the decision
