Perfect presents Clarke County’s Toys for Christmas helps community during this year’s holiday season By AMY HANSEN

To give is to receive. That’s an important message from Clarke County’s Toys for Christmas program — the greatest gift is to give to those in need. “We’re very, very fortunate to live in this county. I always say that,” said Dianne Riley with Toys for Christmas. Toys for Christmas first began in 1969 by Larry Van Werden, a local attorney who realized there were children who would not be having any Christmas presents. Since then, volunteers have organized and made the program an annual activity. Families who might need help with Christmas are identified by local organizations working together to have one program countywide. The program has no administrative costs. Giving back Riley said letters with applications were sent out to families that might be in need this holiday season. Families may decide if they wish to participate. Children in the family need to be less than 16 years old. Each child will receive two items of clothing and two toys. Each family will receive a ham from Osceola Foods. There will also be food vouchers for families. So far, there have been 100 applicants, but that number could rise to 150.

Churches, organizations and individuals donate cash or new toys and clothes for the program. They also adopt families and purchase the gifts for the children. “More folks have asked to adopt families this year, which is good,” Riley said. How to help If people want to donate to Toys for Christmas, they may donate cash, new toys and new items of clothing. Donations may be brought to the community center, which is located in Osceola Senior Center on the north side of the building. The donation period goes throughout December. The program encourages volunteers to help wrap gifts, and wrapping started this week. If people are wanting to volunteer, they should call the community center or Riley at 641-342-4681. This is to make sure wrapping is scheduled at a certain time. The distribution dates for the gifts are Dec. 17 and 18. “We’re just so lucky to have so many people who are generous,” Riley said.

True act of kindness Jovee Blakely, 4, makes special donation to Clarke County Animal Shelter By AMY HANSEN

Hibernating — that’s what the animals at Clarke County Animal Shelter will be doing this winter, at least according to Jovee Blakely, 4, of Osceola. Therefore, the cats and dogs will need a lot of food in the coming months to keep themselves well fed. That’s why Jovee decided to put others in need before herself. “She said, ‘I have enough toys already, I want the kitties and puppies to have nice, warm full bellies this winter,’” said Jovee’s mother Erin. “Because the cats and dogs didn’t have enough food,” Jovee added.

Giving back On Thursday, Nov. 20, Jovee made a special donation of pet food and supplies to Clarke County Animal Shelter. However, it’s the reasoning behind this donation that makes it extra special. On Jovee’s recent birthday invitations for her party, it was written that, instead of gifts, she would prefer to have pet food and supplies that could be donated to the animal shelter. “It means we’re going to have a lot of food throughout the winter that we normally wouldn’t have, and it means we’re going to have a lot more litter, which we go through quite a bit,” said Joy Durham, manager of Clarke County Animal Shelter. “The fact that

Jovee takes out of her heart to give us, instead of having it go to her.” Jovee is the daughter of Erin and Shane Blakely and sibling of Journee, 1. The Blakely family has many pets of their own at home, and they have even adopted cats from the animal shelter. “She is an animal lover. This is the second year in a row she’s done this,” Erin said. What she brought Jovee was able to donate 400 pounds of pet food and 100 pounds of litter, plus a lot of toys and cleaners. If people are inspired by Jovee’s act of kindness, the items in need are kitten food, cat litter and puppy food. Cash was also donated to Jovee, and this meant she was able to buy extra cat toys and bleach that were needed. “Even when we went shopping, I told her, here’s the money you have, and she held on to the card. She didn’t ask for anything for herself. I was really impressed,” Erin said.

Clarke County Animal Shelter’s hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The shelter is always available by appointment, and people can call the shelter and leave a message.
