If you want something badly enough, you can make it happen. It was one year ago during a welcome home reception for the Clarke’s runner-up state softball team that Coach Lindsay Diehl said, “We’re going to go back next year and we’re going to win the whole thing.” She was right. The 3A softball title game was a championship rematch between Clarke and Bondurant-Farrar. Unlike last year, the odds turned in Clarke’s favor with the Lady Indians winning 7-6 after a walkoff home run by senior Carley Robins. Back in town After winning the title game Friday afternoon, the softball team was escorted into Osceola by a fleet of law enforcement vehicles. The last time Clarke won a softball championship title was in 1995. A homecoming reception pep rally was held Friday evening as dusk began to fall and the lights were turned on around the courthouse square. As the vehicles pulled in, “We Are The Champions,” by Queen was blared over the sound speakers that were set up. Once the team and coaches made their way to the bandstand, the crowd erupted with cheers of “Coach, coach, coach, coach!”

As Diehl made her way to the center of the stage, someone shouted to her, “Don’t cry!” FORT DODGE — When “Yeah, I’ve cried enough,” Diehl said. “I don’t know if I Carley Robins stepped to have any more tears left, but, I was there in 1995 when they the plate here Friday afwon the state championship as a seventh grader. Senior first baseman Devon Carson called the home run from the dugout. Carson’s prophetic words had right fielder McKenzi Otto convinced. “When Carley got up to bat, I just knew it in my stomach,” Otto said. “Even Devon Carson, she was standing next to me, she was like, ‘It’s time for one of Carley Robins’ home runs.’ I knew we were going to score in that inning. bat, I was like, “I feel Carley is going to hit one right now for us,’” Carson said. “And she did. I just started crying. There were no words. I just started crying.” For seniors Libby Bemis, Kennedy Crees and Brenna Paul, there was no doubt about where the ball would land after it left Robins’ bat. “I knew it was gone right when she hit it,” Crees said. “I ran out of the dugout. I was just screaming. I think I was in shock a little bit. I’m happy for her.” “I knew it was gone,” Paul said. “It was gone! I was excited.” Pitchers don’t typically like to see the ball leave the diamond in a hurry like the Robins home run did, but Bemis enjoyed this home run, which assistant coach Staci Ritchey estimated at 230 feet. “As soon as she made contact, you knew it was gone,” Bemis said. “She just crushed that ball. We went crazy and it was an amazing feeling.”
