Like father, like daughter Miller shares late father’s passion for speedway racing By AMY HANSEN

Right before Keni Miller, 13, of Pleasant Hill gets into her racecar, she has a lot excitement, as well as nerves. That’s to be expected before any competition. However, she knows one of her biggest fans is, somewhere, rooting and cheering her on. That fan would be her father, Kenny Miller, who died from cancer in 2009. “I kind of know that he’s watching over me,” Miller said. Recently, Miller won her junior front-wheel drive race at Clarke County Speedway. She was against six other cars. “It was my third race, so I was pretty proud of myself,” Miller said. All in the family Racing is a tradition in the Miller family. It’s something that gets passed down a generation. Miller’s two older brothers also race. Charlie Mundy, the carpentry and building trades instructor for Southwestern Community College, is Miller’s uncle. She said Mundy’s son does truck races at Clarke County Speedway. There was another special person in Miller’s life who used to race — her father Kenny. His vehicle number was 1K. Now, that number 1K is being used by Miller. When Miller’s racing career began, she said she knew she wanted that number. “It’s taking after him,” Miller said. Her father, whom Miller was named after, used to race a hobby stock vehicle. “As far as I remember, he raced anywhere there was a race — state fairgrounds, Webster City, Boone, Stuart,” Miller said. Busy Saturdays Just about every other Saturday, Miller can be found racing at Clarke County Speedway. She does heat and feature races. Miller’s car is stored at her brother’s house, and on race days, her routine includes going over there and getting stuff ready for the competition. In the Miller family, racing is a family affair. For now, Miller only races at Clarke County Speedway, since she said a lot of raceways have an age limit of needing to be 14 to drive. There are other girls out there the same age as Miller who

Clarke Community School Board approved the resignation of Tom Roff, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, during a school board meeting Monday, June 23. Roff had only been in the school district for one year. Letter This is a section of Roff’s resignation letter: “I am submitting this as my official resignation as curriculum director for Clarke Community Schools. It has been an honor to work with such an amazing group of people, students and community members. This was not an easy decision to make as I have grown very fond of the people I work with on a day to day basis, but I Roff have decided to return to my hometown of Pleasantville to be their elementary principal and work with many longtime friends. While my time here was extremely enjoyable, I missed working with kids tremendously. I hope you will all understand my reasons - the pull of getting back to being with kids and returning to my hometown was just strong enough to lure me away from this great school.”

“I still think we need to look at those and be careful with our extensions ... because that puts us in a bind for replacement.” — Steve O’Tool

Clarke school board member

Extension problems Board member Steve O’Tool said he wanted to publicly comment on the situation. “We didn’t receive this until June 23. Contracts are up June 30, and I hear he had two extensions for not signing his contract, but what I’m thinking is why so late? You know, that doesn’t give us much time to replace him,” O’Tool said. “I’m wondering whether this extension thing should be revisited at some point. Why would you need an extension? If you’re looking for a job, quit the one you have and go find one.” Gerard Linskens, school board president, said he agreed with the situation. “It’s a very late notice, unfortunately. Very late,” Linskens said. A comment was made most school districts allow one extension (two weeks), but some districts don’t allow extensions at all. Please see ROFF, Page 4
