Bottle Bill: What you should know By AMY HANSEN

Since the South Central Iowa Recycling Center, the Osceola can and bottle redemption center, closed May 10, this would be an opportune time to remind the public about some important facets of Iowa’s Beverage Containers Control Law, also known as the “Bottle Bill.” The “Bottle Bill” helps reduce and clean up litter by recovering beverage containers for recycling. Iowa’s “Bottle Bill” deposit law covers all carbonated and alcoholic beverages. Consumers pay a five-cent deposit when purchasing a beverage container and receive a five-cent refund when returning the container to a store or redemption center. This is an important reminder: Anywhere that sells beverages with a deposit is supposed to take them back. A dealer may not refuse to give the consumer back the deposit if the dealer sells that product. However, if a customer were to bring back Fareway, Hiland, or Walmart Supercenter cans to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee would not have to accept them because the customer didn’t purchase them from there. The bill states, “A dealer shall not refuse to accept from a consumer any empty beverage container of the kind, size and brand sold by the dealer, or refuse to pay the consumer the refund val-

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, is famous for his “99-county tour” throughout the state of Iowa, and most of the time, he schedules his visits by hosting open town hall meetings. In Osceola, Grassley went a step above a town hall meeting. He scheduled a tour and visit with the officials and employees of Miller Products Thursday, May 29. Grassley said he usually goes to courthouses for meetings, and typically, it’s the same people he sees every time. By visiting Miller Products, he said he wanted to tap into another group of people who might not have the opportunity to attend his town meetings.
“It gives me an opportunity to do two things — learn about businesses of Iowa, and then I have a ‘Q and A’ with the workers,” Grassley said. “So, I get opinions from people or questions from people that can’t come to my town meetings because they can’t afford to take off work or they can’t get off work.” Overall goal After his visit to Miller Products, Grassley was scheduled to talk at the high school in Leon to answer questions from teenagers. Later in the evening, he was scheduled to speak at a Lions Club meeting in Warren County. Grassley said he was aiming to talk to a cross section of constituents — young people, industry professionals and business and production workers.
“I try to fill in a vacuum that I would have with those type of people,” he said. Once Grassley arrived at Miller Products, he sat down for an interview with the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune. Then, he took a tour of the business. Miller Products Miller Products was founded in 1936 as a bicycle dealer and kickstand manufacturer. The business has evolved into a supplier of screw-machine products. Miller Products manufactures a line of stock nonthreaded pins. This line includes a wide range of lock, hitch, bent and tension-lock-hitch pins. In addition to its stock line, they Please see MILLER PRODUCTS, Page 4

What does Sen. Chuck Grassley, RIowa, think about some of the major state and nationwide events that are currently happening? The Osceola Sentinel-Tribune had an opportunity to have a one-on-one interview with Grassley before he toured Miller Products in Osceola Thursday, May 29. Cannabis oil When it comes to Gov. ley said the governor had to make his own personal decision about signing the bill. “For me, medicinal marijuana would be a situation I would turn over to the Food and Drug Administration, and have them make a decision based upon that medicine the same as they do all medicine from two standpoints — is it effective and is it safe? And, I would want to have the FDA approval of that,” Grassley said. The Medical Cannabidiol Act allows neurologists from Iowa to prescribe up to 32 ounces of the oil to help patients who have epilepsy. It is commonly thought the drug can help people who
