drowned earlier this month in Lake County. Alyce Grundei, 81, was grazed in her head by a bullet and is at the hospital in good condition, Klunk said. She called for help about 5:10 p.m. and said there were gunshot victims, and shots still were being fired, said Police Chief John Perkins. Officers had to enter the house with their weapons drawn, Perkins said. Officers performed CPR on Robert Grundei when they arrived at the scene. Firefighters from the Huntley Fire Protection District also came to the scene to treat all three people.
CRYSTAL LAKE – As veterans groups arrived at Union Cemetery on Monday, the waiting crowd – some of whom waved American flags and dressed in red, white and blue – gave those who served in the military applause to thank them for their service. The parade to the cemetery, the entrance of which was lined with American flags, was part of the Memorial Day festivities that took place in town and around the county to honor those who have died in military service. There also were Memorial Day festivities in Fox River Grove, McHenry, Woodstock, Harvard, Hebron, Richmond, Spring Grove, Johnsburg, Huntley, Algonquin and Cary. The Crystal Lake parade included members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 12014, American Legion Post 171, the Lions Club, Warriors Watch, local Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and marching bands from Crystal Lake Central High School, Crystal Lake South High School and Prairie Ridge High School. After the parade, the crowd gathered for a ceremony that included the playing of Taps, preceded by a rifle salute, and performances by the singing group Voices in Harmony

County Board votes to increase speed limit to 50 on Rakow Road By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Drivers will be able to legally drive a touch bit faster on the newly widened Rakow Road. The County Board voted last week, 23-0, to increase the speed limit from 45 to 50 mph. The change took effect upon the posting of the revised signs on the heavily traveled road that connects
the north-south corridors of Route 31 and Randall Road. The 45 mph speed limit on the 3-mile stretch of road is almost universally ignored. Rakow Road for years was mired in stop-and-go rush hour traffic. Tuesday’s vote defied an earlier recommendation from the McHenry County Division of Transportation that the speed limit remain the same. A study undertaken by the DOT

pegged the average speed of motorists at 52 mph. But the board’s Transportation Committee last month rejected the recommendation and later recommended, 7-0, a 5-mph increase. A long anticipated two-year, $37 million project finished in 2012 widened Rakow Road to four lanes from Route 31 to Pyott Road, and to six lanes between Pyott and Ackman roads. The original two-lane configura-
tion was a nightmare for its 40,000 daily commuters, who during peak travel hours were stuck in bumperto-bumper traffic. The redesign of Rakow Road in recent months has received awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies and the American Public Works Association. Tuesday’s vote was part of the consent agenda and was approved without discussion.
