Lakewood leader warns of effects of proposed cuts By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com

LAKEWOOD – The cuts proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner to the state’s villages and cities wouldn’t hit the village of Lakewood as hard as it may hit others, the village president said. But Village President Erin Smith warned that the laying off of police officers and other cuts to public safety – which some elected officials said would have to follow Rauner’s proposed cuts – wouldn’t leave its effects at the town boundaries. The village of Lakewood followed other McHenry County communities, including Algonquin and Woodstock, in passing a resolution asking the governor and the Illinois General Assembly to reconsider a pro-

posed 50 percent cut to municipalities’ share of state income tax revenue. “We’re just trying to make sure it’s a balanced discussion,” Smith said. The cut would amount to about $190,000 for the village of Lakewood and would likely mean street improvements and repairs wouldn’t occur on the regular Erin Smith schedule the village has maintained, Smith said. “The village of Lakewood is strong and healthy and able to weather that better than most, but as I talk to other mayors and village

Jessica Rogers of McHenry rubs her fingers over her newly shaved head Thursday after participating in the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation community shave sponsored by McHenry High School in McHenry. Rogers raised $1,265 for childhood cancer research.

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com McHENRY – Riverwood Elementary School third-grader Emily Mack wasn’t nervous at all about cutting off her thick ponytail and then shaving her head. She’d been pushing her parents to let her participate in the annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation community shave in McHenry for more than a year, something she wanted to do in honor of her aunt, Linda Lonigro of Crystal Lake, who died this past August after fighting breast cancer for seven years. Emily finally got them to say yes just days before the shave. “She was very adamant that she wanted to do it,” said her mother, Michele Mack. “She didn’t care how much money she raised. She didn’t care if she raised any. She just wanted to be a part of it.” And standing in the milling crowds that filled the gym at McHenry West High School, Emily still was adamant that it was worth it. Hundreds of people across McHenry County have shaved – or are set

Fake IRS agents target more than 366K in tax scam WASHINGTON – Fake IRS agents have targeted more than 366,000 people with harassing phone calls demanding payments and threatening jail in the largest scam of its kind in the history of the agency, a federal investigator said Thursday. More than 3,000 people have fallen for the ruse since 2013, said Timothy Camus, a Treasury deputy inspector general for tax administration. They were conned out of a total of $15.5 million. The scam has claimed victims in almost every state, Camus said. One unidentified victim lost more than $500,000. “The criminals do not discriminate. They are calling people everywhere, of all income levels and backgrounds,” Camus told the Senate Finance Committee at a hearing. “The callers often warned the victims that if they hung up, local police would come to their homes

“These criminal acts are perpetrated by thieves ... preying on honest taxpayers and robbing the Treasury of tens of billions of dollars every year.” Sen. Orrin Hatch R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee to arrest them.” The scam is so widespread that investigators believe there is more than one group of perpetrators, including some overseas. Camus said even he received a call from one of the scammers at his home on a Saturday. He said he had a stern message for the caller: “Your day will come.”
