Shoppers out looking for deals Local shops gear up for Saturday By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com

Early morning Black Friday Target shoppers (from left) Allie Worley, mom Deb Worley and Kelly Ladd, all of Crystal Lake, look for bargains shortly after 6 a.m. Friday in Crystal Lake. While there were crowds at stores Friday morning, some of the holiday shopping bustle has shifted to Thursday night – figures from the National Retail Federation show the number of Thursday shoppers jumped 27 percent from 2012 to 2013.

Stores see smaller Friday crowds after Thanksgiving rush By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Neatly written on a loose-leaf sheet of paper were names, items to buy, prices, plus a budget for each of the 15 people Stephanie Vich of Marengo was shopping for on Black Friday. She clutched her organized plan of attack in the Crystal Lake Target while explaining it was her first

time venturing out for Black Friday in a few years. Although it was destined to be a highly productive day, Vich said the experience wasn’t exactly how she remembered it. What was once an early-morning flood of shoppers was this year more like a trickle at stores such as Target and Kohl’s in Crystal Lake. “Even just a few years ago, things used to be out of control today,” Vich said in the middle of the

baby clothes aisle. “It’s gotten drastically less crowded on Black Friday since the last time I came out.” The manager of logistics at Target, Josh Eich, seemed unfazed by the underwhelming Friday morning crowd, saying the big shopping rush took place the night before. “Thursday night is the new Black Friday, for sure,” Eich said,

For local business owner Carol Chrisman, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is her time to thrive. “It’s like my Black Friday,” said Chrisman, who owns Black Orchid Boutique, 1226 N. Green St., McHenry. “Small Business Saturday is something that helps every small business owner and the community by helping the local businesses keep their doors open.” Small Business Saturday is a 5-year-old movement meant to underscore the importance of localization during the busy holiday shopping season. Started in 2010 by American Express, it has become a chance for mom-and-pop shops of every community to stay competitive amid doorbuster deals of big box retailers. Many local storefronts will be promoting one-day only deals and promotions. Sue Nelson of Nelson’s Jewelry, 1 Crystal Lake Plaza, Crystal Lake, said it’s nice to get a spotlight every year and explained her plans to attract customers on Saturday. “We’re going to be giving away a free strand of freshwater pearls, a $50 value, for tomorrow only to customers who spend $100 or more,” Nelson said. Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce President Mary Margaret Maule said being locally aware is crucial in order to keep a community going.
