An
in-depth look at the commercial side of our growing community!

SGKR Law: Advocates for Victims Since 1977
Schweickert, Ganassin, Krzak and Rundio, LLP (SGKR) has established itself as a premier personal injury and worker’s compensation law firm serving the Illinois Valley and greater community. With offices strategically located in Peru, Ottawa, Morris, and Chicago, the firm has been a stalwart defender of injury victims’ rights for over four decades.
A LEGACY OF COMPASSIONATE ADVOCACY
Since its founding in 1977, SGKR has built a reputation for combining experienced legal representation with compassionate client care. The firm’s attorneys recognize that navigating the legal system can be overwhelming for clients already dealing with injuries or loss. That’s why SGKR places special emphasis on guiding clients through the litigation process, ensuring they understand their rights and the legal pathways avail-
able to them.
With more than 70 years of combined experience, SGKR’s injury and workers’ compensation lawyers have developed the expertise needed to secure just compensation for their clients. Their proven track record speaks to their commitment to fighting for the justice their clients deserve.
COMPREHENSIVE INJURY REPRESENTATION
SGKR specializes in personal injury cases, including:
• Workers’ compensation claims
• Car and truck accidents
• Slip/trip and fall incidents
• Medical malpractice
• Nursing home abuse
• Wrongful death lawsuits
The firm’s approach combines aggressive legal advocacy with personal attention to each client’s specific situation, ensuring that injury victims receive tailored representation that addresses their
unique needs and concerns.
MESOTHELIOMA ADVOCACY: FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE
In addition to their general personal injury practice, SGKR has developed specialized expertise in representing mesothelioma victims. The firm prides itself on helping mesothelioma patients and their families secure justice and financial security during incredibly challenging times.
Mesothelioma cases require legal knowledge and sensitivity. SGKR’s experience in this area allows it to provide the specialized advocacy these complex cases demand, helping victims and their families navigate the difficult terrain of asbestos-related illness litigation.
COMMUNITY-FOCUSED LEGAL SERVICES
What sets SGKR apart is their deep connection to the communities they serve. For over 45 years, they have ad-
vocated for Illinois Valley residents, recovering significant compensation for injury victims throughout the region.
The firm’s commitment to the local community is evident in their accessible approach to legal services. SGKR offers free case evaluations, making quality legal representation available to those who need it most, regardless of financial situation.
For those dealing with personal injuries, workplace accidents, or mesothelioma, SGKR provides both the legal expertise and compassionate support needed during difficult times. Their dedication to their clients’ wellbeing and rights continues to make them trusted advocates for injury victims throughout Illinois.

IVAC fosters business growth and community development
Over the past 114 years, the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce (IVAC) has worked toward fostering business growth and community development across LaSalle, Bureau, and Putnam counties. By actively listening to member feedback, IVAC has introduced 22 innovative programs, in the last four years, tailored to meet the evolving needs of its diverse membership base.
One standout initiative is the Illinois Valley Community Leadership Academy (IVCLA), designed to cultivate local leadership by connecting participants with current business and community leaders. The academy offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes leadership lessons, networking opportunities, and a capstone project aimed at making a tangible impact on the community. Participants have praised the program for building valuable connections and enhanc-

ing their leadership skills.
Fostering entrepreneurship at all levels, IVAC introduced Lemonade Day—a program that teaches kids business fundamentals by guiding them through the process of launching their own business. This hands-on experience provides valuable lessons in financial literacy and customer service, helping to build the next generation of business leaders.
IVAC also recognizes and celebrates success in our region. The 40 Under Forty and Community Cor -
nerstone Awards highlight outstanding individuals and organizations making a difference in our communities. These programs shine a light on the talent, innovation, and dedication that make the Illinois Valley strong.
A focus on personal and professional development has led IVAC to provide access to a DiSC-certified consultant, Executive Director Bill Zens. The goal of DiSC is to aid members in enhancing workplace communication, teamwork, and overall organizational
health by offering insights into behavioral styles and interpersonal dynamics.
The Chamber is always looking for ways to provide direct support to its members. IVAC now offers a member-specific health insurance option, giving businesses access to affordable coverage for their teams.
IVAC is always evolving to meet the needs of its members and the community. Chamber Executive Director Bill Zens says, “The work that we do and the programming we create is a direct reflection of the feedback our partners provide.” IVAC’s goal is simple: to help businesses thrive and strengthen the Illinois Valley. This member-centric approach has solidified IVAC’s role as a pivotal force in driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life in the Illinois Valley. City of Mendota
Exciting things are happening in Mendota! From new recreational spaces to expanded support for youth and businesses, there’s a lot to look forward to. Additionally, a new video series, “Why I Love Mendota,” has been launched to showcase the city’s positive aspects.
Opening this June is a new 18-hole disc golf course at Lake Kakusha Park. It was designed by professional disc golfer Dana Vicich, who has family ties to Mendota, as well as Illinois Valley residents and avid disc golfers Dan Nagle and Wes Black. Mendota City Parks staff were instrumental in bringing it to life.
Walkability improvements begin this spring. New sidewalks will be placed around Lincoln School through a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) infrastructure grant, making it safer for students to walk or bike. The SRTS Non-Infra-

structure Grant will support walking audits to develop a comprehensive safe walkability plan for all schools in

Mendota.
Youth programming continues to grow through the Partnership for Success Grant.
The Live Well Mendota group hosts early-release day activities, including bowling, cooking classes, and dodgeball. A recently developed Youth Leadership Group will help plan additional activities for their peers.
The city recently launched the Work Well Initiative, funded by a Farm Bureau Grant. This program provides business support services for businesses that are developing, new or established. Services include assistance with business start-up, business plans and marketing. Scholarships for online courses and Google Certificates are also available.
To celebrate the great things in Mendota, watch “Why I Love Mendota” (https://rebrand.ly/lovemendota). This is the first video in a series launched by the city, featuring residents sharing what makes the community so special.

Details, passion drive staff at Carpet Weavers
Details matter to Annette and Kevin Fischer, owners of Carpet Weavers Flooring & Furniture Gallery location in Peru. With 43 years of experience in flooring installation, he’s known for his detailed work.
“He’s very good at custom fitting and adding those details that make the flooring look amazing,” said Annette Fischer.
When Carpet Weaver founder Mark Weaver approached his top-rated installer with the business opportunity to open a store location in the Peru-LaSalle area it seemed a bit daunting at first, Annette Fischer recalled. She was from the tiny town of Roanoke, IL and was offering interior design

help while raising the couple’s six children.
With her eye for design and his top-notch installation skills, the pair took a leap of faith and opened the store

10 years ago. It wasn’t easy, competing with other longtime businesses and big box stores, but the couple maintained the Carpet Weaver promise, providing custom-
ers with a large selection and standing behind their work to keep customers.
“Flooring is a big ticket purchase and we want to help our customers make the most of their dollars and find the right look, product and fit for their home and lifestyle,” Annette Fischer said.

The business started in 1996 and with each passing year the business and customer base grew.
With the passing of her first husband, Tami made the decision to keep the family business going. Being blessed to find love once again, Tami met and mar -

ried her second husband, Greg, who quickly became an integral part of the growing family business.
They formed the family business GTL Enterprise LLC, which encompasses the family businesses that include T & L Janitorial Supply LLC, Secure Key Solutions LLC and Illinois Valley Radon
Mitigation LLC.

Secure Key Solutions LLC will take care of residential and commercial locksmith needs and more. Ag programs return to LaSalle-Peru High School
Growing interest from students has been the driving force to restart the LaSalle-Peru High School’s Agricultural Studies program.
“This is of the most authentic student lead initiatives,” Superintendent Dr. Steve Wrobleski said, adding “We are replanting L-P Ag.”
This current school year the L-P is offering an Ag class with dual credit at Illinois Valley Community College, using an instructor from the college. For the 2025-26 school year the school has hired a new full-time instructor, Riley Hintzsche.
Wrobleski said the new instructor already has his first assignment, to help build a nationally recognized high school Ag program.
The school’s last Ag program closed about 15 years ago, Wrobleski said. The renewed interest in the

Agriculture Studies are returning to LaSalle-Peru Township High School. As the Ag program begins to take shape, L-P has targeted the southeast corner of Creve Coeur and Sixth streets as the future home of an all-new ag building on campus. Superintendent Dr. Steven Wrobleski said the target is to have the building open by spring 2026 with the first full semester of courses in it by fall 2026.
program has come largely from the students, including those active in 4-H. The
new instructor will lead course studies in animal care and veterinary studies
and the courses will have dual credit with IVCC.
L-P is investing in more than faculty for the return of its Ag program, with a commitment to build a new free standing Ag building on the school campus. This new building will include traditional classrooms, science labs, space for demonstrations, a green house and open areas that could accommodate future studies such as small engines.
“We want to ensure the building will meet students’ needs now and in the future,” Wrobleski said.
The school has a $5 million budget for the new building. Wrobleski said a generous donor has already committed $2.5 million toward the project, which is in the design phase, with input from students, staff and the community.
Wrobleski said the target is to have the building open by spring.

Cantlin Law Firm Family Members Make It Personal
The Cantlin Law Firm is not your typical law firm. It is not every day that the attorneys are family members making their small business law firm a personal one for their community. Being a family and knowing family values is what makes The Cantlin Law Firm unique and relationships with clients unwavering.
The venerable Ottawa law firm was established by John (Jack) L. Cantlin in 1977. Jack works alongside four of his five children. Christina, who has returned after finishing an appointment as a Circuit Judge, and Timothy, Joseph, and Megan. Jack’s oldest son, Ryan, is also an attorney who works at the LaSalle County State’s Attorney’s office.
Each attorney at The Cantlin Law Firm focuses their expertise on different areas of law. Jack concentrates on personal injury, wrongful death litigation, estate administration, and estate planning. Christina spends her days centering around municipal law as corporation counsel for the City of Ottawa and the City of Marseilles. She also handles Managing Partner Duties. Timothy’s focal point is on personal injury, wrongful death, and litigation. Joseph’s emphasis is on farm, commercial and residential real estate transactions, estate planning, and estate administration. Megan applies her skill on municipal law by assisting with the City of Ottawa and the City of Marseilles and she handles civil litigation, traffic/DUIs, and business entities.

With each attorney bringing their knowledge and strengths in each diverse areas of the law, clients can build and maintain a relationship with the firm and still receive experienced legal advice. For example, while the initial client contact with the firm might be for a personal injury case, the client can get the same qualified legal advice when they are ready to sell or buy a new home or need assistance when a loved one passes.
Not only is The Cantlin Law Firm unique by being family members, it is not every day you hear the lawyers also continue to operate a family grain farm. By growing up on a farm, Jack and his children learned at a young age that hard work and dedication is necessary to be successful. This
hard work and dedication reflect in their law practice to ensure they provide their clients with the best possible representation. With the family’s agricultural background, the firm is uniquely positioned to have the ability and understanding to confidently represent a variety of farmer-clients and their interests.
The Cantlin Law Firm is also a proud supporter of the community to ensure they give back to the community that supports their long-standing legal practice. The Cantlin Law Firm proudly supports youth organizations, such as:
Little League, Illinois Valley Gymnastics Academy, and the Ottawa Soccer Club. The Firm also supports multiple local schools and provides a scholarship at IVCC each year. With the family’s strong agricultural ties, the Firm also supports agricultural programs, such as, 4-H and FFA.
The Cantlin Law Firm is a distinctively positioned law firm that uses teamwork, experience, and dedication to provide clients with the results they deserve. Clients are considered family and that is why at The Cantlin Law Firm, “Personal Injury is Personally Handled”.

Progress and Heritage: The Story of Peru, Illinois
Nestled along the Illinois River, the City of Peru is just three miles west of the strategic intersection of Interstates 39 and 80. As the western terminus of the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal, Peru played a pivotal role in opening inland navigation beyond this point, laying the foundation for the city’s growth. Peru is a city rich in history yet focused on the future. Known for its economic vitality, Peru continues to lead the region in retail sales—generating one out of every three retail tax dollars in LaSalle County. This strong retail presence allows the city to maintain some of the lowest real estate taxes in North Central Illinois.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Peru’s economy continues to evolve with strategic investments in manufacturing, retail, and infrastructure. A major recent success is GAF Manufacturing, which has now been operating for over a year in the city’s newest industrial park, MVP TIF. The company’s state-of-the-art, 500,000-squarefoot facility brought more than 70 high-quality jobs to the community. With continued operations going strong, GAF’s presence is a symbol of the city’s manufacturing resurgence.
The manufacturing district in Peru is thriving, anchored by a diverse group of major employers including James Hardie, Unytite, Canam, Metokote, and Eakas Corporation. Eakas is exploring a tentative expansion, which could result in additional job opportunities and further investment in the community—signaling confidence in Peru’s economic climate and workforce.
Retail also plays a major role in Peru’s economy. The city is home to large national retailers such as Walmart,
Target, Kohl’s, and Hy-Vee, as well as Liberty Village and a wide variety of restaurants and local businesses that serve both residents and visitors. In the past year, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen have opened their doors, adding to the city’s growing list of retail and dining options. Additionally, a Five Below store has recently broken ground, bringing even more momentum to Peru’s vibrant retail landscape.
HEALTHCARE ADVANCEMENTS
Peru has made tremendous progress in healthcare access and quality. OSF HealthCare Saint Elizabeth Medical Center – Peru has now been open for over a year and continues to expand its services to meet the needs of the region. The facility serves as a critical hub for emergency and inpatient care, offering diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, pharmacy, EKG, respiratory care, and more.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Peru’s careful city planning has cultivated attractive, well-connected neighborhoods near schools, parks, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and scenic riverfronts.
The city’s parks and recreational amenities are second to none. Centennial Park features shaded picnic shelters and the iconic Schweickert Band Shell, where summer concerts bring the community together. Baker Lake offers a one-mile paved trail around a peaceful fishing lake—perfect for walkers, runners, and cyclists. Washington Park is a hit with families, featuring a 12,000-square-foot baseball-themed splash pad. For sports lovers, Veterans Park is a standout, with upgraded baseball and softball fields. Schweickert is home to the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp, a collegiate team in the Prospect League. In a
major point of pride for the community, the Pistol Shrimp won the Prospect League Championship and have signed a three-year extension to continue playing at Schweickert Stadium, solidifying Peru as a premier destination for summer baseball and community spirit.
AVIATION AND TRIBUTE
Peru is also proud to be a destination for aviation and warbird enthusiasts. Each year, the city hosts the TBM Avenger Salute to Veterans, a powerful and patriotic event that honors those who have served our country. 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of this beloved gathering, which draws vintage aircraft, military flyovers, and thousands of spectators to the Illinois Valley Regional Airport. The centerpiece of the event is the iconic TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, with TBM T83 proudly based right here in Peru. As one of the few remaining flying Avengers, T83 serves not only as a living piece of history but as a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans. This unique celebration has become a treasured tradition and a point of pride for the entire community.
LOOKING AHEAD
As Peru continues to build on its strong foundation, the city remains committed to thoughtful growth, economic opportunity, and a high quality of life for all residents. With expanding healthcare, thriving industry, championship-level recreation, and a growing retail sector, Peru is not just a city with a rich past—it’s a vibrant, forward-moving community where families, businesses, and visitors can flourish. The future is bright in Peru, and the city welcomes everyone to be part of its next chapter.
