CRYSTAL LAKE – A man was found dead outside a Crystal Lake home that was destroyed by a fire, but it’s unclear whether he died in the blaze or before it. Fire crews were dispatched at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday to the 1100 block of North Shore Drive, where they found an active fire and the man outside with no signs of life, Crystal Lake police said in a news release. The man was believed to be a plumber working inside the home with a torch before the fire. It was unclear how he died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family. The home’s residents were not home at the time. On the scene, Mark Rockwell, a neighbor who lives three doors down, told the Northwest Herald he saw a

man pull another from the home before rescue crews arrived. Authorities confirmed that, but did not release the man’s name. The fire was under control in about 15 minutes. The home, a 1½-story coach house, sustained more than $25,000 in damage and was deemed uninhabitable. No other structures or property was damaged in the fire, and there were no other injuries. Crews from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, McHenry, Huntley, Nunda Township, Cary, East Dundee, Lakewood, Wonder Lake and Fox River Grove assisted with the fire. They were released by 4 p.m. while fire investigators remained on the scene. The incident is under investigation by the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Crystal Lake police, the Illinois Fire Marshal’s Office and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

part of Richard Phannenstill never came back from Vietnam. Phannenstill, a 1964 McHenry High School graduate and Vietnam veteran, lost three of his classmates and another McHenry High School alumnus during the war. For more than 30 years, Phannenstill thought of ways he could properly remember his fallen brothers. On Tuesday, he accomplished that mission. Hundreds gathered at Veterans Memorial Park in McHenry on Tuesday to witness the unveiling of a monument built in honor of four McHenry High School graduates killed in Vietnam. The memorialized included John Granath Jr., killed at 20; Glenn Davis, killed at 22; Carter Freund, killed at 22; and James Ambrose, killed at 23. “It started 14 years ago, so it is a relief it is finally here,” Phannenstill said of the process of building the memorial. “I did not want anyone to forget about them.” Memories of the men were as real as the monument for those in attendance. People shared stories about their high schools days, some recalled playing Little League baseball together and even Mayor Sue Low be-

came “Susie” for the day as she thought back to growing up in that tight-knit community. “I can tell you with 100 percent sincere honesty,” an emotional Low told the crowd, “I think this is the most important thing I’ve ever done in the years I’ve represented you.” Even those who never met the McHenry men who died in Vietnam helped make the monument a reality. The McHenry High School Class of 2014 donated all the proceeds from its class fundraiser to the memorial and the high school choir was on hand Tuesday to perform songs during the ceremony.

Incoming Chicago archbishop urged to address abuse By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press CHICAGO – A prominent lawyer for victims of sexual abuse urged the incoming Roman Catholic archbishop of Chicago to address the festering issue quickly and forthrightly, including by requiring priests to sign statements testifying they never abused a child. of secrecy within the church, Anderson argued. “It’s time for him to jump outside of that box of clerical secrecy,” he said. Anderson also said Cupich should reveal the names of current priests who have faced allegations so those allegations can be vetted by parties with no direct links to the church. Anderson, other plaintiffs’ attorneys and victims’ groups have long accused outgoing Cardinal Francis George of not being transparent enough and of downplaying the severity of sexual abuse by priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Anderson, who has sued archdioceses nationwide, called Tuesday’s news conference to criticize the way the Chicago Archdiocese went about releasing 15,000 internal documents last week on the sexual abuse of children by 36 priests.
