LGive thanks to ‘Neighbors’ Bastianich celebrates American communities

idia Bastianich is a woman of many talents. In addition to a successful 27 years hosting cooking shows on PBS, the Italianborn chef is a real people person. For those who have followed her career over the past three decades, this proclamation of sociality is unlikely to come as a surprise, but for those who have jumped on the Bastianich bandwagon recently — or for those who happily stumbled across one of her specials on a cozy day in front of the television — yes, she really does care as much as it seems.

Since 2011, Bastianich has been showing her appreciation for the country she calls home in a series titled “Lidia Celebrates America” on PBS. Having covered everything from culturally significant holiday traditions and wedding ceremonies to the importance of giving back to first responders and front-line service workers, Bastianich has spent the bulk of her 60s and 70s giving back to the country that welcomed her family with open arms when she was just 11 years old.

The newest installment of “Lidia Celebrates America,” subtitled “A Nation of Neighbors,” premieres Tuesday, Nov. 25, on PBS, and continues Bastianich’s rich tradition of warming hearts from coast to coast.

“It’s the 14th year [of ‘Lidia Celebrates America’], and it’s my way of thanking America,” Bastianich said in an interview with TV Media ahead of the special’s release. “I find that sometimes it [the U.S.] is maligned ... so I said, ‘I’ve got to go out there and really show through food’ — because that’s how I communicate that — ‘that there’s so many good elements and good people and good experiences in America.’”

And Bastianich certainly has a way of bringing out the best in people — often with a few joyful tears along the way — a talent that may harken back to her memories growing up in a small, tight-knit community before her family’s immigration to the United States.

“When I grew up as a kid in a small town in Italy, we knew every house in town, more or less,” recalled Bastianich of her childhood. “If you came home late from school or early from school [and] your mother wasn’t home, you knocked on your neighbor’s door [and] they fed you. ... The adults would get together, they have coffee together, sit under the mulberry tree in the summertime and talk.”

“I think that that gives you a sense of [positivity] and stability, you know, to have these connections,” Bastianich concluded, adding, “and here, maybe it is a little missing.”

This is one of the many reasons Bastianich dedicates so much of her life to traveling the country and bonding with members of the com-

munities she visits. And what better way to do that than with a table full of delicious, soul-nurturing food?

In “A Nation of Neighbors,” Bastianich begins by visiting Altadena, California, a community hit hard by the wildfires that ravaged L.A. earlier this year. There, Firas Ayyad runs No Res Gourmet, a “501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating food insecurity with a holistic approach that blends nutrition, education and immersive experiences” (per No Res Gourmet’s official website). Like many sustainable, community-run organizations across the United States, the team of dedicated staff and volunteers at No Res (short for No Reservations) serve as the backbone of their community, lifting others up when they most need support. Many of these volunteers, like Altadena local Cisco Licona, have also been affected by recent events and use that as their fuel to give back.

“Love is a state of being,” Licona, a No Res volunteer who lost his own Altadena home during the 2025 wildfires, said to Bastianich in the

documentary. “It’s the tether that keeps us all together.”

This tether, as Bastianich illustrates, stretches clean across the country and encapsulates all manner of methods.

In the documentary, viewers can feel the love as the PBS star visits TikTok inspiration Kiki Rough (@kikirough) in Porter County, Indiana, where together they consult wartime and recession-era cookbooks such as “Searchlight” and “The Canned Foods Cookbook” to give struggling families the skills and confidence to make satisfying meals on a budget.

In Denver, meanwhile, Bastianich visits backyard gardener Steph Grogan, who is just one of many in the area who contributes to SAME Cafe in a unique way.

SAME is an acronym that stands for “So All May Eat,” and their model offers all diners a choice: in exchange for your lunch, you may volunteer your time, donate fresh produce (like Grogan) or pay with traditional currency. This way, all may eat, regardless of income, time con-

straints or one’s access to food and other vital resources.

“There’s no reason that anyone should be hungry,” Bastianich said. “That’s what the state is supposed to do, to take care of its inhabitants, in whichever way. If we have a hurricane, take care of that part. If we have an epidemic, they’re supposed to be there. ... You can’t punish people that way for your political gains.”

Join the food security movement and share in Lidia Bastianich’s joy as she travels to these locations and more in “Lidia Celebrates America: A Nation of Neighbors,” premiering Tuesday, Nov. 25, on PBS. And if you are hungry for more, seek out some recipes at PBS.org/lidia.

‘Stranger Things’ ties up loose ends in final episodes

Memories of the 1980s — with its distinctive fashion and hairstyles, music and pop culture — have fueled “Stranger Things” through a decade of its own. The hit science fiction series, which debuted more than nine years before its concluding season premieres, returns with its fifth and final season in three volumes, starting Wednesday, Nov. 26, when Netflix premieres the first set of four new episodes. Three more episodes drop on the streamer on Christmas Day before the two-hour series finale streams on Dec. 31, with limited theatrical screenings in Canada and the U.S. scheduled on the same day.

Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown, “Enola Holmes,” 2020) and the crew of misfit kids are back again to save Hawkins, Indiana, and the world from what’s crossed dimensional lines from the Upside Down. This season, according to Netflix, “with Hawkins under lockdown, El in hiding and danger lurking at every turn, the entire party unites with a single goal: to hunt and kill Vecna.” Everything hidden beneath Hawkins Laboratory has finally been brought to light now that the fourth gate to the Upside Down was opened in last season’s finale. Vecna, the hulking crimson being portrayed by “Camelot” actor Jamie Campbell Bower in full-body, sinewy prosthetics, has been terrorizing the residents of Hawkins in order to get to Eleven and absorb her power. It all began when he captured Will Byers (Noah Schnapp, “Hubie Halloween,” 2020) on his bike ride home from a Dungeons and Dragons hangout with his friends Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard, “When You Finish Saving the World,” 2022), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo, “Honor Society,” 2022) and Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin, “The Book of Clarence,” 2023) on Nov. 6, 1983. Since then, Vecna has fought to open the gates between the real world and the Upside Down, where he turned punishment into an opportunity to rule over a dark world, killing kids in order to break through the dimensions. With the gates now wide open, Vecna plans to mould civilization to his evil whims, and the only ones who can stop him are the kids who’ve survived his torture and those who care for them.

This season, series co-creator Matt Duffer (“Wayward Pines”) told Tudum that the kids are “not experiencing normal life. Nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore.” With the town on military lockdown, literally ripped apart at the gates to the Upside Down, Duffer said about the gang, “their movement is restricted, and there are Big Brother cameras everywhere. So not only are they active — their everyday, normal lives are anything but.”

Screen Scramble

Returning this season are Winona Ryder (“Show Me a Hero”) as Joyce Byers, Will’s mother; David Harbour (“Thunderbolts,” 2025) as Hawkins Police chief Jim Hopper; Sadie Sink (“The Whale,” 2022) as Max Mayfield; Natalia Dyer (“Based on a True Story”) as Nancy Wheeler; Charlie Heaton (“Billy Knight,” 2025) as Jonathan Byers; Joe Keery (“Fargo”) as Steve Harrington; Maya Hawke (“Do Revenge,” 2022) as Robin Buckley; Priah Ferguson (“The Curse of Bridge Hollow,” 2022) as Erica Sinclair; Brett Gelman (“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” 2022) as Murray Bauman; Cara Buono (“Supergirl”) as Karen Wheeler; and Amybeth McNulty (“Anne With an E”) as Vickie.

Joining the cast this season are Nell Fisher (“Bookworm,” 2024) as Holly Wheeler; Alex Breaux (“American Primeval”) as Lt. Akers; Linda Hamilton (“Resident Alien”) as Dr. Kay; and newcomer Jake Connelly as Derek. Though the upcoming season will be Breaux’s first appearance in the series, it will not be his first time stepping into the “Stranger Things” universe. A prequel play, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” which earned Laurence Olivier awards for its West End production and Tony awards for its Broadway run, brought Hawkins and the Upside Down to the stage. Breaux starred as Dr. Brenner in the early days of the experiments at Hawkins Laboratory.

The cultural impact that “Stranger Things” has had since it debuted on the streamer in 2016 cannot be ignored. Be it its role in introducing a generation of music lovers to Kate Bush with the perfect marriage of the 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” with Max’s escape from Vecna or the sheer amount of Eleven costumes you can spot to this day every Halloween, the series has inspired its audience far beyond just contributing to setting Netflix viewership records throughout its run.

Netflix has pulled out all the stops to make the end of one of its tentpole series into an event. From a premiere livestream to worldwide special events and a thorough merchandise market — complete with collectibles, apparel, candles, edible tie-ins, games, books and makeup — there is no chance that any fan of the series will feel abandoned in the Upside Down, unaware of premiere day when it comes.

Is it a cookie jar? A gingerbread man? A nutcracker? No! It’s cake! Return to a world full of hyperrealistic cakes with the Season 2 premiere of “Is It Cake? Holiday,” coming to Netflix Tuesday, Nov. 25.

With “Saturday Night Live” cast member Mikey Day returning as the competition’s steadfast host, this holidaythemed spectacular will see six all-star bakers — three “Is It Cake?” alumni and three newbie challengers — facing off in the creation of festive cakes that are nearly indistinguishable from their real-life counterparts.

According to Netflix, this “truly tinseled-out showdown” follows the show’s usual format, as “bakers will

be creating cakes shaped into realistic replicas of common objects, and celebrity judges will be guessing which of them are fondant-covered fake-outs.” The twist, however, is that each and every cake will be made to emulate items commonly seen around the holidays, including Christmas trees, advent calendars, extravagant meals, Santa-ready chimneys and more. In this second season, the bakers will face an additional challenge, as all cakes presented must be placed on a rotating platter, meaning there’s no room for imperfection — the front, back and sides of every cake must be equally impressive. With a $75,000 prize pool and a spot in the season finale on the line, the stakes are higher than ever before.

This season, cakes will be presented to an impressive

panel of judges, including Kristen Bell (“Frozen,” 2013), Lacey Chabert (“Haul Out the Holly,” 2022), Michael Urie (“Single All the Way,” 2021), Dustin Milligan (“Hot Frosty,” 2024), Kel Mitchell (“Kenan & Kel”), Lamorne Morris (“New Girl”), Wendi McLendon-Covey (“St. Denis Medical”), King Bach (“The Babysitter,” 2017) and Pierson Fode (“The Wrong Paris,” 2025).

“Jingle Bell Heist” (2025)

Love and larceny go hand in hand during a daring Christmas Eve heist. Catch “Jingle Bell Heist” Wednesday, Nov. 26, on Netflix, where at the height of the holiday rush, two desperate Londoners find an unexpected connection while plotting the crime of the season. Sophia Martin (Olivia Holt, “Cruel Summer”), a woman juggling multiple jobs to support her ailing mother, reaches her breaking point when she learns her mother’s surgery won’t be covered by insurance. Desperate for a quick payday, she makes an attempt at robbing her horrible boss, Maxwell Sterling (Peter Serafinowicz, “Spy,” 2015), but instead crosses paths with Nick O’Connor (Connor Swindells, “Barbie,” 2023), a single father and former security consultant barely making ends meet. Rather than turn her in, Nick proposes a partnership — one last, high-stakes job at the city’s most luxurious department store. But as the plan spirals out of control, love turns out to be the most unpredictable twist of their holiday heist. Directed by Michael Fimognari (“The Haunting of Hill House”) and written by Abby McDonald (“Bridgerton”), “Jingle Bell Heist” also stars Lucy Punch (“Into the Woods,” 2014), Poppy Drayton (“The Little Mermaid,” 2018), Michael Salami (“Hollyoaks”) and Mariah Louca (“EastEnders”).

WHAT’S NEW ON PEACOCK

“Bel-Air” - Season 4

Inspired by Morgan Cooper’s (“Bel-Air,” 2019) viral short film that reimagined the beloved ‘90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Bel-Air” returns for its fourth and final season Monday, Nov. 24, on Peacock. This series takes a dramatic, modern approach to Will’s (Jabari Banks, “Bad Genius,” 2024) journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel Air, Calif. In Season 4, Will faces the excitement and pressure of senior year while trying to live up to the expectations that brought him this far. Carlton (Olly Sholotan, “Run Hide Fight,” 2020)

confronts the fallout from life-altering decisions that could jeopardize his future, while Phil (Adrian Holmes, “Are We There Yet?,” 2005) and Geoffrey (Jimmy Akingbola, “Most Dangerous Game”) find their loyalties tested in an unexpected power shift that threaten their brotherhood. Meanwhile, Viv (Cassandra Freeman, “Luke Cage”) reevaluates her identity through motherhood and Ashley (Akira Akbar, “Captain Marvel,” 2019) experiences growing pains in her rebellious freshman year. Hilary (Coco Jones, “Vampires vs. The Bronx,” 2020), on the other hand, embarks on a journey of self-discovery as the Banks family adapts to change. Nick Copus (“Animal Kingdom”) returns to direct, with “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” alum Janet Hubert — who played the original Aunt Viv — joining the cast this season as a wise woman whom Hilary meets and becomes instrumental to the Banks family.

WHAT’S NEW ON BRITBOX

“Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators” - Season 5

When mystery calls, “Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators” returns just in time with 10 new episodes Tuesday, Nov. 25, on BritBox. The beloved detective dramedy created by Paul Matthew Thompson (“Midsomer Murders”) and the late Jude Tindall (“Doctors”) is back for a fifth season of mind-puzzling cases and clever sleuthing in Strat-

ford-upon-Avon. Frank Hathaway (Mark Benton, “Anna and the Apocalypse,” 2017), a gruff ex-cop, and Lu Shakespeare (Jo Joyner, “Ackley Bridge”), a warm-hearted ex-hairdresser, reunite — reluctantly, that is — to take on a string of outlandish new cases. From a team-building retreat gone wrong, to a shocking on-site electrocution, to a murder mystery reunion that turns deadly, the pair discover plenty of trouble in every corner of their charming town. With the help of their weary assistant Sebastian (Patrick Walshe McBride, “Lake of Death,” 2019) and tech expert Spider (Darren Evans, “The Fifth Estate,” 2013), the team faces everything from influencers to would-be killers. But as a saboteur targets their agency, Frank and Lu must rely on loyalty and wit to survive one final act of Shakespearean intrigue. Paul Gibson (“Midsomer Murders”) returns to direct, with Helen Munson (“Island Medics”) executive producing.

The stolen Heart of the Forest must be recovered to save Orbona, so Eva rallies old friends and unexpected allies for one last stand. But reclaiming the Heart is only part of the challenge — she must also unite two divided worlds and confront the deeper truth of coexistence. Based on Tony DiTerlizzi’s New York Times bestselling book series “The Search for WondLa,” this adventure saga also voice stars Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as Otto, Gary Anthony Williams (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” 2016) as Rovender, Teri Hatcher (“Coraline,” 2009) as Muthr and Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”) as Cadmus Pryde.

Q: Small detail, but I noticed that both “The Rookie” and “9-1-1” follow Engine 118. Are the two shows related at all?

A: “The Rookie” and “9-1-1” don’t exist in the same universe, if that’s what you’re asking — and you wouldn’t be the first to do so. In fact, the people behind “9-1-1” have almost made a joke of it at this point.

“9-1-1” started its life on Fox, but transitioned to ABC, home of the cop dramedy “The Rookie,” for its seventh season.

At the time, people wondered what that meant for “9-1-1’s” relationship with its spinoff, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” which was remaining on Fox, and whether it made future crossover episodes impossible.

“I don’t know, maybe it even opens us up to possible other crossovers with ABC procedurals,” said “9-1-1” star Oliver Stark (“Into the Badlands”) in an interview with Variety. “Maybe we end up on ‘The Rookie.’”

That seems like an offhand, for-instance kind of comment, except that others did the same kind of speculating.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview a few months later, showrunner Tim Minear (“Firefly”) teased that “9-1-1” would be doing a crossover but refused to say with whom. “Is it ‘The Rookie’? Probably not since I just said ‘The Rookie.’”

At this point, it’s almost strange that they haven’t crossed over yet. They’re both first-responder shows, both set in LA and, as you say, both feature Fire Station 118 (which, for the re-

cord, is a real fire station number in Los Angeles County) in some capacity.

There’s also the fact that they’ve shared more than one actor over the years — though perhaps that would make a crossover harder. For example, Bridget Regan has played Monica Stevens in “The Rookie” since 2022 but also played a different character, Moira Blake, in “9-1-1” last season.

Q: What’s David Boreanaz doing now that “SEAL Team” is over?

A: Maybe — just maybe — more “SEAL Team.”

Back in 2022, it was announced that the Paramount+ streaming service had ordered a “SEAL Team” movie — one that would tell its own contained story, rather than being just an extended episode of the show. David Boreanaz (“Bones”) was listed as both a star and producer, as he was in the show.

There hasn’t been a concrete update in the three years since. However, just after the series finale aired a year ago, Deadline.com, a generally dependable source of inside-Hollywood info, offered a ray of hope, saying, “We hear it’s not dead.”

That’s not much, but it’s something. And the show has proven remarkably hard to kill already; if a movie did get made, it wouldn’t be “SEAL Team’s” second life but rather its third. It began as a broadcast show on CBS. It seemed to be on the chopping block in 2021, but instead just got moved to Paramount+, where it survived for three more successful seasons (and for a while, episodes were airing on both). At the risk of spoiling the finale’s plot, I’ll say that “SEAL Team” ended in such a way that its story could continue, if that’s the direction they want to go with the movie.

Q: Now that he’s no longer James Bond, is Daniel Craig finally going to do that “Layer Cake” sequel?

A: Someone’s going to do the “Layer Cake” follow-up, but it won’t be Daniel Craig (“Knives Out,” 2019). And it may not actually be a “sequel,” per se.

Before he debuted as James Bond in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” Daniel Craig played a different kind of stylish gunman in the 2004 crime thriller “Layer Cake.” Indeed, reports at the time said that it was his roguish performance in “Layer Cake” that got him the Bond gig.

“Layer Cake” was based on a book of the same name by author J.J. Connolly, who also wrote a sequel called “Viva La Madness.” A film version of that has been rumored since 2013, but with Jason Statham (“Crank,” 2006) in the role Craig vacated, a character mysteriously just named X in both the books and the film.

Just a few weeks ago, Variety magazine reported that production would finally kick off in January. However, Variety also specified that, even though it is an adaptation of “Viva La Madness,” it’s no longer being called a “Layer Cake” sequel: “The film is being billed as a stand-alone, original feature and not a sequel, spinoff or continuation of any previous adaptation of Connolly’s work.”

Perhaps that’s because they didn’t want to have to explain the actor switch.

While this goes ahead, Craig remains incredibly busy with his own high-profile projects. His new film, “Wake Up Dead Man,” the third installment in the “Knives Out” mysteries, will be released in just a few weeks.

Meanwhile, he’s currently filming “Narnia,” a new adaptation of the beloved children’s book “The Magician’s Nephew” by C.S. Lewis. It’s being promised as a “rock and roll” reimagining of the source material and is slated for release next November.
