Local reps have high hopes for Rauner’s first address By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com Republican Bruce Rauner will take the oath of office Monday and become the state’s 42nd governor, ending 12 years of Democratic control of the executive branch. In many ways, the inaugural address of the candidate who promised to “shake
up Springfield” and who carried a sledgehammer and promised results in his early campaign ads will be a warm-up for the speeches that really matter. Rauner on Feb. 4 will give his first State of the State Address in which he will lay out the state’s dire fiscal predicament – a

Rauner’s inauguration festivities begin By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – From a museum visit to a swanky $1,000-a-plate dinner at the Illinois Capitol on Sunday, Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner spent his last day before assuming the governorship celebrating and thanking supporters. The Winnetka businessman will take the oath of office as Illinois’ 42nd governor Monday, the first Republican to hold that position since George Ryan left in 2003. Rauner
told attendees at Sunday’s dinner – including numerous elected officials, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Samuel Skinner and Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago – that it was time to enjoy the festivities because there was a lot of work ahead. “We are on the verge of a major transformation of our state,” he said in his brief remarks. “This is our home. We deserve so much better than we’ve had for the last decade.”

Community celebrates Harvard woman’s life By CYNTHIA WOLF editorial@shawmedia.com HARVARD – In some, she kayaked. In others, she swam with dolphins or laughed in a crowd while wearing a Blackhawks jersey. In a few, she gazed intently at the camera lens, oxygen tubes up her nose. In all, she was beautiful, Iede Rossmiller and Erica Sabinay said of their friend, Andi Lynn Swenson. Rossmiller and Sabinay, both 21, paused

in front of one of several poster boards filled with photos of Swenson, a young blue-eyed blonde woman with a dazzling smile who captured the hearts of thousands of people in her hometown of Harvard and beyond.
The two were among hundreds of mourners who streamed through Harvard High School on Sunday for Swenson’s wake and funeral. Born with cystic fibrosis, Swenson underwent a double-lung and liver transplant in late October and died Jan. 5. She was 23. “I grew up with her. I went to school with her and played sports with her,” said Rossmiller, tears streaking her face. “She was just such an inspiration to live every day to its fullest.”
Sabinay, a Belvidere resident who met Swenson four years ago, said she counts herself lucky to have known her, and will remember Swenson for her zest for life and her sense of humor. “I’m just trying to remind myself that she’s still here with us,” Sabinay said. Friends, relatives and many who never even met Swenson but were touched by her story gathered at the high school
