Men often talk about wanting to follow in their father’s footsteps, but this practice isn’t just restricted to one gender. Kelani Schumann, 24, is following in her mother Ellen’s footsteps by signing up for with “Up with People.” “I always kind of daydreamed about being with Up with People,” Kelani said. According to UWP’s website, the multi-national organization is dedicated to giving young people the opportunity to travel internationally and build global relations through singing, dancing and community service. Originally formed in 1965, UWP has sent more than 21,000 citizens of the world out to promote its mission, and, in 1987, Ellen was one of those people. Now, in 2014, Kelani will take part in a six-month tour with UWP. Although a large component of the program is the entertainment aspect, Ellen said people don’t audition to join. Instead, she said applicants go through a personal interview, because UWP is more concerned with how well their personalities mesh with the cast and its overall goals rather than if determining whether candidates can sing “Back to Basics” — a song from the 1987 tour — on key. “Two of the cast members sit down and talk with you for about 30 minutes, and based on that interview, they decide if you are Up with People quality — and they chose Kelani, ” a beaming Ellen said. “I got lucky, and I was paired with another nerd,” Kelani joked about her interview success. This was the perfect time for Kelani to join the group. She just graduated from Iowa State University in May, and she believes UWP will not only afford
her tremendous networking opportunities, but it will do so on a much larger and global scale. “Almost six months,” Kelani said about how long she will be traveling. “We’re going to the East Coast in the U.S. We’re going to Mexico, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and we have a surprise country that we may be going to. But we haven’t made it absolutely solid yet.” While traveling, the group will stay at various host families homes between performances. Ellen, whose tour was for one full year, said when she stayed with the families, she asked them to give her family recipes and write her a message to remember them by. She said she still has a scrapbook with all of their names in it. The Schumanns said the way it works when UWP travels is that the crew is divided in half. One half of the crew erects the venue for the show — they travel with an estimated 18 tons of equipment — and the other goes into the community and does charity work. Like her mother before her, Kelani is excited for the journey she is embarking on, which begins today. She said she’s already established connections with several of her castmates on Facebook, and she even discovered one of them is a second-generation UWP member like herself. Even more unlikely is the fact that the other person’s parent served with her mother’s cast 27 years ago. International acts of good deeds seem to be part of the family business for the Schumanns — the family recently hosted a high school student from Afghanistan. Ellen is proud Kelani is picking up the family trade and that she is taking the time out to discover new things. “I’m all for it. Our family loves to travel, and our family motto is: ‘Go and find out.’ What better way to find out about the world than travel in it and explore?” Ellen said.
