Representatives of the City of Newton, Venture Homes of West Des Moines and the Newton Housing Development Corporation broke ground on two home sites in Fountain Hills Estates subdivision early Thursday afternoon, marking the first new home starts in the long-stalled development in the central Iowa city. Venture Homes will begin construction immediately on a ranch style home as well as a two-story plan. Both new homes will feature three-car garages, full basements and granite countertops in kitchens and bathrooms, as well as many other upgraded amenities. All lots in Fountain Hills will be offered free to homebuyers as a purchase bonus in lieu of the $10,000 cash incentive for other new residential construction in Newton. The Fountain Hills lots are wooded, generally a half acre in size, and are located one minute from access to Interstate 80. Fountain Hills was originally platted in 1996 and developed for 20 new home lots in 2001, but for a variety of reasons, the development stalled. All the properties eventually went through the tax sale process and were acquired through that method
“The city council’s emphasis on increasing housing development in Newton was the driving force behind our decision to seek a homebuilder to begin construction of quality new homes in Fountain Hills.” — Newton Mayor Mike Hansen
by the City of Newton in 2013. The city then sought a qualified homebuilder to jump start construction in Fountain Hills. “The city council’s emphasis on increasing housing development in Newton was the driving force behind our decision to seek a homebuilder to begin construction of quality new homes in Fountain Hills,” Newton Mayor Mike Hansen said. “We issued a ‘request for proposal’ to central Iowa homebuilders, and received several attractive proposals. Venture Homes had the most viable plan for building out the subdivision, and we applaud their willingness to step up and build new homes right away.” Stephen R. Grubb, president of Venture Homes, has been building spec and custom homes in the Greater Des Moines area as well as a num-
ber of other Iowa locations for close to 50 years. Fountain Hills Estates will be Venture’s first subdivision construction project in Newton, but according to Meredith Conway, construction coordinator of Venture Homes, the homebuilder is confident that the project will be highly successful. “Newton is ready for new home construction in all price ranges,” Conway said. “In fact, according to our real estate agents, Doyle & DeVoe/Iowa Realty in Newton, homes are selling very quickly in the city and there is a huge unmet demand for new construction. We believe that Fountain Hills offers many distinct advantages to homebuyers, including being just a minute or so from the I-80 onramp, and we’re confident that our quality-built homes will sell very quickly here.”
The Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for sponsors, volunteers and parade entries for Newton’s annual Fourth of July parade and festivities. This year’s theme is “A Hometown Fourth of July.” Float or parade entries may be planned around any Fourth of July memory, from family picnics and ice cream socials, to a pie eating contest or a church carnival. “This year reflects the simple, pure memories of friends, family and neighbors gathering to celebrate our great country together,” according to the Chamber’s website. The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 4. All parade entries must be registered by Monday. A $10 parade entry donation fee is encouraged to help with the costs of hosting the parade. For more information, call (641) 792-5545. Helen Grosvenor has been selected as the parade grand marshal. Watch the Daily News next week for a feature story on her.
