The county is looking to ensure that its finances are completely in order before the end of the 2013-2014 fiscal year on June 30. Tuesday, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on amending the FY14 budget. If approved, the final version of the FY14 budget would show the county with $28,886,386 in total revenue and $31,388,934 in total expenditures. An appropriation resolution, an item that is up for vote after the hearing, would move close to $1.4 million in funds to various accounts to align with the modified FY14 budget. During the May 27 meeting, members of the Jasper County Commission of Veterans Affairs asked the board to consider a resolution to make Jasper County Veterans Affairs Director Chris Chartier eligible for advancement within the county. “He was hired in 2012, and when he was hired, he was put directly into the same position as his predecessor was, which has left him at the top of a step system,” JCCVA spokesman John Bill-

ingsley explained at that meeting. The board asked the commission to work with Jasper County Human Resources Director Dennis Simon on placing Chartier’s position back into the county’s department head pay plan system. On Tuesday, a resolution will be presented that would move Chartier into Range 14, Step 2 of the county’s department head pay plan. If approved, Chartier would make $47,004 in FY15. Billingsley and fellow JCCVA board member Randy Wagner, spoke very highly of Chartier’s work to the board in May, and said making him eligible for advancement could help keep Chartier from being recruited by other veterans organizations. Weekend Pit Stop, the newly formed nonprofit organization which previously created the Thunder Nites in Newton bike show, will have its executive director Libbie Marshall request use of the courthouse lawn for its newest endeavor “Cruisin’ to Newton.” SUPERVISORS See Page 5A

Skiff gives update on ‘Speedway Days’ status By Stephanie Alexander Special to the Daily News Due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, the “Speedway Days” event previously announced for July 31 will not be held this year. The corresponding races at the Iowa Speedway will proceed as scheduled on Aug. 1 and 2. “We continue to be enthusiastic about this as a possible event in the future,” said Craig Light, interim director of the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce. “The goal of a signature regional event in Newton which connects the ‘Get to Know Newton’ campaign with the speedway, Skiff Medical Center and our downtown community will stay firmly on our radar as we plan for the future.” For updates on exciting events around town, visit www.gettoknownewton.com.
