Meredith Anderson grew up on a farm north of town where she learned to run on gravel, and now, her love for running has taken her all the way to the streets of Boston. Meredith, the daughter of Chris and Jody Anderson, graduated from Newton Senior High School in 2010 and is currently a senior at Iowa State University studying kinesiology and health with an emphasis on exercise science. In high school, Meredith was a strong athlete who participated in volleyball, soccer and track. A March incident in Madison County has made it so that every courthouse in the 5th Judicial District — including the Jasper County Courthouse — has to step up its security protocols. O n M a r c h 24, Cory Daugherty pulled out a handgun from his pocket at the Madison CounSheriff Halferty ty Courthouse after he was sentenced to 10 years for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. Daugherty then escaped from the courthouse and was apprehended a short while later. Tuesday, Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty referenced this incident and explained to the Jasper County Board of Supervisors that his office needs more deputies to effectively protect the courthouse and that the added security directive came from Judge Arthur Gamble, the chief justice of the 5th district of Iowa. Besides the recent developments with courtroom security in the 5th district, Halferty has been hinting that his office needed more deputies in past meetings. “As I prefaced earlier this year, I sent a staffing request to the board for consideration to add certified deputy positions ... I felt I had I had some good numbers to show that we were well below not only the national average, but the state average,” Halferty said. Halferty said they were still trying to figure out ways to pay for these new positions, but the new mandate from Gamble means that the county has to try and expedite the process a bit. “Under the Code of Iowa, the sheriff ’s office is responsible for security at the courthouse,” Halferty said. “Currently, we respond as needed, at the request of any office, usually its the court — which are state employees — and we will be at other meetings if needed on an as needed basis.” Halferty gave the board some examples of what other courthouses in the district have done to up there security protocols. Some have implemented using x-ray machines, having only one entrance and other more drastic measures. The sheriff felt that having three additional deputies would be of better use to the county in general, allow him to better utilize his office’s investigator — who has handled a good portion of the courthouse security recently — and it would prevent them from locking down the courthouse, which would make it a less welcoming environment for citizens. “I’m not sure any of us in here want that,” Halferty said of the lockdown measures. “This is Jasper County, Iowa. We want this to be a friendly building. But on the other hand, what if we have a Madison County Courthouse issue — which could happen any day? So this is the battle we’ve been fighting.
