While Sam Hornish Jr. may have taken the checkered flag at Sunday’s “Get To Know Newton” 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway, it looks like the City of Newton was also a winner. In February, Newton embarked on a new marketing campaign to encourage longtime residents, visitors and potential residents to discover more about the community and the amenities it provides. Since then, the GTKN logo has become a bigger presence in the community and was even officially adopted as the city’s new logo. Sunday’s race was an opportunity for Newton to market itself to the millions of viewers who watched the race on ESPN or heard it on the radio. At the Speedway itself, ticket holders — who come from all over Iowa and more than half of the 50 states — got to learn a bit about the town on “Get To Know
Newton Street.” “I think we’ve had a great opportunity to get people to ‘Get To Know Newton,’” Newton Management Analyst Natalie Umstead said of the booths. “I heard some families were really excited that we had activities and things for kids to do. I’ve also heard a lot
of people learning about some things they didn’t know we had in Newton such as the Hunter Mansion and the Valle Drivein, and that our downtown is being renovated through the Main Street (Iowa) program.” RACE See Page 5A
