On Saturday, many loyal Cardinals will be participating in the fundraising event where supporters of the stadium can donate by filling up a gas tank or getting a car washed Hy-Vee Gas in Newton. After months of meetings and discussions, the Newton Community School District is one step closer to having a final draft of its comprehensive technology plan. Monday, NCSD Technology Supervisor Chris Bieghler presented the school board with a 12page first draft of the plan that includes a mission statement, district goals for tech usage, how tech fits into the Common Core curriculum, how to put in tech purchase re-

quests and future school needs amongst other items. “This is probably the result of three or four district tech committee meetings … numerous conversations with building principals, and the district level contacts (who are) going back (and forth) to the buildings and talking with their fellow teachers, and staff members, on what they wanted to voice from their building,” Bieghler said. In the current draft of the tech plan, each building has its tech requests for the current 2013-14 fiscal

year and up to FY17, with the exception of Newton Senior High School — which implemented its new 1:1 iPad initiative this school year — and Berg Middle School, which is trying to decide which direction it would like to go as far as technology. Berg Elementary School has indicated that it will need an additional 79 iPads and two iPad charge carts during the next three fiscal years for a total projected cost of $41,421. SCHOOL See Page 7A

Skiff Medical Center now has more than $46,000 to go toward vital surgical equipment, thanks to the significant success of the second annual Skiff Gala fundraiser held last month at DMACC. Funds were brought in through business sponsorships, ticket sales, a live auction and a dessert auction. The event was a joint effort between the Skiff Foundation and the Skiff Auxiliary. About 250 people from the hospital and community were in attendance to enjoy socialization, a sitdown catered dinner and professional entertainment from Guys in Ties, an improvisational comedy group. Leisa Zylstra, Events and Foundation Manager, helped oversee the event along with Skiff Gala committee members Bruce Hoffmeier, Jeff King, Patty Dykstra, Pam Comer, Ashley Foster, Terri Hayden, Amanda Price and Connie Annis.
